GOP Sen.: Electoral Rout McCain's Fault
Wisco
by Wisco  11-16-2008    1
Am I the only one who sees that freedom and "religious-based values" are often contradictory? After all, the Taliban has "religious-based values." DeMint in his own words: McCain, who is proponent of campaign finance reform that weakened party organizations and basically put George Soros in the driver's seat. His proposal for amnesty for illegals. His support of global warming, cap-and-trade programs that will put another burden on our economy. And of course, his embrace of the bailout right before the election was probably the nail in our coffin this last election. And he has been an opponent of drilling in ANWR, at a time when energy is so important. It really didn't fit the label, but he was our package. I totally called this . DeMint -- and a lot of GOPers -- believe they lost because they weren't crazy enough. Good news for Democrats in future elections.

When asked if he had a message for Canadians, Ahmadi called on Canada not to "kill their sons" by sending troops to fight in Afghanistan. "I tell them to let Afghans to make their future by themselves and decide by themselves," he said. "Afghanistan does not belong to America or Canada." Prime Minister Stephen Harper has pledged to pull all Canadian combat forces out of Afghanistan by 2011.

CBS: "West Virginia Most Neurotic State in Union"
blueridge
by blueridge  9-23-2008    7
A CBS News report (correction: not Couric) stated this at the conclusion of a piece tonight (Sept. 23) based upon this study here which considers that people have a personality within their states, or flock together with those of similar. While the headline of the story underscores New York as neurotic, West Virginia scored highest. Note the study describes a "stress belt": The results revealed clear patterns of personalities - neuroticism is highest in the east along a line stretching from Maine to Louisiana - the "stress belt". There is evidence of this in the crazy way people drive in West Virginia and the high auto insurance rates even though it is a small population center. (Ohio insurance rates are much cheaper for example). West Virginia has been a place of conflict since it was formed, splitting Virginia in two. The "mountain state" has been a tumultuous region, "wild and wonderful", and still untamed. See how other states score.

Emery is internet folklorist David Emery. Don't you just love the irony here? Sooner or later, someone's going to get everything all screwed up and people will start believing that Palin's a secret Muslim and Obama pretended to give birth to Bristol Palin's baby. Just stick to the stuff in the newspapers, people. Everything else is probably crap. There are enough real problems with Sarah Palin; there's no reason to make stuff up.

RNC takes an insurance policy against cases of police brutality
ratilfar
by ratilfar  9-8-2008
Sane persons have looked at Fletcher's actions and wondered why he was being so crazy. It could be that he figured that the $10 million policy taken out by the RNC to cover the costs of police-brutality settlements – the first time such a policy has ever been taken out for an American political convention – would suffice to protect his butt. (One wonders if any insurance company will ever again be so foolish as to approve the sale of such a policy, particularly to the Republican National Committee.)

Rob Kall's Op Ed News--Damn good info
papananook
by papananook  9-7-2008
See site for this and other good progressive stuff: By Rob Kall McCain's Offshore Drilling Approach Is Bad For America; We Need A Better, Smarter Approach Offshore drilling is a ruse to get votes-- a ruse that sells out America by leading us down the wrong path. The old saying says that only a crazy person keeps digging to get out of a hole. Well, continuing to drill for oil, as the primary solution to our energy problem is that kind of crazy. Excessive, unnecessary energy use, as we have become accustomed to, is a dangerous threat to our national security.

If we are not willing to die for the truth, the truth will surely die with us. Jesus said, "unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone." When He was captured and taken before Pilate he said, "For this purpose I was born, to bear witness to the truth..." He loved the truth more than Himself. Socrates was the same way. John, one of Jesus' disciples, went on to write about how he was in darkness until Jesus came. He was trained by Jesus and followed in his footsteps. As a result the teachings of Jesus remain to this day. The forces of evil and its darkness did not prevail. Jesus' strategy works. By God's grace I hope to follow. "Buy truth, and do not sell it, get wisdom and instruction and understanding." ~ Solomon Prov 23:23

Angry Clinton Supporters Toast McCain, Roast Obama
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2008    5
"I'm a registered Republican ... for the first time in my voting life," Archuleta said. "No Obama for me. I'm voting for John McCain." "He reminds me of what the Jimmy Carter era was like. ... If they think Jimmy Carter had it bad, just wait if Obama gets into the White House. That will be bad news in so many ways," she added. McCain campaign regional communications director Tom Kise said, "Four years ago, if you said we'd be at a Hillary happy hour at the DNC, I would have called you crazy. But today is a great opportunity for people who ... agree that Sen. Barack Obama doesn't have the experience to be president of the United States." "The DNC really pushed on us. Now they've left us with two choices: somebody who has no substance or a Republican." Clinton supporters-turned-McCain converts at the event were not just angry at Obama's campaign; they're furious with the Democratic Party's nomination process this year.

Background on Georgia President Saakashvili

The Bush administration, with its broad assurances of support for Georgia, has come in for strong criticism in Georgia for having emboldened Mr. Saakashvili to challenge Russia. But Mr. Saakashvili has resisted the notion that he was somehow taken in. Asked in a recent interview on CNN if he believed Georgia could win against Russia militarily, Mr. Saakashvili said, “I am not crazy.”

How to Remove Unwanted Formatting From Text
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2008
It removes HTML and Word formatting, removes email reply ">" and "|" characters and will optionally remove line feeds so that broken lines are restored into proper paragraphs. At the touch of a button the stripped text is restored to the clipboard, ready for pasting into your document. It works like a charm. I use it daily and it's one of the most useful utilities on my PC. The only downside of StripMail is that you have to run the program each time you want to clean some text. I overcome this by assigning a hotkey to run StripMail to automatically strip the clipboard contents ready for pasting. Removing formatting is then as simple as copying the text, hitting the hotkey and pasting. You can create the hotkey (as I did) by using the freeware program AutoHotkey but you can also do it in Windows by using a shortcut that's linked to a hotkey. Here's how:

Mr. Murdoch Goes To War
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2008
This would be music to the ears of any newsroom, so hope mingled with the professional dread in Murdoch’s audience that afternoon. He may be awful, but he is rich and awful, smart and awful, powerful and awful, and while he may well be crazy to still believe in the future of print, he is determined and crazy. Murdoch might be the last person The Journal would have chosen as its savior, but newspapers may well be down to last hopes. What does he see that others do not? What is his vision for one of America’s most venerated dailies? Can he really grow The Journal in such a hostile economic climate? And if he succeeds, might The Wall Street Journal as we know it, and as millions of readers have loved it, cease to exist?

Obama's Idol Status Overseas
merrie
by merrie  7-24-2008    2
Many in Washington were scratching their heads while he (McCain) was traipsing through the jungles of Colombia last month. But then came the freeing of hostages held by the FARC Colombian rebels, and McCain looked, well, presidential. And really, that’s the whole point of these “fact-finding” missions – looking good for the cameras. Perhaps these work vacations by politicians are more sophisticated than they first appear. Maybe Americans appreciate the fact that their presidential candidates are traveling beyond the confines of America and seeing the world firsthand. Perhaps, but do not be deceived. These are trips staged to the finest detail, with little left to chance and happenstance. Obama and McCain know this, and they have treated it as such – an extension of their political campaigns. Why do you think the network anchors are along for the ride? It is surely not because of the news quotient that the “surge” is working.

This gives you an idea of how stupid these people are. In my piece Played Out , I argued that this sort of action would wind up with the law being struck down and, perhaps, even the amendment being reconsidered. Send someone to prison for this and people will see just how unjust the whole thing is. The problem with the religious right is that they have themselves convinced that people don't think they're crazy. As a result, they say crazy-assed stuff like this all the time.

Why The Silence on This Dictator?
Elisabeth Eaves
by Elisabeth Eaves  6-27-2008
Peter Maass writes on why we rarely hear U.S. criticism of Teodoro Obiang, the draconian ruler of Equatorial Guinea -- when we hear so much about Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe. Maass posits that it's because of U.S. oil investments in the West African nation. There's no doubt some truth to that notion. But it could also have to do with the strange ebbs and flows of the media. Britain's BBC has gone to extraordinary lengths to cover Zimbabwe, in part because it was a former British colony, which Equatorial Guinea was not. But more importantly, perhaps, is the fact that just about every news organization in the world that covers Africa on the ground has a correspondent in South Africa. Call it the Jerusalem effect: Sure, it's newsworthy. But there are more foreign correspondents per capita in Jerusalem than anywhere else in the world. So closer things get covered more, farther things not so much. And Equatorial Guinea is a long, long way away from the foreign press.

VA: PTSD and TBI "Overblown"; Like "Football" Injuries
cptenaud
by cptenaud  6-2-2008    1
VA secretary Peake suggested some of the concern about post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury has been overblown. Many of the brain injuries are serious but some of them are akin to what anyone who played football in their youth might have suffered, Peake told Guinn. Guinn wasn't entirely satisfied with the answers. He said it's a real issue for returning soldiers as well as their families, and he doesn't think job training is enough. Frankly, Peake's casually dismissive attitude sucks. Being hunted by other humans every day for 15 months, watching your friend bleed to death, and having your brain flattened like a pancake from a thousand-pound detonation are not comparable to football injuries.
