GPS for the Moon -Helping Humans Navigate the Lunar Surface
Mohir
by Mohir  7-23-2008    1
"We will help with navigation, but also with astronauts' health as well," Li said. "We want them to avoid the stress of getting lost, or getting frustrated with the equipment. Lunar navigation isn't just a technology problem, it's also biomedical." The researchers have named the entire system the Lunar Astronaut Spatial Orientation and Information System (LASOIS).

mafia001
by mafia001  7-23-2008
LoveLetter began appearing as a Valentine's-style message in e-mail inboxes all over the world in May 2000. The subject line was ILOVEYOU and the message read "kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me." Attached to the e-mail was a program which, when the recipient opened it, immediately forwarded the message on to everyone in their address book, gradually clogging the world's networks. LoveLetter was one of the largest "mass mailers", and also used social engineering - the tactic of exploiting human nature - to devastating effect, in this case by pulling on the recipient's heartstrings.

Beijings Iconic Landmarks' Very Western Look
merrie
by merrie  7-20-2008
The eye-catching building, which is nearly finished, will be the headquarters of China Central Television, the staid propaganda arm of China's ruling Communist Party, and it's perhaps the boldest and most daring of several new buildings that have given Beijing a stunning new appearance for the upcoming Summer Olympic Games. The last of them is the new television building, the CCTV headquarters, and it can nearly make one dizzy standing on the ground and looking up at its odd, teetering 49-story towers connected by a multistory, cantilevered, jagged cross section over open space at a vertiginous 36 stories up in the air. Designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, the building has been called an "angular marvel" and a "dazzling reinvention of the skyscraper." Its engineering is so complex that the designers say such a building couldn't have been built a few years ago. That's because it took immense computing power. http://www.mcclatchydc.com/264/story/44618.html

Biocultural Evolution in the 21st Century: The Evolutionary Role of Religion
Djiezes
by Djiezes  7-16-2008
My outline introduces the concept of biocultural evolution, particularly with reference to the Twentieth Century and the prospects for the Twenty-First Century. I then explore the concept of complex distributed systems to characterize all highly creative processes in both culture and nature. Subsequently, I turn to the problem of complexity horizons and the challenge that these present for traditional moral reflections. Humans are then characterized as a Lamarckian wild card in epic of evolution. I close by discussing the evolutionary role of religion. International law should govern release of GM mosquitoes
kmcolo
by kmcolo  7-15-2008    3
This brings up an interesting point - what is the role of the nation state as the world "internationalizes"? What good are EPA regulations when we breath polluted air from China? What good are European regulations on CO2 when the U.S. wont regulate? How does the U.S. compete in stem cell research when it has restrictions on funding? The nation state is no longer the venue for prevention of things like cloning, bacterial engineering, genetic selection, GM foods, etc. We may restrict cloning in the States, but then cloning moves to Mexico or China.
