Are the Bushies trying to retain control after January 20th?
Kelika
by Kelika  10-12-2008
More: "Noting that Bill Clinton also ordered up a transition council on Nov. 27, 2000, Light called his "similar but without all the bells and whistles." Among other things, the Bush executive order could keep agencies busy preparing briefing materials and a Transition Directory to include "federal publications and other materials that provide information on each executive department and agency." Cynics might wonder if the Bush team wants to keep its hands in before the order expires on Feb. 20, 2009, one month after the new president takes office. Whatever the motives, said Light, one of the presidential candidates will need the help more than the other. "McCain has done almost nothing about the transition," he said, except to criticize Obama for saying in mid-summer that he was appointing a team to begin contingency planning."

Martial Law Would Be Declared If Bailout Not Passed In House
sahara
by sahara  10-3-2008    6
As former California congressman Dan Hamburg said earlier this year, the 2007 National Defense Authorization Act gives the executive the power to invoke martial law in case of “major public emergencies,” not limited to “a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, a terrorist attack,” but also “any other condition in which the President determines that domestic violence has occurred to the extent that state officials cannot maintain public order.” Obviously, a financial crash and ensuing social chaos of the sort now being implemented by the ruling elite would be characterized as a dire emergency and a near perfect excuse to impose martial law, a long standing goal of the elite. As the Army Times reported last month, a battle-hardened “homeland” brigade is now “going domestic” after spending time in Iraq. It appears this illegal deployment (under Posse Comitatus) is designed to respond to “public disorder” as the economy is deliberately and cynically dismantled at the behest of our rulers.

Bush Can Act Unilaterally Without Congress
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2008
In order to contain the bailout and protect taxpayer dollars, companies should be able to use book accounting for assets deemed by the Treasury as “distressed” 3. Direct the Treasury Secretary to determine that capital basis can be adjusted for inflation by taxpayers. There is a body of legal thought which holds that the Treasury Department can do this by executive action. In order to free up needed capital and unlock frozen assets more easily, the Treasury should make this common sense change to tax rules. If there is a legal brief which details Treasury’s objections to capital basis indexation, it should be released for public dissemination. It’s important to note that all these actions can be done unilaterally by the Executive Branch. There are other reforms which require legislative action (note especially the House Republican Study Committee package), but the above executive steps would do much to alleviate the panic, assure markets, and protect taxpayers.

ACLU Helping Felons Vote: With Registration Deadline Fast Approaching

Lewis is pushing for automatic restoration -- so that rights are restored upon completion of incarceration or supervision. ''There are tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of people in the state whose rights have been restored and they may not know it,'' Howard Simon, executive director of the Florida branch of the ACLU, said Monday. ''Everyone who can vote should vote,'' said Benjamin Burton, executive director of Miami Coalition for the Homeless and The League of Women Voters. The ACLU estimates that 115,000 people have had their voting rights restored but only 9,000 have registered. ''People leaving prison will be our neighbors,'' said Brad Brown, vice president of the Miami Dade chapter of the NAACP. ``The very first step to being integrated is that right to vote. That is the first step to being a good neighbor and forming strong communities.'

John McCain Co-Sponsored 2006 Bill To Clean Up Fannie / Freddie
merrie
by merrie  9-18-2008    2
......for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae's former chief executive officer, OFHEO's report shows that over half of Mr. Raines' compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac. The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator's examination of the company's accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.

Troopergate Investigator Branchflower Slapped With Two Lawsuits

The Republican lawmakers’ suit, not only targeted Branchflower, but French and his Democratic colleague Sen. Kim Elton as well. “The defendants are conducting a ‘McCarthyistic’ investigation in an unlawful, biased, partial and partisan political manner in order to impact the upcoming Alaska’ general and national presidential elections,” it said. Elton is chairman of Alaska’s Legislative Council, which is overseeing Branchflower’s investigation. He is also ardently supporting Obama’s candidacy and has donated $2,000 to his presidential campaign. Monegan had attempted to include items in the Alaska state budget appropriating funds for various items within the Department of Public Safety that Governor Palin had previously vetoed,” contrary to the instructions of the Governor and contrary to the Governor’s budgetary plan, Monegan attempted to travel to Washington D.C. at state Executive Branch expense, in order to request federal funding through ‘earmarks’

Lawsuit To Ensure Cheney Documents Remain Part Of Historic Record

For years, Cheney has resisted revealing any aspect of the inner workings of his office; he has shielded information such as the names of industry executives who advised his energy task force, his travel costs and details, and Secret Service logs of visitors to his office and residence. Since 2003, his office has refused to comply with an executive order requiring entities in the executive branch to file annual reports on their possession of classified data, at one point blocking an inspection by officials from the National Archives.

From the horse's mouth: McCain's health-care advisor's personal blog
enbar
by enbar  8-28-2008
McCain's health-care advisor, John Goodman, thinks we should deal with the problem of uninsured Americans by ordering the Census Bureau to stop calling people "uninsured." I kid you not. He says that since pretty much everyone ends up getting the medical care they need somehow or other, no one's really uninsured. If you read the whole post, you'll also see that Goodman is a little confused about how employer-provided health plans work in real life. This is also the same guy who recently said, commenting on health disparities between whites and nonwhites in the U.S., that "doctors just don’t control our over-eating, over-smoking, over-drinking, and shoot-outs in the hood." (http://snipr.com/3kuaa) Nice, dude. Nice.

These people really are heartless, because they can't be so stupid as to not understand that preventative medicine is not only cheaper, it also saves, lengthens, and improves lives. So they just must be heartless. I don't know what else to call them. Unless I depart from polite discourse.

(What did they fear the reporters might be on to?) Reporters should now do some research to answer the question and they would have an important story. Indonesia is a highly Islamic area targetted for change on the "Pentagon's New Map", and where the Tsunami took place.

CIA Official: Cheney Likely Ordered Forged Letter to Saddam
blueridge
by blueridge  8-9-2008    8
This was intended to link Iraq to 9/11. This vindicates my statement about the White House denial and that it was likely Cheney who considers himself "not a part of the Executive branch", but it was drafted on White House letterhead. We now have DOCUMENTED PROOF of a conspiracy to lie and fabricate evidence for war with Iraq! --all likely headed by Dick Cheney, chief of the neoconservative Fifth Column that hijacked the government by using 9/11 as their pretext for everything. For Cheney to use White House letterhead to order a forged letter from the CIA is also a blatant usurpation of power , making use of power that is not his ("not part of Executive branch"). Did Bush know or did Cheney act alone?

GOP And Bipartisan Effort To Force Democrats To Lift A Drilling Ban
merrie
by merrie  7-27-2008
Washington - As Congress heads into its last week before August recess and political conventions, there's one big item on the must-do list: Action to ease energy costs for American families. ongressional leaders are increasingly deadlocked over what to do. In response, frustrated rank-and-file members on both sides of the aisle are stepping up efforts to find common ground. Rep. Nick Lampson (D) of Texas is now pursuing his own version of an offshore drilling bill that would dedicate all $2.6 trillion in expected royalties to research on alternative energy. Last week, Republicans blocked three Democratic bills in as many days: On Thursday, the House rejected a measure that would have released about 70 million barrels of oil from the nation's SPR. On Friday, Senate Republicans blocked a move that would stop excessive speculation in energy markets. On Saturday, the GOP opposed taking up a $5.1 billion Senate measure to help low-income Americans pay utility bills this year.

Can they pay their creditors without penalty under the same arrangement? We all know the answer to that one, don't we.
