Frederick Clarkson, in a 2006 article, outlines the activities of the Institute for Religion and Democracy since the eighties. Mainly funded by right-wing think tanks, he says, it has attempted to foment schism and disrupt governance in the largest denominations in the National Council of Churches.

Pope Mesmerizes Bush Toward Catholicism, Religion of Tyrants
blueridge
by blueridge  6-15-2008    3
Not surprising considering his religious superstition, theological ignorance, and false Christian views of war (contrary to Christian principles of "Just Wars" of self defense alone) and worship of democracy as a means of saving the world through military Crusades. He would fit right in with tyrants of Holy Roman Empires of the past. The Tower of St. John impressed him--Rome mesmerizes its ignorant victims through superstition, priest-craft, and relics and symbols, without which it is essentially empty. By the way, this is not to let pagans escape, for some of them were also among the greatest tyrants of imperial wars as well--i.e. Alexander the Great (who was a bisexual pedophile), Caligula, Nero, Pharaohs of Egypt and Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to name a few. Babylon the Great is typified in the Bible as a final world empire that will be destroyed, headed by a false Christian leader, whom the Reformers believed were Roman Popes but would also fit false Christian presidents

Virginia Churches Fight Over Church Property
zizzy
by zizzy  5-25-2008    1
Keep your eye on this one. What's at stake here is the ability of schismatic congregations (or dioceses) to walk away from their denominations and keep their property, in contravention of canon law. That's no small concern, particularly in high-rent districts like Northern Virginia. If the ruling goes against the denominations, we could see Akinola and his creepy buddies breaking up churches all over the place. I think the law here should be clear: civil courts don't get involved in ecclesial disputes. The schismatics should live with the consequences of their actions. http://www.ethicsdaily.com/article_detail.cfm?AID=10500 I find this interesting because of the schism between liberal and conservative Episcopalians over the acceptance of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) persons. That is what led to the split and now they are fighting over property. Peter Jasper Akinola is the Anglican Primate of the Church of Nigeria.

War Casualities Not Forgotten
debbyski
by debbyski  1-12-2008    3
"Thousands of crosses and stars cover four tapestry-like "peace panels" across the imposing stone walls in the nave of the church. That location was selected so worshipers would see a constant and powerful reminder of the war's human toll as they leave the sanctuary. We wanted to create a symbol that would help us stay uncomfortable, that would constantly remind us of the daily needs to build peace, to choose peace in everything we do," said psychologist Lo Sprague, a member of the committee."

The 10 Biggest Religion Stories

#4 | The Pope and Latin Mass Benedict XVI relieves priests of having to get their bishop’s permission to celebrate mass in old-school Latin. To many, it is an unwelcome return of church élitism. Others sink happily back into it. #5 | The Slow-Motion Episcopal/Anglican Train Wreck The Episcopal Bishops’ meeting in New Orleans fails to stem the ongoing defection of conservatives over the church’s positions on gays, or the likelihood of a worldwide Anglican split over the same issue. #6 | Green Evangelicals Global warming, along with poverty and torture, have become hot issues to a maturing conservative Christian movement. #7 | The Roar of Atheist Books There may or may not be more atheists, but there are more atheist authors--and readers want to give them a hearing. #8 | Another Blow to a Megachurch A year after Ted Haggard resigned as pastor of Colorado’s New Life Church--having admitted to “immorality” involving a gay escort--a gunman kills two congregants in

Still Remembering Matthew Shepard And The Hate That Yet Exists
DouglasDirk
by DouglasDirk  11-30-2007    1
This story is only one where hate has taken a life. I don't believe that Jesus would approve of such torture nor have a reason to torture. Many fundamentalist Christians feel they have a moral obligation to carry out such attacks. Their hate is the 'real sin'. Their lack of love is the real sin. Their murders are the real sin. We are all one in Christ Jesus!

Jurisdictionalism hits Anglicans
hayesstw
by hayesstw  11-10-2007
Anglicanism in the USA seems to be on its way to becoming a tangled mess of separate jurisdictions even more complicated than the jurisdictional mess in the Orthodox Church there. Some US Episcopalians have linked to Anglican dioceses in various parts of Africa, and now South America has jumped in. For the last 150 years or so the Orthodox diaspora has led to competing episcopal jurisdictions in places like Western Europe, North America and Australia. One can find overlapping juriisdictions of Greek, Russian, Bulgarian, Romanian and other bishops. Now the same thing is beginning to happen among the Anglicans, with Kenyan, Ugandan, Nigerian and now Argentinian bishops having overlapping jurisdictions. At least among the Orthodox, despite language and ethnic differences, there is the same faith.

Church Divide Over Gays
debbyski
by debbyski  10-14-2007    8
Anyone on CM who follows me knows I am quite passionate about this particular subject. Making the biblical case against homosexuality is, in my opinion, and many respected biblical scholars, hard to prove. Indeed, for all the huffing and puffin of born-again Christians, it is significant that in all His public denunciations Jesus Christ never ONCE mentioned homosexuality. In fact, He didn't say ONE word about it. In the end, for a person of faith, zeroing in on one or several passages of the Bible for clues on how to deal with homosexuality is the wrong approach. But let's discuss what Jesus did say. He had plenty to say about divorce, and in no uncertain terms. Except for marital unfaithfulness, he said it was a sin to divorce--and remarry. It seems pretty clear to me that anyone who would zero on passages of the Bible which condemn homosexuality and ignore those that condemn divorce are people who find it very convenient to point out those sins they are not guilty of.
