POPSWhat exactly is democracy? The right would have us believe that democracy equates to freedom....but freedom to do what - starve, wage wars...or simply to consume, be silent and die as the saying goes.

POPSIfill Under Scrutiny I found it interesting that World News Daily is mentioned as the source that broke this "story". Anyone not familiar with this particular web site will not be surprised that they have concerns about Ifill. The clip mentions that WND is a "right-leaning" Web site. That's like calling the Pope slightly religious. Admittedly, my only exposure to this site has been through articles by DeSousa (far right religious nut), I'd take anything they wrote with a pound of salt.

POPSDierrida's Differance I had this exact idea - long before I ever read this! Great minds really do think alike. I'm gonna have to start reading Derrida again.

POPSMindMap on iPhone i Blue Sky This new app is a great way to brainstorm ideas whilst on the go. I use this to and from work so I can plan lessons or produce essay plans for students. Most mindmapping software available on the PC can be expensive. This app allows you to edit the app only on the iPhone but when e-mailed as a PNG furthur editing can take place on the home PC or Mac. This is more limited but it does me that the mind-map can be shared and titled. A PDF export function is great for ensuring your ideas are not altered by others. This app has strong editing features and its userface is clear and simple. Whilst the cost is a little higher than I would hope, there is no denying its functionality. It can be used by students planning out their essays and by staff working out their lessons, schemes of work and building resources

POPSAuthor of "Anne of Green Gables" death a suicide, granddaughter reveals Will this add to or detract from Montgomery's legacy? Butler sees it as an important addition. She writes, "the legacy of L.M. Montgomery, and my grandfather, Rev. Ewan Macdonald, and its related responsibilities and joys, are taken very seriously by my family. I spoke with them before writing this essay and we agreed that it was important for us to share our family's story."

POPSReligious Non-sense - alive and well today. So what non-sense is the church putting forth today -- that is impeding science? How about the idea that a ball of 150 or so cells is a human being -- and is thus stifling research into embryonic stem cells. When does the idiocy end?

POPSMore Economic Cluelessness from the McCain Camp Luskin goes on: McCain campaign adviser and former U.S. senator Phil Gramm was right in July when he said that our current state "is a mental recession." Maybe he was out of line when he added that the United States has become "a nation of whiners." But when it comes to the economy, we have surely become a nation of exaggerators. Yup, that 500 point drop in the Dow? That's all in your head! It's psychosomatic economic hypochondria. In fact, Luskin assured us yesterday that the "crisis" (his quotes, not mine) was over. Don't take investment advise from this man -- or his candidate.

POPSObama is failing After reading an essay comparing both health plans, I concluded that Obama is holding back. But that was before the conventions.

POPSCharles Gibson's Gaffe Charles Krauthammer I was the first to use the term. In the cover essay of the June 4, 2001, issue of the Weekly Standard entitled, "The Bush Doctrine: ABM, Kyoto, and the New American Unilateralism," I suggested that the Bush administration policies of unilaterally withdrawing from the ABM treaty and rejecting the Kyoto protocol, together with others, amounted to a radical change in foreign policy that should be called the Bush Doctrine. Until Iraq. A year later, when the Iraq war was looming, Bush offered his major justification by enunciating a doctrine of preemptive war. This is the one Charlie Gibson thinks is the Bush doctrine. It's not. It's the third in a series and was superseded by the fourth and current definition of the Bush doctrine, the most sweeping formulation of the Bush approach to foreign policy and the one that most clearly and distinctively defines the Bush years.

POPSWhat is the power of things we hold dear? "In the interest of enriching these connections, Turkle pairs each autobiographical essay with a text from philosophy, history, literature, or theory, creating juxtapositions at once playful and profound."

POPSessay on creationism vs evolution long essay talking about how many who defend evolutionary theory need to rethink their approach because often their responses to creationists are inflammatory (thus hundering honest open debate) and/or do not reflect actual science. the essay deals specifically with the origin of life, and is a response to a couple other essys/blogs that are linked to.
