Reason Enough to Love You, by Dorothy Allison
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  6-3-2009    4
And that morning when I woke up crying not able to say why, it could have been anything, any of ten good reasons to just lay back and cry, you slid over and put your whole body over mine gently, your hand in my hair, your mouth on my ear, wrapping silence and love and the muscles of your thighs all around me and let me cry let me cry like no one ever let me before.

America Doesn't Need A "Savior"
merrie
by merrie  2-3-2009    1
In other words, Obama may think America sucks, MoveOn may think America sucks, and Nancy Pelosi’s constituents may think America sucks… but a constant wash of “America sucks, but Obama absolves America of its sins” is unlikely to wear well with the vast majority of people who don’t think America sucks. . * PBS Commentator John Ridley says that Obama is the first real American to be president. * NBC Newspuppet Brian Williams says all presidents before Obama were “evil.” * Former NBC Newspuppet Tom Brokaw compared the USA, pre-Obama, to the Communist Bloc. * Triumph of Affirmative Action “Film-Maker” Spike Lee declared that “You’ll have to measure time by `Before Obama‘ and `After Obama‘” * Spastic MSNBC Newspuppet Chris Matthews compared the pre-Obama USA to czarist Russia, and the Bush family to the Romanovs.

WW II "Name Trees" Inscribed By U.S. Soldiers Felled
merrie
by merrie  6-13-2008    2
Local people are calling for the few “name trees” that still stand to be classified as historic monuments and saved from the same fate. “It should have been done a long time ago,” said Nicolas Navarro, the curator of a Second World War museum in the grounds of his family’s 13th-century Château du Taillis near by. “It’s sad and pathetic that it wasn’t.” The trees surrounded land in the heart of Saint Pierre de Varengeville-Duclair forest, near Rouen in Normandy, which was once home to a US army camp named after the Twenty Grand brand of cigarettes. “Basically, they spent their time carving their names into the trees with knives and bayonets,” Mr Navarro said. Mr Navarro said that more than 150 trees were felled last year, a destruction that went unnoticed beyond the district for months. He is determined now to preserve the ones that remain.

Obama, Religion and the Public Square
merrie
by merrie  6-10-2008
Yet there is more to Mr. Obama and religion than the recent headlines might suggest. Here is how he put it: "Secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering into the public square. Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King – indeed, the majority of great reformers in American history – were not only motivated by faith but repeatedly used religious language to argue for their cause. To say that men and women should not inject their 'personal morality' into public policy debates is a practical absurdity. Our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition." In his now-famous address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association in 1960, John Kennedy called for "an America where the separation of church and state is absolute." He went on to state that a president's faith should be "his own private affair."

Pangea Day joins audiences around the world
papananook
by papananook  5-12-2008
The program was broadcast in seven languages. The live audience at Sony was about 1,200, joining crowds of 2,000 each in London, Rio de Janeiro, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Mumbai, India, and Kigali, Rwanda, with smaller gatherings in other cities. At Sony, there were big video screens and a news ticker that listed a roll call of the cities and small towns participating (Each of the films and a one-hour highlight show was put up on the web at pangeaday.org right after the broadcast.)

Dorothy Day's diaries published
hayesstw
by hayesstw  4-8-2008
Dorothy Day's diaries are to be published. They were sealed for 25 years after her death in 1980, and should provide an interesting insight into her life and ministry. Dorothy Day was a Catholic anarcho-pacifist, and is a good illustration of the principle that theological conservatism leads to political liberalism, and vice versa.

Elementary School Teacher Tapes Student's Mouth Shut
happyhomemaker
by happyhomemaker  2-4-2007
My daughter has a severe form of ADHD and is on 2 forms of Ritalin. A long acting in the morning, and a fast acting in the afternoon at school to help push her through the rest of the day. She's a serious speed talker. I'm mean talking non-stop without taking a breath from the minute she wakes until the minute she sleeps. Sometimes I'm almost glad school starts just so I'm glad to hear dead silence. But in all seriousness, thankfully she has a teacher who's very understanding, and knows how to get her to behave in class and allows her time to play and talk. As well, if a teacher were to do this, no matter how "nice" they were, I'd be extremely upset by this. I can definitely sympathize with the mother on this one.
