POPSThe Democrat’s War on Oncologists and Cardiologists cardiology and 19% on radiation oncology. They’re targets only because of cost: Two-thirds of morbidity or mortality among Medicare patients owes to cancer or heart disease. … Cancer doctors get hit because the Administration believes specialists order too many MRIs and CT scans. Certain kinds of diagnostic imaging lose 24% under new assumptions that machines are in use 90% of the time, up from 50%. There isn’t a radiologist in America running an MRI 10.8 hours out of 12, unless he’s lining up patients on a conveyor belt. But claiming scanners are used far more often than they really are lets the Administration “score” spending cuts. It’s like doling out healthcare by mimicking progressive income taxation; tax the haves into oblivion so eventually all can go without. And this change is applied to all expensive equipment, not just MRIs and CTs, so payments for antitumor radiation therapy will fall by up to 44%.

POPS PrisonCare In a June speech, President Obama justified a government takeover of the entire health care system with an observation on rising costs. He stated, "...more and more Americans are forced to worry about not just getting well, but whether they can afford to get well. Millions more wonder if they can afford the routine care necessary to stay well. Even for those who have health insurance, rising premiums are straining family budgets to the breaking point"premiums that have doubled over the last nine years..." The costs of premiums for the private health care system -- with all of its innovation and access to the latest drugs, diagnostic tests, advanced equipment and research, have only doubled in nine years. And something else for seniors to consider: the costs for their care will compete with the health care costs of the federal prison system. And, if California is any indication, the prisoners' medical needs may come before seniors. . . .

POPSA Psychiatrist on Why Bipolar Disorder May be a Source of Humour This from the brilliant Blue to Blue blog by a practising psychiatrist in response to comments yesterday over her or merriment over the Onion's item on Obama's 'mood disorder'. It is one that I find I can accept and pretty close to my own CM comments this week. Anyway, it is good that the issue has been raised, and certainly an opportunity for others to visit this (often hilarious) blog.

POPSHey, stupid! Fix health care This is a common sense article. It's practical, fair and do-able. His suggestions won't please those who want all things for all people but it's sensible. His ideas for "free clinics" and "free health care" are, again, reasonable. Even the ideas about getting doctors and hospitals to participate are reasonable and appropriate. It really isn't that complicated if Congress is willing to take some common sense approaches instead of trying to throw out our entire healthcare system for the sake of special interest groups. And his bottom line: "There definitely is no provision in there (the Constitution) for a federal takeover of health care."

POPSPsychiatry: itself bewitched by fantasies? Seems even psychiatry has been pervaded with the ideology of neuro-gobbledygook and the pernicious ideology of reducing the human whole to classificatory systems not only correlated with, but identical to, cellular biology. Brave new world.
