Portraits by Hitler
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-3-2009    1
Hitler also documented a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. His nude portraits of Anton Drexler and Dietrich Eckart, ca. 1919, and of Himmler, Goring and Goebbels in the 30's and 40's indicate these people were hiding much more than just concentration camps. So, in fact, was Eva Braun; one of the portraits has revealed her to have been endowed with a full set of masculine genitalia and a prosthetic bosom, perhaps explaining why Hitler was known to become so infuriated when Eva sunbathed in the nude. Money raised by the auction will be used to help finance projects and fund medical research in the fight against HIV-related infection and AIDS.

Right and wrong lessons from biology
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-27-2008
The opposite view stresses that evolution is an extremely effective way of searching parameter space, and that in consequence is that we should assume that biological design solutions are likely to be close to optimal for the environment for which they’ve evolved. Where these design solutions seem odd from our point of view, their unfamiliarity is to be ascribed to the different ways in which physics works at the nanoscale. At its most extreme, this view regards biological nanotechnology, not just as the existence proof for nanotechnology, but as an upper limit on its capabilities.

Human beings only have a 50-50 shot of making through the 21st century

nanotech pioneer K. Eric Drexler. Drexler describes grey goo in Chapter 11 Engines Of Destruction: "...early assembler-based replicators could beat the most advanced modern organisms. 'Plants' with 'leaves' no more efficient than today's solar cells could out-compete real plants, crowding the biosphere with an inedible foliage. Tough, omnivorous 'bacteria' could out-compete real bacteria: they could spread like blowing pollen, replicate swiftly, and reduce the biosphere to dust in a matter of days. Dangerous replicators could easily be too tough, small, and rapidly spreading to stop - at least if we made no preparation. We have trouble enough controlling viruses and fruit flies."
