How I Stole Someone's Identity
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  Yesterday 8:24 PM
Setup: This is the case of one subject whom I'll call "Kim." She's a friend of my wife, so just from previous conversations I already knew her name, what state she was from, where she worked, and about how old she was. But that's about all I knew. She then told me which bank she used (although there are some pretty easy ways to find that out) and what her user name was. (It turns out it was fairly predictable: her first initial + last name.) Based on this information, my task was to gain access to her account.

Georgians tell of ethnic cleansing
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  Yesterday 9:36 AM
But a dozen interviews with those who fled the fighting, and a trip through seven Georgian villages just south of the fighting, indicated the killing this month was not that systematic, nor on that scale — based on what is known so far.

Also miss jolie says she likes mccain too and hasn't decided who to endorse....huh? Aren't you supposed to be somewhat enlightened, or do you not know that the african daughter you hold in every picture had parents who suffered and died because of the republican party's worldwide economic assault on africa over the last few decades since reagan? whaaaa...??????!!!! (for that matter, the thai and vietnamese sons you are photo'd with weekly too!!!? who's pictures you sell to raise money to help the poor? Their families are victims of America's right wing military incursions too. Mccain wants to continue with the idea of war for profit...the americans are over that thinking now! They have drugged our troops and lower classes into supporting their oil business atrocities for long enough. We want to save not lose our souls thank you. Now go back to making your movies about women who love to handle big guns that shoot hundreds of people to death. Ps....it might be good for your asian and afr

McCain's Mansions: The Houses That Greed Built
glennbah
by glennbah  8-18-2008
"Most working families today do not have homes that have anywhere near ten rooms. John McCain has ten houses. Many working people in America have to work two and three jobs to provide for their families and pay their car loans. John McCain hops on a private jet. Is it any wonder why McCain champions a George Bush agenda of cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy, helping oil companies turn record profits, and leaving working families to fend for themselves?

Do corrupt workers infest Blackpool council?
notareargunner
by notareargunner  8-18-2008
If you work for the deprived of Blackpool, this article comes of little surprise. The ease with which Blackpool council castigate and humiliate the elderly, the ill-educated and the vulnerable is better than legend. There is something drastically wrong within the system if vulnerable people are harangued in the way they are, while insiders hide their evil duplicity under a welter of needless accusations against innocent residents. £6000.000 tells the truth. The mass majority of council workers are conscientious and honest individuals. This situation can only arise because the average, decent employee cannot use their common sense. They are hen-pecked with stupid regulations and abeyance of political correctness. If the top hierarchy of the Finance Department were really held accountable and dismissed, the position replaced by a competent clerk on a reasonable salary, then the problem would be solved

A Phelps Phenomenon
merrie
by merrie  8-15-2008
"It's been a long time since a swimmer has been a poster child of the Olympics like this," said John Cadigan, general manager of Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center, the Mount Washington pool where Phelps and fellow Olympian Katie Hoff have trained. "It really raises the level of awareness about swimming, both for the casual lap swimmer and for kids interested in learning to swim, but it also increases interest in competitive swimming," he said. "It's something that Michael said he wanted to do four years ago, and he's certainly managed to do that." Big-brained Animals Evolve Faster
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-15-2008    1
a substantial body of evidence has confirmed that animals with larger brains, relative to their body size, have more developed skills for changing their behavior through learning and innovation, facilitating the invasion of novel environments and the use of novel resources. Despite the progress, the role of the brain in the adaptive diversification of animals has remained controversial, mostly due to the difficulties to demonstrate that big-brained animals evolve faster. Now, ecologist Daniel Sol of CREAF-Autonomous University of Barcelona and evolutionary biologist Trevor Price of the University of Chicago, provide evidence for such a role in birds in an article in The American Naturalist. Analyzing body size measures of 7,209 species (representing 75% of all avian species), they found that avian families that have experienced the greatest diversification in body size tend to be those with brains larger than expected for their body size.

Afghan Militants Butcher American Soldiers
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-15-2008    3
I didn't say anything about it here or elsewhere because a.) I didn't know what the families knew, and b.) I couldn't confirm it with anyone else. As for the soldiers being alive when captured, I still don't know with certainty whether or not that's true or just battlefield rumor. But everything else my source told me has turned out to be correct. The New York Times explains in more detail: The three were identified as Sgt. First Class Matthew L. Hilton, 37, of Livonia, Mich., of the Michigan Army National Guard; and Sgt. First Class Joseph A. McKay, 51, of Brooklyn; and Specialist Mark C. Palmateer, 38, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., both of them part of a reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition unit of the New York Army National Guard, according to a Pentagon news release. Their Afghan interpreter was 21-year-old Muhammad Fahim from Kabul, who had been working with the Americans for the last three years. His body was burned beyond recognition, his family said.

Missing Kids Come in all Colors
dulios
by dulios  8-15-2008    4
Everything from runaway brides to vacationing coeds to murdered military moms to snatched up toddlers and housewives. Be they rich, poor, rural, suburban or city, missing white women and white teens are valued. They are cherished. When violence befalls them it is “news”. It is a surprise that it happened to them—where they live. Theirs are the tragedies that must be covered. They are the victimized who must be championed. Their families are the ones deserving of justice and closure. Their families cannot be left to cope alone. They are the lost that must be found. Nancy Grace doesn’t have an aneurysm on camera when LaToya goes missing. Dan Abrams doesn’t get outraged when Marcus or Jamar vanishes. Katie Couric and Barabara Walters don’t break down in tears when kids from South Central are murdered.

Saudi Arabia bans sale of dogs, cats in capital
Jorjor
by Jorjor  8-14-2008    1
This reminds me of the old joke, "Why do Baptists disapprove of sex? It could lead to dancing." This is an example of religious governance leading to interference in what should be totally secular areas of life. Of course we in the west pamper and coddle our pets, and often react with revulsion at the notion that there are places in the world where dogs are food animals. It's slightly more understandable in the case of dogs, because Islam considers them unclean, but that doesn't explain the ban on cats as well. The story about the Chinese emperor who cut the sleeve from a priceless robe rather than disturb his sleeping kitten has also been told about Mohammed. The article also fails to explain why the law applies only to men. If they realized that by allowing women to own pets, they have a privelege men don't, the entire fabric of Saudi society could come unraveled.

Frozen Katrina
spirithiker
by spirithiker  8-14-2008
People will freeze to death this winter while republicans ignore assistance in favor of voting for offshore oil drilling. Last year LIHEAP was only able to assist 16% of eligible recipients forcing the poor to choose between food, medicine or heating fuel. And Bush proposed cutting the aid by $379 million. The total annual funding for this program amounts to less than what the U.S. spends every week in Iraq. They way we treat our disadvantaged, poor and homeless is atrocious.
