For the Record....
ChaosSyren
by ChaosSyren  Yesterday 2:48 PM
  * The ads charge that McCain opposition to a 2003 amendment helped DHL and amounted to turning his back on workers. That's misleading. McCain said he opposed a version of the amendment because it was a special project inserted into an unrelated bill, not to help DHL. And the Teamsters union praised the merger at the time, saying that it would lead to more jobs. And at first, more jobs indeed followed. * The ads also imply that the DHL merger is a direct cause of the job losses in Ohio, which we find to be both unlikely and unsubstantiated. Airborne Express had laid off 2,000 employees before the merger, and analysts at the time said that the struggling carrier would need to make expensive investments in its international infrastructure to remain competitive. Analysis The AFL-CIO and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama are blaming John McCain for the loss of more than 8,000 jobs in southwestern Ohio. The AFL-CIO mailer is the most explicit, sayi

Happy Birthday Noah Webster (Oct 16)
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  10-13-2008
Webster's suggestion of using "tung" instead of "tongue" didn't stick, though. Today Webster's name is synonymous with dictionaries and the date of his birth is observed as Dictionary Day. In his honor, this week we'll present words about words. As Webster said, "the process of a living language is like the motion of a broad river which flows with a slow, silent, irresistible current."

How to Make Vanilla Extract
gingembre
by gingembre  10-12-2008
Mmmm...vanilla! :) "Did you know that each vanilla bean comes from an orchid that has been pollinated by hand? Once the vanilla seed pod has developed, it must be hand picked as well. After picking the curing process takes several months. So if you've ever wondered why vanilla extract, and especially vanilla beans, can be so expensive, this is why."--Elise Bauer This is a very welcoming recipe website to frequent. Her family's tasty recipes are elegantly enhanced by her gorgeous photos and bits of history and geography.

Biotech Buzz Kills
Matthew Herper
by Matthew Herper  10-10-2008
Adam Feuerstein over at TheStreet.com always has smart things to say about biotech stocks. In his column today, he makes both Onyxx, which has a big-selling cancer drug, and Exelixis, which is testing cancer drugs, sound very risky. With the markets a mess, it's hard to see how the extremely risky world of cash-hungry biotechs is going to appeal to investors.

"Everyone knows that technology is more expensive when it first comes out. When we compare the availability and cost of personal computers in 1977 to 2008, we can begin to see how much cheaper technology is available for today." This is interesting article and im gonna save it refer it to others in future.

Oil Outlook Clouds Russia’s Economic Future
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2008    3
That could trigger a vicious circle of falling income and investment, as production gets more expensive in Russia's aging fields. The era of record profits from oil and gas is over - that's according to Russia's Finance Minister Alexey Kudrin. 2008 is likely to be the year of peak oil and gas production in the country. The big oil companies are cutting investment in new projects. Russia has received up to $1 Billion a day in oil revenues in recent years, and the country's budget and economy remain highly dependent on hydrocarbon earnings. The world financial crisis and recession has triggered big falls in the world's oil price. That will significantly affect the Russian budget, according to Mikhail Kroutikhin, partner at Rusenergy.

Jim Cramer: Abandon the market immedieately, no matter the losses you take
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  10-7-2008
"Whatever money you may need for the next five years , PLEASE take it out of the stock market right now, this week. I do not believe you should risk those assets in the stock market." See also: Wall Street's Racket Has Gone Too Far, and We're Going to Pay the Heavy Price When Jim "Mad Money" Cramer says sell immediately, no matter the loss you take... If America goes bankrupt, I hope we at least have enough cash on hand to get our troops a cab ride home from our far-flung (and expensive) empire.

Does anyone know Obama has visited Pakistan, just before being mysteriously flooded with cash for attending expensive universities and purchasing a multi million dollar home? His two college roomates were Pakistani, who are now in charge of raising offshore campaign contributions for him? Michelle Obama's personal advisor is an Iranian. And Rezko arranged for Obama's first job as a lawyer - where is Rezko from? Syria. Beware this Trojan Horse.

New "currency" big in US prisons
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  10-7-2008    2
Mackerel is hot in prisons in the U.S., but not so much anywhere else, says Mark Muntz, president of Global Source, which imports fillets of the oily, dark-fleshed fish from Asian canneries. Mr. Muntz says he's tried marketing mackerel to discount retailers. "We've even tried 99-cent stores," he says. "It never has done very well at all, regardless of the retailer, but it's very popular in the prisons." Mr. Muntz says he sold more than $1 million of mackerel for federal prison commissaries last year. It accounted for about half his commissary sales, he says, outstripping the canned tuna, crab, chicken and oysters he offers. Unlike those more expensive delicacies, former prisoners say, the mack is a good stand-in for the greenback because each can (or pouch) costs about $1 and few -- other than weight-lifters craving protein -- want to eat it. So inmates stash macks in lockers provided by the prison and use them to buy goods, including illicit ones such as stolen food and home-br

The more you pay, the better you feel
comy1234
by comy1234  10-7-2008
If the numbers confuse you, it basically means that the power of suggestion (which is what a placebo is; believing that taking the pill will help you) has created consumers that believe generic or lower-priced medicines are inferior to the more expensive or name-brand medicines. AKA More profits for private companies and higher barriers for those who live in poverty.
