Fossils tell of mass exodus from sea
pokkets
by pokkets  9-26-2008
Creatures could develop some protection from the sun in the water, but the land was wide open, and predators were yet to get anywhere the efficiency of ocean based predators. They can understand why shelled arthropods had the protection to survive, but can't understand the survival of soft bodied things like worms and Molluscs? then perhaps they can explain why a slug like creature evolved a shell and branched unto the Snail genotype. i don't imagine life is safe anywhere for exposed slugs and worms, and solar radiation, particularly UV Light can accelerate development. and change. Perhaps they were moving to the place that was the least dangerous.

A Whale of a Story
vandamonium
by vandamonium  7-5-2008
What a mess.... I bet it stunk to high heaven. We had a whale that beached just 7-8 mile down the beach from where I am. They did a partial autopsy on the spot and took what the wanted then they buried the rest in the dunes.

Jaffa (Yafa) former Arab city.
righthand
by righthand  5-14-2008    1
Until the mid-19th century, Jaffa's orange groves were mainly owned by Arabs, who employed traditional methods of farming. Jaffa's citrus industry began to flourish in the last quarter of the 19th century. Shamuti oranges were the major crop, but citrons, lemons and mandarin oranges were also grown.

Notice in the first pic the semi-buried branches. The bulk of the dunes is stationary, but there are "escape dunes" that can migrate, sometimes daily, and can create patches of ghost forest. This clip inspired by this one, and by experiencing them firsthand.

Namib Desert: The Tallest Dunes
amgumen
by amgumen  3-22-2008    2
In the northern part of the desert, the landscape is dominated by ashy dunes with dark brown edges, while the southern desert is flat and stony. Sand storms are common. The sand of Namib varies from yellow to orange and ocher, due to the richness in iron oxides. The dunes of Sossusvlei are the tallest in the world: 300 m (1,000 ft).

syncopath
by syncopath  3-2-2008
i have a short confession -)) i do have a grain of a deep sentiment to this locus -)) i was staying there 4 awhile 20 years ago ... there was no electricity, no flowing water but from a far away well, there was some few houses of fishermen and very few tourist. beautiful seashore amazing pure white dunes hosting some blue-turquoise lagoons. a lot of music & of course the traditional sexual dance called Forro. It seems a bit different today (from the vids))) .. yet some still claim it is a very high approximation to Paradiso .............. ;-)
