Murdered young man of Todmorden
notareargunner
by notareargunner  10-4-2008
No matter who or what created the character of this young Englishman, he did not deserve to be murdered on the streets of Todmorden. Close scrutiny of this boy's history shows the dire pits into which the Social Services in Britain have fallen. The cases of mal-management are legend, but the this over paid bureaucratic self opinionated shower of professionals keep making basic errors. Too much eduction and no involvement of reality. They go to work five morning a week, make occasional house call, collect their expense claims, and at four-thirty go to the pub to tell their fellow workers what good eggs they are. They are cracked and need overhauling with a yard brush. Had they done their job correctly, this young man would not have thought there was a need for him to carry and use a knife on some other young person. Social Service employees are so much like their worthless employers, the politician, that it is impossible to tell them apart.

Investigated For Election Fraud In At Least A Dozen States
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2008
ACORN's practices have corrupted our political process as well. It has engaged in questionable election activities for years—stretching back even to the organization's founding years in Arkansas. In recent years, as its political power has increased, so have instances of fraud. In the past few years, it has been investigated for election fraud in at least a dozen states. Want examples? In Florida, ACORN employees filed a false voter registration form for 68-year-old former St. Petersburg Democratic mayor Charles Schuh – amazingly, they registered him as a 30-year-old Republican woman. In Ohio, ACORN and its affiliate Project Vote submitted registration cards that had the highest rate of errors for any voter registration group.

US Textbooks Misrepresent Jews, Israel
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-28-2008    2
A glossary entry on the Ten Commandments describes them as "Moral laws Moses claimed to have received from the Hebrew God Yahweh on Mount Sinai." The same glossary describes the Koran as a "Holy Book of Islam containing revelations received by Muhammad from God." "All in all, there are repeated misrepresentations that cross the line into bigotry," the authors write. Wow. Talk about getting your knickers in a knot. Outrageous misrepresentations? I daren't say a word.

Ethically Bankrupt
merrie
by merrie  9-18-2008    12
Virtually all the mistakes have been caused by errors in regulation — not by "corporate greed," as liberal Democrats would have it. Corporations follow the signals and guidelines set by Washington. When those are faulty, bad things happen and taxpayers pay. Remember this, too, when Congress cranks up hearings and vilifies one CEO after another for "looting" their companies. It was Congress that created the subprime crisis. Any promises that it makes to solve it should be viewed with serious skepticism. Dirksen would have been impressed. By our count, that's about $2 trillion, or 14%, of a $14 trillion economy. How did it happen? One case after another has been made for intervention in the private economy, based on the principle that some private-sector financial institutions, such as Bear Stearns and AIG, are "too big to fail." If they did fail, it would lead to a financial market catastrophe — or what the Fed on Wednesday referred to as "disorderly failure."

Pressure On Charles Rangel To Step Down "Not Even On The Table"

The congressman and his aides have taken pains to be transparent as they discover more and more errors on his tax and financial disclosure forms. Mr. Rangel will hire a leading forensic accountant to investigate his finances for the last 20 years and issue a report to the House ethics committee, Mr. Davis said, emphasizing that neither Mr. Rangel nor his representatives will see the report before it is delivered.

taxes/clinton-bush
ecofeller
by ecofeller  9-14-2008
OK taxes were higher during Clinton, but pretty much everyone except the over 150K income bracket is making less money now. Clinton used this formula to eliminate the federal deficit. Where is it now after 7.5 yrs of Bush and his lower taxes? So the real question is: would you rather pay slightly more in taxes for a Clinton type deficit, or keep your Bush tax cuts and kick the ball down the road to future generations like your kids?

Creationism Analyzed
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  9-11-2008
Creationists are strongly opposed to to a world brought on by evolution, particularly to a world as described by Charles Darwin in his Origin of Species. Creationists (certainly traditional Creationists) oppose the fact of evolution, namely that all organisms living and dead are the end products of a natural process of development from a few forms, perhaps ultimately from inorganic materials ("common descent"). Creationists also oppose claims about the total adequacy of the Darwinian theory of evolution, namely that population pressures lead to a struggle for existence; that organisms differ in random ways brought on by errors in the material of heredity (‘mutations’ in the ‘genes’); that the struggle and variation leads to a natural form of selection, with some surviving and reproducing and others failing; and that the end consequence of all of this is evolution, in the direction of well-adapted organisms.

Keyboard Technology Developer's New Entry: SWYPE
merrie
by merrie  9-10-2008
Kushler says he can type 55 words per minute on his product. Discount the developer's advantage: Real human beings should be able to motor along at about half that, we estimate. The development team is focused on Windows Mobile (smartphones) and also the tablet version of XP and Vista, and Surface. However, Kushler mentioned how great the iPhone hardware was for his method. While no deal with Apple is pending, I do agree with Kushler that his technology would improve the iPhone experience. The company may also develop Swype for other platforms such as Linux and Symbian. Challenges for the company: Selling the technology. For it to work best for users, it should be embedded at the operating system level.

Subliminal learning.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-29-2008    2
"The researchers collected scans of the brain, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, to investigate the specific brain circuitry that is linked to subliminal instrumental conditioning. "The ventral striatum responded to subliminal cues and to visible outcomes in a manner that closely approximates our computational algorithm, expressing reward expected values and prediction errors," says Dr. Pessiglione. "We conclude that, even without conscious processing of contextual cues, our brain can learn their reward value and use them to provide a bias on decision making."
