Ringing in Sunday booze sales
finifinito
by finifinito  8-24-2008    1
When I ran my one campaign for public office in 2000, I ran on the Libertarian Party ticket for Indiana House District 100 on a platform of repealing the Sunday Blue Laws regulating the sale of alcohol and vehicles on Sunday. 8 years later a group has formed to lobby for this much needed change in our laws in Indiana.

Obama's Depressing Tax Plan
sillysam
by sillysam  8-21-2008
He has opposed the Columbian Free Trade Agreement, even though it primarily removes tariffs on American exports to that country, with barriers to Columbian exports to America already almost all removed under the Andean Trade Preferences Act. In sharp contrast, McCain has promised tax cuts to promote economic growth and strengthen the U.S. dollar. The federal corporate tax rate today is 35 percent, and McCain suggests cutting it to 25 percent. This would mirror rates elsewhere: The average corporate tax rate in the European Union was slashed from 38 percent in 1996 to 24 percent by 2007. The rates in India and China are lower as well. American companies are not going to produce more jobs and higher wages with this crippling competitive disadvantage.

Georgia/Russia - The story behind the story
willhelm
by willhelm  8-13-2008    1
"No sooner was BTC completed, however, than Western officials began exploring the possibility of other pipelines that could reach beyond Georgia and Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan, which was thought to have some of the world's largest gas reserves. Their interest was not only in "energy security" and the prospect of oil riches for Western energy companies, but also in promoting Western-style democracy and free-market capitalism in the former Soviet republics. " "Putin understands better than anyone that oil and gas are the source of Russia's resurgence as a military and economic power and his own control over the Russian government and key sectors of its economy. It is oil and gas that provide the money to maintain Russia's powerful military, along with a vast internal security apparatus and network of government-controlled enterprises that allow the president-turned-premier to maintain his iron grip on the levers of political and economic power. Multilateralism Comes With A Price
merrie
by merrie  7-26-2008
We must work with our allies, but we also must recognize that multilateralism comes with a price. Coalitions can dilute effectiveness. The European concept of multilateralism is Washington's obeisance to European positions. Western Europe exists in a bubble of stability and affluence, unable to fathom how dangerous extremist ideology in Tehran and Pyongyang can be. Multilateral organizations are not the answer; at best, they are ineffective soap boxes, at worst cesspools of venality. Rose petals and well-digging have never stopped bombs, racism or genocide. A strong military has. Obama says, "Let us remember this history." Let us hope he first learns it. Leadership is about more than rhetoric.

Tanker Rebid May Hurt McCain's Chances
Wisco
by Wisco  7-10-2008
The bid for the tanker was set for a redo because of " significant errors " in the original process. Given McCain's history here, his fingerprints should be all over the problem. Here's hoping it also opens up the issue of McCain's cozy relationship with defense contractors and his involvement in the pork project/scam of the "missile shield."

Obama The "Patriot"
merrie
by merrie  7-2-2008    3
but to mend a flawed system and improve upon it. Obama’s falsification of history has the clear purpose of back-dating the credal concept of “patriotism” in the very birth of the nation. For the uninitiated, it means the “haves”—mainly European-Americans—willingly enduring higher taxes to pay for yet more government programs supposedly helping the have-nots—overwhelmingly, of course, the people with whom Obama identifies, to whose grudges he panders, and whose obsessions he shared for 20 years of attendance at Dr. Wright’s (“God damn America”) so-called church. In Obama’s scheme of things his wife, too, can be classified as eminently patriotic, now that for the first time in her life she can be proud of America thanks to the success of his political career. The “bitter” blue-collar whites, by contrast, cannot be patriotic for as long as they cling to guns, religion, and bigotry, all of which supposedly explains their antipathy to him.

Iroquois Blueprint for the U.S.
Rustee
by Rustee  6-27-2008    2
Our constitution has many Iroquois features. Iroquois lawmakers didn't go to war. Civilian and military rule was separate. The Iroquois had no royalty -- no hereditary rule. Their nations could naturalize new citizens. The League didn't just conquer other nations. It could also admit them to membership. We didn't adopt the Iroquois unicameral system. They had only one council. Franklin fought for that. Because he lost, we have both the senate and the house. Franklin also wanted to let soldiers elect their own officers. That's what the Iroquois did. He lost on that one, too. Still, our constitution is a fine piece of engineering design. We looked at the European kingdoms we'd left behind. And we looked at these people who'd governed themselves so well for so long. In the end Canassatego and the Iroquois tipped the scales in shaping our way of life. And we can be very glad they did.

That Wacky Millennium! Part I (1001-1206)
revenantdm
by revenantdm  6-12-2008
This was too easy to decide on after seeing his Wacky 20th Century timeline. I wish I could have put some of his forward into the clip but I will put it here instead: "At the end of the First Millennium, Rome had long since fallen. The Dark Ages were drawing to a close and the Medieval Period was beginning (although the term "dark ages" wasn't actually coined until the Renaissance, as part of an effort to make the past look bad). The stirrup had changed the face of warfare. Somebody had just invented that, that thing, what do you call it, that harness that goes around a horse's neck and puts the load on the animal's shoulders? That thing. And it changed the course of history, too, believe you me! Also, the modern notion of "progress" pretty much didn't exist; the view of the future was that every day was bleaker than the next, so hurry up and end, world, we're rootin' for that Second Coming." That should set the right tone...

Does it Undo the Christian and Muslims, too?
righthand
by righthand  5-2-2008    5
If it proves that the Exodus is a MYTH then so is the bible. Then so is Christianity and the Muslim faith. And they all know it. Now its not about faith. It's about hoax!!! They should be in court as crooks but the courts too have their vested interest. Think of it as proving to children that there is a Father Christmas. Ok, no one is defrauded or cheated like these religions founded on myth not faith. And all this knowledge arose from attempting to prove that the European Jews had some right to the land of Israel. No matter how creative they have been, all their archaeology efforts have proven is the opposite to their theory. The Zionist have succeeded in one thing. Bringing archaeology into disrepute! And religion!

Oil painting 'invented in Asia, not Europe'
dakotayii
by dakotayii  4-22-2008
A dozen out of the 50 caves were painted with oil painting technique, using perhaps walnut and poppy seed oils, conclude Ms Yoko Taniguchi from the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in Tokyo. "This is the earliest clear example of oil paintings in the world, although drying oils were already used by ancient Romans and Egyptians, but only as medicines and cosmetics", explains Ms Taniguchi, leader of the team. The results showed a high diversity of pigments as well as binders and the scientists identified original ingredients and alteration compounds. Apart from oil-based paint layers, some of the layers were made of natural resins, proteins, gums, and, in some cases, a resinous, varnish-like layer. The paintings are probably the work of artists who travelled on the Silk Road.
