New And Not Improved! New York Times
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2008
the death penalty and gun control. Mr. Obama endorsed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the District of Columbia’s gun-control law. We knew he ascribed to the anti-gun-control groups’ misreading of the Constitution as implying an individual right to bear arms. But it was distressing to see him declare that the court provided a guide to “reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe.” We were equally distressed by Mr. Obama’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s barring the death penalty for crimes that do not involve murder. Mr. Obama’s shifts are striking because he was the candidate who proposed to change the face of politics. We don’t want any “redefining” on these big questions. This country needs change it can believe in.

Chimps console each other to reduce stress after fights
iskandar
by iskandar  6-17-2008
"When Fraser looked at who was consoling whom, he found that acts of consolation were more likely to happen between individuals with valuable relationships. Chimps tended to comfort peers who groomed them frequently, shared food with them or gave them a hand in their own conflicts. Other factors like how closely related they were had no such effects. "

Cartoon Hero Will Save the Day
papananook
by papananook  4-30-2008
“In the past three months, average consumer spending on energy came to $663 billion, or 6.5 percent of total consumer spending. A year ago, it represented 5.8 percent.” In simple terms: “If gasoline breaks through $4 a gallon by Memorial Day, that would mean spending on gasoline would have risen by $100 billion since the beginning of the year, or roughly the size of the tax rebate checks going out.” According to Monday’s Providence Journal, “The United States, with the lowest fuel efficient vehicles and longest average commutes in the world, is the only major industrialized country to witness a surge in oil consumption since the severe oil shortages of the 1970s and the 1980s.” While European nations have taxed fuel to pay for other more efficient forms of transportation, the U.S. has taken an Underdog approach to the problem; swooping in with borrowed cash to pay the ransom oil companies demand on our transportation and heating needs. Next week President Underdog will begin mai

"Desir was put on the floor, and a nurse tried CPR, to no avail, Oliver said. A "box", possibly a defibrillator, also was applied but didn't function effectively, he said. "I cannot believe what is happening on the plane," he said, sobbing. "She cannot get up, and nothing on the plane works." Oliver said he then asked for the plane to "land right away so I can get her to a hospital," and the pilot agreed to divert to Miami, 45 minutes away. But during that time, Desir died, Oliver said. "Her last words were, 'I cannot breathe,"' he said. ...Guardian

The life-giving power of literature
tidbit2

I used to get bored out of my brain before I started reading I could never latch on to it to easily till I found words of wisdom and writing that could be applied to life also learning about the outside world/universe through factual writing like national geographic and the guardian newspaper has really opened a lot of doors for life, conversation, enjoyment and distraction reading offered answers to the meaning of life and the universe which had seriously distressed me beforehand the quote from volataire sums it up: Despite the enormous quantity of books, how few people read! And if one reads profitably, one would realize how much stupid stuff the vulgar herd is content to swallow every day." — Voltaire this is particulary true in the days of crappy prime time tv shows and hyped up media I also read somewhere about the calming effect good reading material promoting creative thought can have on ones nerves which I found very true oh and the source goodreads is awesome che

Racist Agitates Failed HomeBuyers
davboz
by davboz   1-24-2008    1
Having actually benefited from the largest lowering of the financial bar - in terms of qualifying for home loans - certain low-income groups have found in the demographics a reason to pretend it's racism that they have failed to make their payments and/or the due-diligence required to refinance or understand what they had entered into contractually. We know that there is no white t-shirt, musclebound, gold earring guy who jumps out of the Mr.Clean bottle That's marketing. It should be clear that a $250,000 home will never give you equity at the rate of $250 a month. Let alone ever get paid for. It was never a secret that these payments would jump after an introductory period. It was on news, talk shows, T.V., radio, print, web, etc. What part of "interest only" makes you think that is an arrangement one should relax with? Now suddenly the Rev.Suckup inflames people into thinking they're being targeted because they are black. Democrats would freeze rates for years thereby putting th

Baltimore Suing Wells Fargo For Discrimination Against Minorities
urbanlife
by urbanlife  1-10-2008    1
"This wave of foreclosures in minority neighborhoods really threatens to undermine the tremendous progress the city has made in developing distressed neighborhoods and moving the city ahead economically." "Foreclosures have a more profound effect in minority communities because they are closest to the line of distressed neighborhoods in many cities. That causes big problems for the cities, not just the lost income from taxes but also the long-term social costs. Programs are going to be needed to stabilize the communities to be rebuilt."
