Controllers Cheer as Data Arrive From NASA's Spirit Rover
merrie
by merrie  11-14-2008
Now we are analyzing the data we've received to determine what the next commands should be, but this is all good news." Spirit has been operating on Mars for nearly five years in an exploration mission originally planned to last three months. The recent dust storm is clearing, but a coating of dust on Spirit's solar panels is reducing the rover's ability to generate electricity even when the sky is clear. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover project for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

What happens when you cry?
einbar
by einbar  11-12-2008    2
" one study collected both reflex tears and emotional tears (after peeling an onion and watching a sad movie, respectively). When scientists analyzed the content of the tears, they found each type was very different. Reflex tears are generally found to be about 98 percent water, whereas several chemicals are commonly present in emotional tears First is a protein called prolactin, which is also known to control breast milk production. Adrenocorticotropic hormones are also common and indicate high stress levels. The other chemical found in emotional tears is leucine-enkephalin, an endorphin that reduces pain and works to improve mood. Of course".

Madonna's 1st 'Enthusiastic' Congratulates to Obama
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-9-2008
Found two clips for this; now thinking this is the one I saw quoted and talked about in mainstream news. It strikes me how different this all is: People were cheering and crying and dancing coast-to-coast; multi-millions celebrating throughout the world and big name celebrities going ecstatic on stage. Yes, something happened here. Not noted for her refined eloquence, Obama starts by informing the crowd: "This is a $@#ing important day!" Ah, yes...out of the mouths of babes.

Take a Bow, America
dulios
by dulios  11-8-2008    9
It can be easy in such a moment of triumph to lose sight of the agony wrought by the unrelieved evil of racism and to forget how crucial a role anti-black racism played in shaping American life since the first slaves were dumped ashore 400 years ago. Blacks have been holding fast to the promise of America for all that time. Not without anger. Not without rage. But with a fidelity that in the darkest moments — those moments when the flow of blood seemed like it would never stop, when enslaved families were wrenched apart, when entire communities were put to the torch, when the breeze put the stiffened bodies of lynched victims in motion, when even small children were murdered and Dr. King was taken from us — even in those dire moments, African-Americans held fast to the promise of America with a fidelity that defied logic.

For Striving 6th Graders, History is Now

Torin Wilson, 10-years old, had stayed up with his mother to watch the returns on television. Moments after Mr. Obama was declared the winner, he called his grandmother, who was crying. “I will tell my children of this day, and they will pass it on from generation to generation and know about the first black president,” he wrote in his essay. “And I know that he will certainly not be the last.”

Speech given on August 28, 1963. (Full version.) I saw Jesse Jackson crying and his tears made me think of this speech. I can only imagine what MLK would have said and felt, had he been alive today. Let freedom ring. .:) If you're in a rush, here's a shorter version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWTKZLKWYHE

President Barack Hussein Obama - Reality feels like a dream
zizzy
by zizzy  11-5-2008    9
I am laughing with joy and crying. I've cried so much, even during McCain's speech. Another dream fulfilled - the dream since I was eight years old. I wish my mother was alive. She ran away from the Jim Crow south shortly after her first cousin, my cousin, a man named Huey was tortured and lynched. Thanks everyone who helped make this dream come true. I love you all.

Stoning victim "begged for mercy"
zizzy
by zizzy  11-4-2008    11
The witness said people crowding round to see the execution said it was "awful". "People were saying this was not good for Sharia law, this was not good for human rights, this was not good for anything." But no-one tried to stop the Islamist officials, who were armed, the witness said. He said one boy was shot in the confusion. According to Amnesty International, nurses were sent to check during the stoning whether the victim was still alive. They removed her from the ground and declared that she was, before she was replaced so the stoning could continue.

I know this has probably been clipped already, but it needs to be clipped again and again. What a hateful, hurtful woman. Sorry to see anyone living a life that is so obviously fear based and then trying to spread that fear and hate to kids and so proud of herself that she can face the cameras and seem happy that she hurt other people.

A (good, "old-fashioned") journalist ... (4.00 / 2) is never there to examine one side of a story. American journalism has been in a sad state for many years. **Warning: slightly topical tangent alert:** Hell, we never heard more than the one ever-saintly angle on Mother Teresa for crying out loud, whereas so many in the rest of the world at least had the opportunity to examine other info. If you ask your average Indian exposed to her works, she isn't regarded as a saint. Granted, the whole point behind missionary work is conversion to the missionary's faith, but she was held out to be to be the ultimate humanitarian ... and that is simply not the truth. I know, I know -- Mother Teresa?? You can't trust anything. :) If we never had folks like Nir, we'd never see the inside of many worlds or have a single clue whether we're being propagandized by our own media and government. The one thing America needs a lot less of is ignorance.

Will Republicans Steal the 2008 election?
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-14-2008    2
This interview is with Mark Crispin Miller. If you want to see who is actually trying to steal the elections -- and tactics of Republican voter suppression going on right now, his books are good details and summaries. He wrote: Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the Election Cruel and Unusual: Bush Cheney's New World Order & The Bush Dyslexicon Republicans are the party that tries to purge voters from the rolls. The Republicans are the ones who are always crying wolf and voter fraud while they are the ones doing it, and doing massive campaigns of voter suppression. If you've heard about ACORN and charges of their alleged voter fraud (which it ain't) then you know what's going on -- and in Miller interview here & his book -- you get a good explaination of what's going on behind the scenes...a massive and decade long program of attempts at voter suppression by the Republicans. Let's not get fooled again.

The Things Their Families Carried
debbyski
by debbyski  10-11-2008    2
“Oftentimes you would see a family go up to the grave and they would just launch themselves onto the tombstone and start crying,” Mr. Alpert said. “Our instinct as reporters was ‘We have to film that.’ And we didn’t. We would stand there, and then we would go over without the cameras running, and we would talk to people. And we would explain who we were, why we were there, and ask if it would be possible for them to share with us.”
