The big bounce vs Big Bang
pokkets
by pokkets  10-4-2008    1
Edwin Hubble and Stephen Hawking, and the discovery of Cosmic background radiation amongst other contributers drafted the Big Bang Theory, but Each knew it was a theory, and destined to be qualified significantly as our our technology and depth of understanding progresses. Big bang is a Theory, not a conclusion. Ask Stephen Hawking to consider any new theories, and evidence, and he would be delighted to consider the evidence. He's a scientist, and a Mathematician, who knows how limited our theories can be with what we know. He is looking for what happened, not what may have happened,.

First Stage of Global Cooling During 2008/09
amgumen
by amgumen  8-28-2008
Mr. Dilley of Global Weather Oscillations has found seven different types of recurring gravitational cycles ranging from the very warm 460,000 year cycle down to a 230 year recurring global warming cycle. All of the gravitational cycles coincide nearly 100 percent with 2200 global warming events during the past half million years. This includes the earth’s current warming cycle which began around the year 1900, and the first stage of global cooling that will begin during 2008 and 2009.

Democrats Have '08 Advantage
Wisco

Big time. McClatchy's "Hot Off the Trail" blog reports that this year has all the hallmarks of another '06. Republicans who don't curse the names Bush and Cheney are pretty much clueless. They've destroyed their party for at least two cycles, if not much, much longer. It's a party in political rehab.

Nano-Solar Power -Will it Be the Next Revolutionary Technology?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-20-2008
Not that the technology is perfect. The system can absorb energy very well, but that's no good to anyone until they work out a way to harvest it from the sheet - when you're dealing with a hyper-complex web of millions of units oscillating at trillions of cycles per second, you can't just solder copper wires to the ends and call them plus and minus. This isn't a mistake or a weakness in the concept though; it's an issue because no-one has ever done this before. You know, the kind of thing that happens with cutting edge invention.

Light Receptors in Eye Play Key Role in Setting Biological Clock, Study Shows

Does the Milky Way Influence Earth's Biodiversity Cycles? Research Says "Yes"
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-13-2008    3
The boost in cosmic-ray exposure may have a direct effect on Earth's organisms, according to paleontologist Bruce Lieberman. The radiation would lead to higher rates of genetic mutations in organisms or interfere with their ability to repair DNA damage. In this way, the process could lead to new species while killing off others. If future studies confirm the galaxy-biodiversity link, it would force scientists to broaden their ideas about what can influence life on Earth. "Maybe it's not just the climate and the tectonic events on Earth," Lieberman said. "Maybe we have to start thinking more about the extraterrestrial environment as well."

Viruses can catch colds, says study that redefines life itself
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-10-2008    1
Prof La Scola and his colleagues were surprised to spot a smaller type of virus attached to the virus-making factory inside infected cells. The new virus - Sputnik - was unable to infect cells by itself but seemed to hijack the larger to achieve its infectious aims. By regulating the growth and death of plankton, giant viruses - and satellite viruses such as Sputnik - could be a major influence on ocean nutrient cycles and climate. "These viruses could be major players in global systems," Nature is told by Prof Curtis Suttle, an expert in marine viruses at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
