If Entire Countries Go Broke, We'll Go With Them
brightlight4
by brightlight4  10-25-2008
The root of today's credit crisis is not that the world lacks money; the world is awash in cash, with $6 trillion sitting idly in global money markets alone. But if countries start to fail, the remainder of the world's investment capital could be spooked out of productive investments as well. Nor do we have the tools to avert disaster. The International Monetary Fund's resources are a pittance compared to the financial exposure of the countries in most danger. And as a result of the industrialized world's government bailouts and bank guarantees, there won't be any more capital for emerging markets that are still flailing. Take, for example, a country as large and powerful as Germany: Deutsche Bank's assets represent 80 percent of the nation's GDP. In Switzerland, the assets of the bank UBS represent 450 percent of the country's GDP. The financial exposure of the British banks is similarly alarming: Barclays PLC's assets amount to more than 100 percent of the United Kingdom's GDP,

Dangers of natural gas from shale using high pressure H2O
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-23-2008    3
Traditional gas wells bore straight into porous stone, using a few thousand gallons of water. But dense shale has gas locked inside Hydraulic fracturing “fracking,” and horizontal drilling unlock it. Each hydraulically fractured horizontal well requires 2 to 7 million gallons of fresh water mixed with sand and thousands of gallons of industrial chemicals to make the water penetrate easily. The frac-water mixture is blasted at high pressure into shale up to 10,000 feet deep, fracturing them. The sand lodges in the cracks, propping them open and providing a path for the gas to exit after external pressure is released. Besides using vast amounts of groundwater, scientists worry that toxic frac water – 30 percent or more – remains underground and may years later pollute freshwater aquifers. Millions of gallons of frac water come back to the surface. It could be treated, but in Texas it is most often reinjected into the ground.

Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-16-2008    5
As part of Critical Visions 08, a conference organized by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in Sydney, Andrew Maynard and six other young up-and-coming architects presented a vision of what the future holds for architects and designers, and the challenges that we will have to face. The visions proposed everything from clearing large swaths of Sydney for creating green spaces, to radically conceptualizing what a city would look like if it only had public transportation, and all points were no more than 30 minutes away from each other.

Watch UC Berkeley Lectures (entire courses) Online, Free, Now.
lordthor541
by lordthor541  3-17-2008
from anthropology to electrical engineering to geography to history to english to math to physics - Just about every class Berkeley offers. There's a drop down list at the top right, select a semester to see what classes are available. Each one has new classes. Personally I recommend Professor Muller's "Descriptive Introduction to Physics". He's a brilliant physicist and a great teacher. After that I'd recommend the "Modern Physics" class. You watch all the lectures as if you were sitting inside the classroom. The best part is, it's all legal! AND if you wanted a degree, you could watch all the lectures, study the coursenotes (also available online for free) - and then challenge the course once you know the material. pass the test and basically get a free degree. haha

Cybercrime vs Cyberterrorism
barrett778
by barrett778  11-28-2007
Sometimes, it is all about using the right words. Prioritization seems to be the problem in the US Government. National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace is still falling short according to GAO audits. DHS has not figured out how to get in front of this issue, as the executive agent. PITAC recommendation to President should be strongly considered to ensure the funds committed are spent wisely.

Chief's Outburst: Madeleine Is Dead
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-23-2007    2
"They created a monster of information which they lost control of." Officers recently claimed the public was sick of having the hunt "rammed down their throats". Can you have too much information? Yes, I think so. Who of us hasn't had "information overload" at some point in time, but given the choice, I would rather have too much information, than too little. (There is a big difference between information and infotainment too.) If only the media would apply the same journalistic *zeal and drive for the truth* to other issues such as wars, poverty and stuff like that as well. Would that be too much to ask? God Bless little Madeleine and I hope she is found alive.
