Ten Years of 'Change' in the UK
merrie
by merrie  11-11-2008    2
Tony, confines himself to doing only a modest amount of harm. I ended up being almost grateful to Tony Blair. Given that he was leader of the Mother of All Champagne Socialist Parties he actually behaved with more wisdom than might have been predicted. And I even came to quite like the guy. he thing I still do not go along with though is why all the vitriol towards George Bush? Sure, back in 2000, I too was seduced like all the rest of the European public by a relentless media derision-fest at his expense. Once I had managed to step aside from all this however and to make up my own mind about him , the mythical, ignorant cowboy moron turned out, to my eyes at least, to be quite a decent, genuine and plain-speaking guy. I would have him any day in preference to the average mealy-mouthed, craven British politician. The kind whose words weave an elaborate linguistic dance choreographed to say absolutely nothing at all, so running scared are they of our great, overpaid TV star politic

Plantation Politics
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-24-2008
Cont..Ultimately, the theme continues for liberals: "self-hating" minorities who deviate from liberal orthodoxy are attacked because liberals view them as turn-coats. For more recent examples, see the treatment Miguel Estrada and Janice Rogers Brown received when the president nominated them to the D.C. Circuit, while the white guy, John Rodgers, sailed through to confirmation. And, recall Justice Thomas' words: "And from my standpoint, as a black American, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. " The "old order" is liberalism. Mr. Obama's cheap shot against Justice Thomas, which would be applauded in Cambridge and Hyde Park, is the most recent example of the stereotypical left-wing effort to keep minorities on the plantation.

New rights for terror detainees as deeply split Supreme Court rules
papananook
by papananook  6-19-2008
It isn't hard to figure out why the right wingers are all in an uproar over this--you see it gives rights to human beings that aren't Amerikans and that's unthinkable because if we actually see our "enemies" (anyone not Amerikan or kissing our leader's butt) as HUMAN BEINGS and not just some vile brown monkeys like we're supposed to. How sad is that? What has Amerika become? Are we so vile as to deny basic rights to everyone not born here? And when theyu are given the barest of rights--not freedom, juist a chance at Justice--The bile that comes from the Right wing, from Scalia to Giuliani to Limbaugh is so odious, I may gag.

Initially, I was for Hillary. Early on I switched my support to Obama. And the main reason I did so was the crass self interest that she has shown in this campaign. Having said that I'll concede that either of the Democratic candidates would be far and above McClain as president.

"Parsley claims that Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" predicated on "deception." The Muslim prophet Muhammad, he writes, "received revelations from demons and not from the true God. And he emphasizes this point: "Allah was a demon spirit." Parsley does not differentiate between violent Islamic extremists and other followers of the religion" Parsley, who refers to himself as a "Christocrat," is no stranger to controversy. In 2007, the grassroots organization he founded, the Center for Moral Clarity, called for prosecuting people who commit adultery. In January, he compared Planned Parenthood to Nazis. In the past Parsley's church has been accused of engaging in pro-Republican partisan activities in violation of its tax-exempt status."

What His Breakup Lines Really Mean
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  3-6-2008    3
Most guys - though they can come off as more desperate than a brewhound in a dry county - take their time testing the relationship waters. If a woman comes on too fast - with talk of futures, or of how she's never felt this way before - then the man often will be likely to retreat. Fast. It's not that he's not ready for a relationship; it's just that he's not ready to decide whether "Mony Mony" should be in the second or third set of the reception playlist. "Can I call you sometime?" Translation: "If you're ever lonely at 3 a.m. on a Saturday night...." Well, he may or may not be that crass, but he is trying to keep the door cracked. If he's the one who's doing the ditching, then he's (unfairly, mind you) trying to lead you to believe that a break will strengthen the possibilities of some kind of rekindled romance in the future. If he's the victim, then he's trying to hang onto any slim chance he may have in the future with you (or possibly one of your friends). Either way, chec

Trade Unions: Don't follow anti-Worker USA
righthand
by righthand  2-26-2008    3
"Compared to the thriving £2.3bn-a-year anti-union industry in the United States, where up to 80% of corporations faced with a union organising campaign turn to a union-busting consultancy or specialist law firm, the business is still fairly low-key in Britain. Only a handful of companies are known to have thus far availed themselves of the services of the major US firms, which bear names such as the Burke Group, Labour Relations Institute and PTI Labour Research and have shown a mounting interest in the UK market ever since the Blair government's Employment Relations Act came into effect in June 2000, guaranteeing union recognition wherever a majority of employees are in favour. "The US firms got very excited about this," says John Logan of the London School of Economics, who recently completed a report on the issue for the TUC. "Their marketing line is basically: we've got 60 years of experience in union avoidance under laws like these, and we can help you. To my knowledge, at lea

Tourists stay away. US Arrogant, Crass, Rude, Greed

"We treat foreigners as criminals until proved otherwise. We're no more helpful once a visitor arrives. There's an international symbol -- an outline of an airplane -- used on direction signs all over Europe, Asia and in Mexico. Not here. "Costs too much to add signs for all them furaners." That's what a highway official once told me when I asked about fixing this. " "Why are people turned away? Scruffiness, unsuitability, past contributions to Greenpeace or general ickiness. Read the State Department guidelines -- visitors must satisfy consular officers that they deserve to enter. But consular officials do not have to explain reasons for rejection, and they don't."

Such an analysis would be very useful and ethical of the individuals names were stripped from the data. Marketers and pollsters would still get a unique picture of what people are interested in.

Olbermann, Once Again Hits The Nail on the Head
zasel
by zasel  9-5-2007    1
It amazes me that Keith Olbermann is the only cable news journalist to have made a serious issue over Bush's comments concerning how he is playing the Iraq war for political purposes. I hope you will either watch or read Keith's entire comment as it makes plain just how crass and soulless Bush actually is. Once again, his words reinforces my belief that Bush is a sociopath. What bothers me tremendously is that no other news person dealt with Bush's comments. Chris Matthews, on his Hardball program went on endlessly about Bush's comments as it concerns his plans for making a lot of money on speaking engagements after leaving the white house. Chris felt it was a very inappropriate subject to be discussing (money) while still commander in chief of our soldiers who are being killed and wounded in battle. As inappropriate as those remarks very well may be, they don't come close to the crassness if Bush's admission to playing politics with the Iraq war.

Ari Fleischer and his crew are dripping with panic

Fleischer and his group Freedom's Watch are not only using the overworked and phony connection between the Iraq war and the 9/11 attacks, but they are aiming at their own Republicans who are fleeing the president's Iraq strategy. They are so panicked that Bush is going to be forced into a corner in September, that they are actually trying to intimidate members of their own party with the same bullshit rhetoric and advertising they used to manipulate and scare voters in the past two elections. Ari and his group should be totally ashamed to exploit our wounded and killed vets in such a crass political game.

The Bushies Pre-emptively attack Michael Moore
zasel
by zasel  5-13-2007    16
Once again the Bushies have decided to preemptively attack Michael Moore over his new documentary, SICKO. This is a film about the lack of adequate health care in the richest country in the world; the United States of America. Understand, that there are certain things Michael Moore does and says that do not meet with my applause, but when he is right he is right. The U.S. should be embarrassed by its lack of health care for every citizen of the country, no matter what their financial situation. Health care is not a privilege, it is a right. This is especially true in a country as vastly wealthy as the U.S. It is criminal for tens of millions of people to be out of the loop for proper medical care. The Bushies and the conservative Republicans will say or do anything to scare the citizenry away from national health care. But just ask the people of Canada what they think of their system, even with the problems it faces. It is not perfect. But no one is left uncared for.
