Thomas Paine Regarding The Age of Reason
sahara
by sahara  10-18-2009    6
For my own part, I believe that all are impostors who pretend to hold verbal communication with the Deity. It is the way by which the world has been imposed upon; but if you think otherwise you have the same right to your opinion that I have to mine, and must answer for it in the same manner. But all this does not settle the point, whether the Bible be the Word of God, or not. It is therefore necessary to go a step further. The case then is: - You form your opinion of God from the account given of Him in the Bible; and I form my opinion of the Bible from the wisdom and goodness of God manifested in the structure of the universe, and in all works of creation. The result in these two cases will be, that you, by taking the Bible for your standard, will have a bad opinion of God; and I, by taking God for my standard, shall have a bad opinion of the Bible.

How absolutizing the Bible relativizes Jesus Christ
masbury
by masbury  10-17-2009    29
When all the words of Scripture are elevated to the rank of being the very words of God, the unique word of God embodied in Jesus "in whom all the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form" (Col. 2:9) is reduced to just one source of divine revelation among many.

Epiphanies on the Web
vintageozarks
by vintageozarks  9-21-2009
I am experiencing epiphanies almost continuously these last few days; one such epiphany is that in this new world of virtual marketing of self, I want to absorb it and move forward with it, snatching up every ounce of networking I can latch onto and I'm doing it as fast as I can, feel obsessed with doing this; eager to watch it grow, evolve, and excited about where it will lead to down the road. Will share my Internet Safari into "who knows where" with anyone who wants to tag along. I'll be pushing the envelope everyday.

'Cahokia: Ancient America's Great City on the Mississippi'
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-5-2009
cont (more at source): And this drama was at the heart of a place we now call Cahokia, ancient America's one true city north of Mexico—as large in its day as London— and the political capital of a most unusual Indian nation. At that time all the stars and planets in the Northern Hemisphere's night sky were visible above Cahokia, situated in a broad expanse of Mississippi River bottomland just east of what is now St. Louis, Missouri. Cahokia's people looked to the Morning and Evening stars for guidance and— inspired by ideas from Mesoamerica, possibly brought back from Cahokian rulers' travels or priests' vision quests— incorporated them into a religion that would displace traditions across the American Midwest, South, and Plains.

Dirty layers hid painting's penis
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-2-2009
more: The painting however once belonged to the Spanish royal family, and Ms Moreira says she thinks this was when the post-production modesty came in. Removing layers of dirt, dust and paint specks that accumulated over more than three centuries cost 150,000 euros ($257,500).

When gay seeps out the seams
kelsoweikal
by kelsoweikal  8-12-2009
I just saw Jesus Camp for the first time this weekend. what struck me the most was the number of times the kids in the movie – kids of 8 or 9 – were shamed into crying. In between being told they were to be the new young warriors of God, they were taught, over and over, how unworthy they were. I take heart in the fact that so many religions are offering a warm welcome to those in the LGBT community, and hope that word gets out that being who you are doesn’t have to mean giving up your favorite deity. In fact, it can help you meet a friendlier, more relaxed, and more positive version.

Opinion: Do you believe in miracles?
clip-on-tie

People of all faiths or of none should enjoy protections under the law
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-22-2009    4
Religious fundamentalists who insist that this is a Christian nation are woefully ignorant of history. Why is this so? Because they wish to preserve their position of Christian privilege while denying the same rights to people of no faith in a deity.

Understanding does not diminish Awe
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-2-2009    2
"The religious experience is, at best, a stunted variety of this feeling. Awe without understanding, or at least the desire for understanding, degenerates into mysticism: viewing a mystery not as a challenge to be solved, but something to be worshipped for its own sake. Mysticism states that ignorance is a desirable condition, a state we should glory in. This attitude only keeps us frightened and ignorant, and worst of all, robs us of the deeper and more genuine awe that comes with comprehension. I say, let us explore. There may be problems too high or too deep for us, mysteries we cannot penetrate - but so far, we haven't found any, and if there are any, they will not need to be protected from our investigations."
