The noxious, sour-smelling gas is usually burned off by a continuous flame on the rig, which had inexplicably gone out, like a pilot light in the wind

POPSA Whale of a Story What a mess.... I bet it stunk to high heaven. We had a whale that beached just 7-8 mile down the beach from where I am. They did a partial autopsy on the spot and took what the wanted then they buried the rest in the dunes.

POPSWildlife in the DMZ: Vanishing rainforest of the Congo basin 1, The demilitarised zone (DMZ) separating South and North Korea is home to over 1,000 plant species and rare animals. The DMZ Forum is a lobby group promoting the idea of turning the area into a nature reserve. 2. The forest is the world's biggest after the Amazon. Now Britain and Norway have created a £108m fund to help protect it from logging and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Congo basin forest is home to around 50 million people in six countries including Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Congo-Brazzaville. The Congo basin forest is twice the size of France and exceeded in size only by the Amazon. It is estimated that logging - much of it illegal - destroys an area the size of 25,000 football pitches every week. The UN estimates that at present rates two-thirds of the forest will have vanished by the year 2040.

POPSSevere Thunderstorm in Miami, Florida May 2007 On May 6, 2007 an intense thunderstorm with severe electircal activity leading to several lightning strikes hit Miami, Florida about 9pm ET. This is the footage taken of that storm. Notice the loud sounds of the wind and the rain hitting objects, and the extremely frequent flashes of lightning. The lightning messes up the camera a few times. You can also see the Bank of America tower being struck by lightning, as well as many other tall buildings and construction cranes.

The flats had been built using contributions from a local work unit, a group of workers organised by the Communist Party at a factory or office. Residents searching for survivors said it was because corrupt officials had demanded so much in kickbacks that the building fell. The neighbouring buildings had not collapsed, including one which housed cadres from the Communist Party. "Show me the structural steel in that building," said one woman, whose mother is missing in the rubble. "It all went into some official's pocket," she spat. The foreign media have a poor image in China This makes reporting the disaster difficult; before the anti-Chinese riots in Tibet, and the sympathetic view of Tibetans in the Western media, foreign journalists were popular. Now we are seen as a threat.

POPSAwakening Statue Moved This is really sad. I grew up in the DC area my entire life, and this is one of the things that is stapled in my memories. It's definitely going to be missed.
