Histamine Foods
turina
by turina  11-12-2009
The underlying cause of many types of food intolerance is the elevated levels of histamine found in certain foods and substances; your digestive system has difficulty digesting the ingredients that contain these high levels of histamine, especially if you are deficient in the natural enzyme called diamine oxidase

Dinosaur find linked to giant plant eaters
ofcapri
by ofcapri  11-12-2009
The Aardonyx celestae species dates back to the early Jurassic period. Dr. Yates said the creature found in South Africa stood nearly 6 feet high at the hip and weighed about 1,100 pounds. It was about 10 years old when it died, and its death may have been caused by drought. The species shares many characteristics with the plant-eating herbivores that walked on two legs, Dr. Yates said. But the new species also has similar attributes to dinosaurs that grew to massive sizes and went about on all fours with long necks and whip-like tails.  We do not protect our water as well as we should but we do a better job than most of the areas we are importing fish from, I believe. Wonder if they sell portable kits so you could test your meal before ordering at Red Lobster is you still kill fish - er eat fish. Sorry, I am a vegan - grin.

Healthy Monday: Canada Joins Meatless Monday Movement
disenchantedcitizen

Could this happen here in the biggest meat consuming countries in the world? Don’t we care enough about our health to cut meat out of our diets at least one day a week? Most of our health costs stem from eating red meat. Most of our food costs stem from feeding cattle. Doesn’t it make economic as well as heatlh sense to cut down on our red meat consumption? The First Video Footage of the World's Most Elusive Cat
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  11-8-2009    1
"Andrew Hearn and Joanna Ross, researchers from the United Kingdom’s Global Canopy Programme’s Bornean Wild Cat & Clouded Leopard Project, have been surveying five species of wild cats of Borneo for several years. Their work has uncovered some remarkable findings. Besides capturing the world’s first ever video of the rare cat, the two are also credited for snapping the first photograph of a live bay cat. Based in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, camera trapping and radio-tracking methods are utilized in their research. The program also provides educational materials, community surveys and training courses as well. " (from the article)

Consumer Reports finds BPA in most canned foods
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009
More: …our findings are notable because they indicate the extent of potential exposure: Consumers eating just one serving of the canned vegetable soup we tested would get about double what the FDA now considers typical average dietary daily exposure… A 165-pound adult eating one serving of canned green beans from our sample, which averaged 123.5 ppb, could ingest about 0.2 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day, about 80 times higher than our experts' recommended daily upper limit. And children eating multiple servings per day of canned foods with BPA levels comparable to the ones we found in some tested products could get a dose of BPA approaching levels that have caused adverse effects in several animal studies… Drinking three servings per day of canned apple juice with BPA levels comparable to the levels found in our samples could result in a dose of BPA that is more than our experts' daily upper limit.

Compost Pile Friends
adosuzano
by adosuzano  11-4-2009
they may not look nice but they are big helpers (most of the time). However, if you are concerned about the food web in your compost pile "breaking out," try the following tips: 1. Create a barrier by spreading a line of wood ash (not barbecue ash because of fat residues) or crushed egg shells around your compost pile. This will keep the activity contained within the pile. 2. A similar, but more lethal technique, is to sink small margarine containers full of stale beer, molasses and water, or yeast and water in the ground around the compost pile. Unsuspecting slugs, sow bugs, and earwigs will be attracted to the liquid, crawl inside, and drown. Earwigs can be sprayed with a solution of one tablespoon of liquid soap detergent combined with one quart of water. This will kill the earwigs that are doing damage and spare the helpful bugs that are eating dead organic material. (information from California Integrated Waste Management Board)

'Scar Eating' Enzyme Aids Spine Repair
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2009
Other teams have shown that delivering an enzyme from bacteria that digests scar tissue may help. "The problem has been this enzyme is really sensitive and degrades very fast," says Bellamkonda. He says the enzyme, chondroitinase ABC (chABC), is heat sensitive and must be repeatedly injected or infused into the body to work. Hollow straws Bellamkonda's team found a way to overcome both of those issues. They mixed the enzyme with a sugar called trehalose that made it stable at internal body temperature. And instead of injecting the enzyme into the spinal cord, they put it into tiny hollow straws just twice the length of a single cell. They inject these at the injury site in a special gel that keeps the straws in place. Bellamkonda's team tested the system in rats and found the enzyme prevented scar tissue formation for up to six weeks. "The goal is that at the time the surgeon is removing the offending (vertebrae) bone after the injury you would inject this gel to si
