Also miss jolie says she likes mccain too and hasn't decided who to endorse....huh? Aren't you supposed to be somewhat enlightened, or do you not know that the african daughter you hold in every picture had parents who suffered and died because of the republican party's worldwide economic assault on africa over the last few decades since reagan? whaaaa...??????!!!! (for that matter, the thai and vietnamese sons you are photo'd with weekly too!!!? who's pictures you sell to raise money to help the poor? Their families are victims of America's right wing military incursions too. Mccain wants to continue with the idea of war for profit...the americans are over that thinking now! They have drugged our troops and lower classes into supporting their oil business atrocities for long enough. We want to save not lose our souls thank you. Now go back to making your movies about women who love to handle big guns that shoot hundreds of people to death. Ps....it might be good for your asian and afr

Europe's 'Earth Explorer' to Map Planet "Inside Out" From Space
papananook
by papananook  8-12-2008    1
The five hundred million dollar satellite is expected to survive for 20 months - at twenty-five million a month that makes it even higher maintenance than Paris Hilton, but infinitely more useful. Data provided by the satellite will map everything from ocean depths to the magma core of the planet, providing data of unprecedented accuracy for everything from climate physics to geophysics. In an interesting coincidence, GOCE will be launched on the same day the Large Hadron Collider powers up. Project leader Kal-El urges readers not to pay too much attention to this, nor ask why the nose cone seems to be full of diapers and a red cape.

The History of the Bikini
pussycatdoll
by pussycatdoll  8-6-2008    2
In 1996, when the Miss World contest was held in Bangalore, a dozen Indian groups opposed the event claiming that the contest degraded women by featuring them in bikinis. Social activist Subhashini Ali commented, “It’s not an IQ test. Neither is it a charity show. It’s a beauty contest in which these things have been added on as sops.” The protests were so intense that the organizers were finally compelled to shift the venue of the “Swimsuit Round” to Seychelles. Afghan Miss Earth 2003 contestant Vida Samadzai was severely condemned by the Afghan Supreme Court, which said, “such a display of the female body goes against Islamic law and Afghan culture.”

Do they really think the earth is flat?
PKiller
by PKiller  8-4-2008
To me even to have this question and belief is astonishing. Do flat-earther's have any idea how many agencies would have to be involved to create and sustain a conspiracy of the magnitude they describe. Mind boggling.

T-Rex no match for 'Big Tooth'
pokkets
by pokkets  8-4-2008
Carcharodon megalodon, or 'Big Tooth', an ancestor of today's Great White Shark, may have grown to 16 metres and weighed 100 tonnes, generating between 10.8 to 18.2 tonnes of bite force.- between 3 and 6 times that of the T-Rex. Still the T-Rex probably got better traction, and kept clear of sharks. The largest modern Great Whites have about 1.8 tonnes, An African Lion 560 kg, and we can manage about 80kg (Great for biting apples, or cracking walnuts or teeth) We have still managed to become the world's most efficient predator artificially. We can wipe something out just because we don't like the way it looks at us.

End of life care
zalisan
by zalisan  8-2-2008
Helping people to confront the reality of death is rightly seen as one of the hospice movement’s biggest feats. But on this front too, it still has some way to go. Whether in the earthy, family-minded Mediterranean or the buttoned-up culture of the Teutonic world, men and women hesitate to contemplate the practical details of planning for a messy, protracted demise. Although talking about death is no longer a taboo, dementia and incontinence remain hard to discuss. Workers in palliative care across the world already talk to each other in a very down-to-earth way. But as Dr Lynn says,“we need to start telling the story” to the general public if the movement is to achieve another 40 years of success.

The world's greatest LIGHT PROTEST will take place on August 7th 2008 - one day before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. At least 100 million people from all over the world will light a candle and say YES for freedom in Tibet! The Campaign started on facebook from the desktop of David Califa, 52, a retired private individual with an investment banking background, from Ramat Hasharon, Israel. Mr. Califa has been financing it with his own private funds. "Candle for Tibet" has quickly developed into a global movement which operates from a multilingual (25 languages, all translated by volunteers) web site with its own social network alongside.

Eclipse-Watchers Worldwide Gear Up For Friday's Event
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2008
Before there was a scientific explanation for eclipses, myth and mystery was pervasive. Many cultures thought a demon or dragon was devouring the sun. In ancient China, "any unusual phenomenon involving celestial bodies was noted for potential omens, either good or bad, that might befall the current Emperor," according to Sten Odenwald of the department of physics at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The ancient Chinese banged pots and drums to shoo the frightful sun-eating character away. In India, people would immerse themselves in water to help the sun fight the dragon. Even nowadays many myths persist. In Egypt, as one example, children are often kept indoors with windows covered or shades drawn during an eclipse. Risk of eye injury Eclipses can indeed be dangerous

Incredible Discoveries Made in Remote Chilenean Caves
ratilfar
by ratilfar  7-31-2008
Cont.... "There were no footprints where we were going, and I only saw the slightest evidence of human use," Wynne told LiveScience by email Monday night as the day's work was sinking in. Wynne and his colleagues moved carefully through the cave to place a sensor along the wall, part of their NASA-funded research. "Much to my surprise, as we moved about halfway through this passage, my foot completely sunk into the soil," Wynne said. "It was mud! There was a lot of it. It was all contained within the salt stream flow that meandered through this passage." There is no known source of water nearby.

Breakthrough in Solar Energy: Scientists mimic plants' energy storage system
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-31-2008    2
'GIANT LEAP' FOR CLEAN ENERGY Sunlight has the greatest potential of any power source to solve the world's energy problems, said Nocera. In one hour, enough sunlight strikes the Earth to provide the entire planet's energy needs for one year. James Barber, a leader in the study of photosynthesis who was not involved in this research, called the discovery by Nocera and Kanan a "giant leap" toward generating clean, carbon-free energy on a massive scale. "This is a major discovery with enormous implications for the future prosperity of humankind," said Barber, the Ernst Chain Professor of Biochemistry at Imperial College London. "The importance of their discovery cannot be overstated since it opens up the door for developing new technologies for energy production thus reducing our dependence for fossil fuels and addressing the global climate change problem."
