In defense of jaywalking
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009    1
More: today the word jaywalking is often used as a sort of blanket justification for the dominating presence of cars on city streets. It also reflects a social bias against those people not in cars. (Note this comment in a Federal Highway Administration report: "Still, almost no one can avoid occasional pedestrian status," as if they were discussing exposure to a venereal disease.) …the Netherlands, which has essentially legalized jaywalking, has an enviable pedestrian safety record. …Finally, read newspapers very carefully. A number of studies have documented that media coverage of traffic crashes is selective, framed in certain predictable ways, and often misrepresents the true frequency or nature of actual risk. Jaywalking makes better copy for columnists than actually probing the complex nature of traffic safety.

The $cience of Harry Potter
merrie
by merrie  10-25-2009    1
The museum defends the intellectual value of what is sure to be a cash cow of an exhibit by noting that the 200 movie props it features offer a window into innovation. “You see these props and think, ‘How did they do that?’ It is an inspiration for people to explore what it took to create these movie worlds,” said Paul Fontaine, vice president of education at the museum. And that inspiration is essential to scientific innovation, he says. “When you think of the foundations of science, it is creativity; what it takes to transform fantasy to the screen. We hope people take away those foundation skills,” Fontaine said. The museum is home to displays about DNA, electricity, astronomy and anatomy. But some area academics agree a re-creation of Hogwarts is not out of place. Andrew Cohen, physics professor at Boston University, references popular movies in his lectures to make complex theories tangible. So, could Hagrid’s Care of Magical Creatures

Research: Stereotypes Loom Larger As Our Brains Age
Lexica
by Lexica  10-9-2009
More: The second paper… contains a way around this problem.… "with explicit labeling, older adults were able to discount their stereotypes and avoid processing difficulties when subsequent stereotype-inconsistent information was encountered… when counter-stereotypical information is explicitly provided at encoding (that is, the first stage of the memory process, in which stimuli are initially registered), older adults are no more likely than younger adults to rely on stereotypes, and are similarly capable of altering their interpretation of a situation when information suggests that information is incorrect." In real life, of course, no one is pointing out biased statements as they emerge from the mouths or friends, family members or talk-show hosts. So for older adults, the best advice might be to avoid acquaintances who speak in stereotypes. This research suggests prejudice can be contagious, and we become more susceptible as our brains age.

Expo-3 International also believes that it's not enough to design a dynamic exhibit. More importantly, it is our charge to create an environment for a product or service with the sole purpose of producing end results. A showcase exhibit, comprehensively designed and skillfully crafted by Expo-3 International, can be an extremely wise and profitable investment.

Some coma patients able to learn basic responses

The fascinating (but preliminary) findings, presented in Nature Neuroscience, may eventually help doctors evaluate coma patients’ potential for recovery. The authors found a strong correlation between cognitively damaged patients who seemed to exhibit such learning and those who showed some level of improvement months after their injury, as measured by a standard coma recovery scale

Annual Reno National Championship Air Races
merrie
by merrie  9-19-2009    1
The Reno Air Races, also known as the National Championship Air Races, take place each September at the Reno Stead Airport a few miles north of Reno, Nevada, USA. Air racing is billed as 'the world's fastest motor sport' and Reno is one of the few remaining venues. Begun in 1964, the Reno Air Races feature multi-lap, multi-aircraft races between extremely high performance aircraft on closed ovoid courses which range between about 3 miles (Biplanes and Formula One) and about 8 miles (Jet, Unlimited) in length per lap. Aircraft in the Unlimited class, which consists almost entirely of both modified and stock World War II fighters, routinely reach speeds in excess of 400 miles per hour. In 2003, Skip Holm piloted Terry Bland's modified P-51D Mustang, Dago Red, and reached an all-time speed record of 507.105 mph in a six-lap race around the eight-and-a-half mile course. The recently added Sport Class racers, mostly homebuilt aircraft,

The Authoritarian Personality: Fear of Change
zizzy
by zizzy  9-18-2009    6
Look At It This Way There is no doubt that the concept of an Authoritarian Personality very accurately describes a very real personality type. But what's truly amazing is that although social scientists have been aware of this set of character traits for half a century, the general public remains almost totally unaware of the mental makeup that governs the thoughts and behaviors of a third of their friends and neighbors.

Center of consciousness discovered?
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-15-2009    1
more: "A small group of neurons near the base of the brain ... has executive control over the alert status of the entire cerebrum and spinal cord, and can generate loss of pain sensation, postural collapse and loss of consciousness through specific neural circuitry," said the statement. The conclusion is reached from the observation that microinjection of tiny quantities of certain anesthetic drugs into this newly discovered "center of consciousness" in laboratory rats induced a profound suppressive effect on the activity of the cerebral cortex, added the statement. While noting that it is not certain that these results will translate reliably from rats to man, the researchers predicted that "if they do, there are at least two implications of considerable interest." The first one is that this knowledge could help improve treatments for disorders of consciousness and its loss, such as insomnia, excessive sleepiness and even coma. "Perhaps by direct electrica
