The Escapist 161 on indie games
emeraldsong
by emeraldsong  8-5-2008
I've noticed that indie games are making a lot of signals on the blogs lately. I haven't found much time to play them, prolly cos' I'm reading during my free time. ;) The Escapist's issue this week on indies actually has a couple of articles from the perspective of people making indie games, it's got a fair bit of business insight. Some of the criticisms of the market's failure to provide free savannah for any and every roaming indie creation reminds me of the criticisms aimed at Scott McCloud's Reinventing Comics. The big businesses have a way of corralling user eyeballs to their own products, and despite the wilderness of the internet it's not a fair ecosystem.

Arctic Scientists Explore a "Lost" 26-Million-Year-Old Ecosystem
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-25-2008    1
“The origin of life discussion comes up because the rocks that are exposed on this very slow spreading ridge are not volcanic, but instead come directly from Earth’s mantle,” says geochemist Susan Humphris. “The chemistry is very much like the volcanism that occurred on the primordial Earth. If you are thinking about origins of life, you’d like to have an area that is the closest analog to what was happening on the early Earth.”

The Earth's 6th Great Mass Extinction is Occurring as You Read This
papananook
by papananook  7-18-2008    1
With the human population expected to reach 9-10 billion by the end of the century and the planet in the middle of its sixth mass extinction — this time due to human activity — the next few years are critical in conserving Earth’s precious biodiversity. The cause of the Sixth Extinction, Homo sapiens, means we can continue on the path to our own extinction, or, preferably, we modify our behavior toward the global ecosystem of which we are still very much a part. At a casual glance, the physically caused extinction events of the past might seem to have little or nothing to tell us about the current Sixth Extinction, which is a human-caused event. For there is little doubt that humans are the direct cause of ecosystem stress and species destruction in the modern world through transformation of the landscape, overexploitation of species, pollution, and the introduction of alien species

Wildlife in Florida Everglades - pics
righthand
by righthand  7-10-2008
The Everglades, a vast chain of marshes that is home to manatees, Florida panthers, great egrets and other threatened species, was declared a protected area in 1934 The health of the park dubbed the River of Grass has suffered greatly in recent years, hurt by polluted runoff generated by sugar farms that lie in the centre of the ecosystem. The land sale, unveiled by Florida governor Charlie Crist, jump-starts one of the biggest environmental rebuilding projects in modern US history. Crist said the pact was "as monumental as our nation's first national park," adding that he hopes to sign a final pact by September.

Trawlermen Cling on as Oceans Empty of Fish - And the Ecosystem Is Gasping
papananook
by papananook  7-8-2008
I saw what the trawles and longliners did to the tuna fishery in Hawaii. It would, of course, be better for everyone if these unsustainable practices could be shut down gently without the need for a crisis or the loss of jobs, but this seems to be more than human nature can bear. The EU has a programme for taking fishing boats out of service - the tonnage of the European fleet has fallen by 5% since 1999 - but the decline in boats is too slow to overtake the decline in stocks. Every year the EU, like every other fishery authority, tries to accommodate its surplus boats by setting quotas higher than those proposed by its scientific advisers, and every year the population of several species is pressed a little closer to extinction. The fishermen make two demands, which are taken up by politicians in coastal regions all over the world: they must be allowed to destroy their own livelihoods, and the rest of us should pay for it.
