POPSEast Bay hospice facility draws praise from loved ones, dying patients
More: Patients may spend weeks, days or only hours here while doctors and a staff of nurses and aides control their pain or agitation, social workers counsel and chaplains guide. Since it opened in 2004, more than 1,400 people have died here… Family members frequently return, often on anniversaries, to walk or sit in the yard. "The families are just so thankful. They feel so grateful. The pain is being handled. They can kind of, not enjoy the process of death, but the stress is taken off," nurse Joy Favaedi said, as two of Butkus' grandchildren played in the living room. "It's a sad place, but such a positive place." …Advocates for hospice — which focuses on comfort in the last six months of life, normally at home — view the political debate as a reflection of cultural reticence to accept death or recognize a downside to persistent life-extending measures. Places like Bruns House fill a need for acute hospice care in a homelike setting…

POPSReal-Life Fountain of Youth is Only a Matter of Time I have actually been considering this question for a while. I have no doubt that we will work out how to naturally extend our lives "qualitatively rather than quantitatively". So I realize there has to be other changes in the way we approach life and death that need to change. Tis, for me certainly a fascinating wondering and exploration. "...the question is not when, but how it will be done and (most importantly) whether incredible longevity medicines and technologies will have a net benefit to the world or create more problems than they are worth." webecoist

POPSThe Seven Most Dangerous Ingredients in Conventional Foods 3) Excitotoxins -- aspartame, monosodium glutamate and others (see below). These neurotoxic chemical additives directly harm nerve cells, over-exciting them to the point of cell death, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock. They're found in diet soda, canned soup, salad dressing, breakfast sausage and even many manufactured vegetarian foods. They're used to add flavor to over-processed, boring foods that have had the life cooked out of them.

POPSThe Holocaust Begins
. . . . .system. Patient’s rights advocates correctly note that the measure is likely to pressure seniors into making life-limiting legal decisions they might not otherwise make. In fact, that’s the point of the consultations. Erick Erickson from RedState also circulated an email message on Friday reporting an overheard conversation between an aide to Rep. Paul Tonko (D, NY) and an alleged lobbyist regarding the House health care bill. The conversation included the observation that “probably the best part of the bill is the increase in Hospice care which will solve the prolonging of life issue.” Hospice care, as opposed to hospital care, limits access to life-extending technological procedures. To claim that hospice care “solves the prolonging of life issue” suggests that a national health plan will cover hospice care but not hospital care for certain, life-threatening illnesses, with the result that patients will be required by the state to die quietly rather . . . .

POPSSection 1233 "MengeleCare": Comments Of The Day
Just remember the power of words. Mandatory counseling on "dying with dignity" every five years for seniors has nothing whatsoever to with euthanasia. And I have a bridge you'll happily buy. And here's the best comment on the thread: Having worked in multinational corporations for decades, anytime I see the words “quality reporting”, “measures”, “metrics”, etc…. that causes flags to start going up in my head. The translation for this is that whatever metrics are adopted (notice they aren’t putting that in here right now), there will be continuous improvement metrics associated with the measurements. So, if one of the metrics is how many seniors are essentially euthanized versus being placed on life-extending treatments, the continuous improvement will be there needs to be an ever higher percentage of seniors being euthanized over time. If a facility is not meeting the metrics for a specific time period, they will have their funding cut. Let's face it folks. Senior

POPSRescued fighting pit bull is now a therapy dog This big sappy moosh is all weepy now. More: In order to be certified, each dog and handler team must pass a rigorous, 15-part exam. "We try to mimic what some of the encounters might be like," said Marcia Fritzmeier, a TDI evaluator who administered Hector and Yori's test. TDI's exam tests each dog's manners, obedience, ease around people and reactions to situations such as loud noises and meeting other dogs. Fritzmeier was aware of Hector's background before his test and paid special attention to his temperament, extending some of the tests to be sure Hector would be a good therapy dog. "I could not believe the degree of excellence he passed this test with," she said. "He never stopped wagging his tail. He just enjoyed every second of it."

POPSCannes Winner "White Ribbon" Seriously Stunning Exquisite and brooding mood-piece Few film auteurs can match the consistency of Michael Haneke, and once again the Austrian filmmaker has come up trumps with an exquisite and brooding mediation on repression, tradition and the sins of the father. Shot in stunning black and white, the film chronicles a series of mysterious events in a town leading up to the outbreak of WWI. The pace is slow and thoughtful, and the film is reference to August Sander while being a respectful throwback to the German expressionists whose work would come out of the horrors the film's narrative seems to foreshadow. The hallmarks of Haneke's body of work are all there – elegiac tone, clinical editing, wincingly frank dialogue – but in many ways The White Ribbon stands alone in the canon. It is a challenging work that will polarise audiences but represents a breathtaking new wave not just in the director's career but in European cinema.

POPSNanofood safety proposal 'NOT good enough' Why? because it is DANGEROUS. It does nothing to benefit the consumer, but is a means of increasing profits by extending shelf life and appearance. There is a barrier called the Blood-Brain barrier, where the pores through osmosis will only admit a certain number of chemicals. with small molecular size, and identity. Nanofood elements throw a new invasive potential into the mix generally when there are alternatives that are much more healthy.

POPSThe Goldilocks Enigma and a self engineered universe This guy is something else. This paragraph sits in the middle of an erudite blog and the fact that it ends in an exclamation mark is out of character with the rest, he doesn't normally get excited. POPSUK faces economic crunch "Here's a plea signed by ten thousand schoolchildren, begging you to join us and save them. Here's a plea from a home for the crippled. Here's a petition sent by the ministers of two hundred different faiths-Here's an appeal from the mothers of the country. Read them." "Is this an order?" "No!" cried Mr. Thompson. "It's not an order!" Galt remained motionless, not extending his hand for the papers. "These are just plain, ordinary people, Mr. Galt," said Chick Morrison in a tone intended to project their abject humility. "They can't tell you what to do. They wouldn't know. They're merely begging you. They may be weak, helpless, blind, ignorant. But you, who are so intelligent and strong, can't you take pity on them? Can't you help them?" "By dropping my intelligence and following their blindness?"
