POPSExpert: World is Entering a Little Ice Age At present, assured the world is going through a transition phase where solar activity diminishes considerably, "so that in two years or so, there will be a small ice age that lasts from 60 to 80 years," and the immediate consequence of this He added, will be drought. Here's hoping Algore freezes his gonads off...whoops... forgot he has no gonads....

POPSStudying volcanoes with flying balloons :) "The balloons are piloted remotely by satellite link," Durant explained, "with flight visualization using Google Earth. We were looking at tropospheric volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and water, which can be hazardous to human and animal health and degrade ecosystems."

POPST-Rex no match for 'Big Tooth' Carcharodon megalodon, or 'Big Tooth', an ancestor of today's Great White Shark, may have grown to 16 metres and weighed 100 tonnes, generating between 10.8 to 18.2 tonnes of bite force.- between 3 and 6 times that of the T-Rex. Still the T-Rex probably got better traction, and kept clear of sharks. The largest modern Great Whites have about 1.8 tonnes, An African Lion 560 kg, and we can manage about 80kg (Great for biting apples, or cracking walnuts or teeth) We have still managed to become the world's most efficient predator artificially. We can wipe something out just because we don't like the way it looks at us.

POPSFor Many Student Athletes, Game Over The wealthiest nation in the history of the Earth (at least for now), and we can't educate our young people and provide physical education?! Unbelievable. Thanks, George Bush and No Child Left Behind!

POPSBio-Earth: Are Planets Living Super-Organisms? He believes that expanding the study of life sciences to the core of our world and the depths of outer space will help us find distant relatives of our own Earth -- planets that could also sustain life. To explain why contintental plates drift on the surface of the Earth's molten mantle, Maruyama argues that continents actually have life cycles. Old, cold plates on continental fringes sink to “plate graveyards” deep in the Earth’s mantle, and then rise again, creating volcanoes fueled by three-dimensional convection movements deep below the surface.

POPSAntarctica: Giant River of Ice Triggers Massive Sesmic Signals The glacial earthquake stems from the stop and start motion of an ice stream. The data show that the river moves approximately 18 inches within ten minutes, but then remains still for some 12 hours, before moving another 18 inches. And the quakes happen when the ice moves.

POPSLarge methane release could cause abrupt climate change “This is a major concern because it’s possible that only a little warming can unleash this trapped methane. Unzippering the methane reservoir could potentially warm the Earth tens of degrees, and the mechanism could be geologically very rapid. Such a violent, zipper-like opening of the clathrates could have triggered a catastrophic climate and biogeochemical reorganization of the ocean and atmosphere around 635 million years ago.”

POPSLook To Mars For The Truth On Global Warming
lasting some 50 years, after which temperatures will go up again. Because of the scientific significance of this period of global cooling that we're about to enter, the Russian and Ukrainian space agencies, under Dr. Abdussamatov's leadership, have launched a joint project to determine the time and extent of the global cooling at mid-century. The project will marshal the resources of spacecraft manufacturer Energia, several Russian research and production centers, and the main observatory of Ukraine's Academy of Sciences. By late next year, scientific equipment will have been installed in a space-station module and by early 2009, the space team will be conducting a regular survey of the sun. With the data, the project will help mankind cope with a century of falling temperatures, during which we will enter a mini ice age. "A global freeze will come about regardless of whether or not industrialized countries put a cap on their greenhouse- gas emissions."

POPSNext decade may be cooler, not warmer Obviously this is not an exact science, climate and weather being so complex. Hoax theorists and denialists will no doubt jump all over this news and continue to drag their feet on action.

POPS100 Greatest Discoveries, Discovery Channel: Genetics Bill Nye "The Science Guy" hosts a new series that highlights the greatest scientific discoveries of all time, from the earliest time to the present day. The series features nine episodes: Evolution, Earth Sciences, Medicine, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Genetics and Biology, plus a up episode featuring the top 10 discoveries of all time. This is a fun and instructive series, with a lot of historical re-creations, archival footage, visits to interesting scientific research facilities and interviews with present-day scientists including several Nobel laureates - all presented with the flair and humor associated with television's "Science Guy" Bill Nye. POPSPeru meteorite may rewrite the record books
I suppose that's what record books are for, but there do seem to be a lot broken lately. The fact that this was going 50 times faster than expected is deep for more reasons than one. A faster object can have the effect of a much larger object. The size factor may mean we can get a puncture in the crust instead of a crater. Which may also mean an entirely different result. There is the basic physics equation Force=MassxAcceleration. The force involved in the case of a meteorite like this is the amount exerted by the planet to bring it from 24,000kph to a dead stop. Of course scientists are not only as surprised as they ever are, but there has to be another set of rules made, which means back to the drawing board. I'm sure the next thing they should do is build a bigger drawing board. Maybe they need to their calculations in pencil. There's the problem that every meteorite is unique, but there are many things that are likely to strike before a meteorite. Many are self destructive.
