POPSThe Evolving AI Ecosystem He takes his theory further, all the way in to the tubes of the internet. In collaboration with Professor Tim Berners-Lee – the co-inventor of the World Wide Web – the pair have been investigating the next generation Web. “What is emerging now is a digital ecosystem,’ says Professor Shadbolt, ‘involving lots of simple systems which connect millions of complex ones – humans!” And there begins to be a certain amount of logic and a lessening of the fear I feel for the day when I am some robots whipping boy. We see such developments already in websites such as Facebook and Flickr, and programs such as Google Earth and World of Warcraft. We are being linked together, ever so slowly by a collective consciousness.

POPSFacebook Never Forgets "The Internet's anonymity, long memory and free-for-all gossip culture may yet prove a poisonous cocktail. But as our generation grows older and enters public life -- thankfully, we have some time -- we'll find ourselves in a political culture that increasingly views these "gotcha" moments in context and with an eye toward forgiveness. After all, the incriminating photo, the offensive blog post, that drunken 3 a.m. e-mail -- it could have been any of us."

POPSFacebook: The New Look of Surveillance Facebook users did not recognize how vulnerable their information was within the site's architecture. Social networking sites are rupturing the traditional conception of privacy and priming a new generation for complacency in a surveillance society. Users can complain, but the information keeps flowing. hy would people want to browse the web with "lightweight" surveillance broadcasting their pictures and supposed endorsements of products they happen to buy? And why do people continue to give pictures and personal information to a company that reserves the right to use their photos -- and their very identities -- to sell more advertising, products and market targeting in the future?

POPSE-mail is dying Great article in Slate on the decline of e-mail, primarily from younger users. I can certainly see the day when e-mail is used for work only - the place where you need to archive decisions and thought processes for future reference and communication with friends and family will tend towards these newer broadcast methods.

POPSThrowing It All Out There (facebook, myspace, etc) So far, the social networking explosion shows no sign of abating. One man in America who spotted the girl of his dreams on public transport found her again last week thanks to a very public search campaign conducted through his website www.nygirlofmydreams.com. Public displays are not always so touching. Pictures reprinted in a newspaper yesterday from YouTube and Facebook show young women glorifying the act of drinking themselves unconscious in public places. In truth, the love life and drinking culture of today's teenagers is probably nothing new, but their willingness to boast about it suggests a generation immune to embarrassment. More disturbing still are the pictures of the suspected killers in Perugia posing with machine guns and meat cleavers. Perhaps they are merely fancy dress coincidences. Interesting article, I thought.

POPSU.S. public schools' problem: too much hugging? A few days ago, a 13-year-old middle school girl was punished with detention for hugging several friends. A few Google searches later, I find that bans on hugging (along with other restrictive policies about physical contact between students or on public displays of affection) are not that uncommon. Official justifications inuclude: the need to keep order (because prolonged or multi-person hugs clog traffic in hallways between classes); teachers' and administrators' inability to determine when hugs are unwanted by their recipients; and the belief that allowing any physical contact encourages a permissive attitude that will lead to disruption and fighting. Way to raise a generation of mentally healthy kids, folks.

POPSAdam Broitman on "Facebook Gets Googley/ Google Starts to Feed" Social Media maven, Adam Broitman serves up a great post on the developing relationship between Facebook and Google. Is there love in the air or are these two Internet darlings headed for bitter divorce? Broitman says, "My feeling is that we will begin to see a lot more rivalry between these two companies."

POPSMySpace vs. Facebook - The New Digital Divide "Mashup" was a social media conference held earlier this year by YPulse.com, a popular blog for marketers targeting the Generation Y audience. One of the keynoters, Danah Boyd, briefly discussed an interesting trend regarding the different audiences that MySpace and Facebook serve. Is there a digital divide now among social networking sites? Does Facebook attract more upwardly-mobile high school students (i.e. - those that are college bound) while MySpace attracts kids who just want to hang out and have fun? Watch the keynote videos on ypulsecasts.com and voice your opinion.

POPSGOOGLE FORAYS INTO THE HEART OF SOCIAL NETWORKING Google’s annoucement comes as Facebook is growing at more than 3 percent per week, and Yahoo introduced Mash, an ‘exploratory’ social networking application that adopts Facebook-like features, with a profile page and modules, such as Flickr photo feeds, Astrology and a feed of friends updates.
