POPSPot Paradise "Jacqueline Patterson, 31, uses marijuana to treat her cerebral palsy and a severe stutter. She fears she would be booted from the program if she tried to grow dope at home or buy it from street dealers. The upshot, critics say, is that a law crafted to help sick people has morphed into a lucrative trade, one in which rural farms are supplying urban dispensaries that cater to mostly recreational users armed with doctors' recommendation"

POPS Meat creates half of all greenhouse gases People are cutting down rain forests to make grazing land for cattle, or to grow soya beans for cattle to eat. Now the numbers of methane emitting livestock are orders of magnitude greater than they were only 50 years ago.

POPSNow you know. It's no fun to think about, but it's better that we know and act upon this knowledge.

POPSBill and Melinda Gates pledge 120 million to boost African, Indian farmers Oh noez. Corporate America, Bill Gates, is dropping 120 million to help Africa and India. So liberals, this must horrify you right? Because corporations are "evil" in your nightmares or did you confuse it with an episode of "Fringe". Moan for me libs. Moan about America and whine because Americans, Bill and Melinda Gates, just blew your mind. Where's that fatty Michael Moore-on anyway? Probably sitting in Krispy Kreme or Dominoes Pizza stuffing his fat face. I know this news isn't as important as the Christians eating fried chicken at the Baptist Church, but who could compete with a horror show like that. Waaaaahhhhhh corporations......waaaaahhhhhh Christians........wahhhhhhh Rush Limbaugh.......waaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Boohoo. Cry me a river.

POPSIsrael Says UN War Crimes Investigation a Distraction Hunting down the Nazis, though, wasn't a "distraction." The holocaust in Gaza deserves equal attention. Over one and a half million people are being starved to death in front of the eyes of the world in the Gaza strip, by the total and ruthless Israeli blockade, destruction of infrastructure, restrictions on employment, farming, fishing and repair of homes. The U.N. report says this blockade must be ended. It is not a "distraction." It would be stopping a crime against humanity.

POPSAmazing Rice Terraces Upon seeing these stunning images of rice terraces in Southeast Asia and China, one could think that rice is actually only the byproduct of a bigger project: landscape art. The technique of rice farming and the work today is done pretty much the way it was millennia ago – one reason why most of the amazing rice terraces are still intact. Rice farming is also backbreaking work, as most of the narrow paddies can only be farmed by hand, like they were millennia ago. No wonder then that the younger generation is more drawn to jobs in the hospitality industry, or moves away...

POPSGreenback Acres - Growing the Welfare Crop The payments now account for nearly half of the nation's expanding agricultural subsidy system, a complex web that has little basis in fairness or efficiency. What began in the 1930s as a limited safety net for working farmers has swollen into a far-flung infrastructure of entitlements that has cost $172 billion over the past decade. In 2005 alone, when pretax farm profits were at a near-record $72 billion, the federal government handed out more than $25 billion in aid, almost 50 percent more than the amount it pays to families receiving welfare.

POPSSocialized Farming In rural America, the LDP is a topic at backyard barbecues and local diners along with the high school football team and the weather. Despite its name, it is neither a loan nor, in many cases, payment for a deficiency. It is just cash paid to farmers when market prices dip below the government-set minimum, or floor, if only for a single day. ad_icon The LDP has become so ingrained in farmland finances that farmers sometimes wish for market prices to drop so they can capture a larger subsidy. "Most smart farmers are cashing in on it," said Bruce A. Babcock, director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State University. "It shows me that farmers are being overcompensated."

POPSModern Epic Tales: Unintended Consequence
Kill 300,000 pigs in Egypt used to help eat garbage and kept in "herds" generally fewer than ten pigs to "control" swine flu and what do you get? The good possibility of some other disease breaking out because of piling up garbage and an ensuing growth in rodent and fly populations. Swine flu developed within industrially grown herds of thousands of pigs in unsanitary conditions, which is a formula for creating the chance of a disease breakout. The unintended consequence of the use of pigs kept in small numbers by families who collected and recycled garbage for income? A safer Cairo? Why'd they really do it? They have had 30+ deaths from avian flu arising from "farming" too many chickens in unsanitary conditions for the world poultry market. Had to look good at something but not threaten the income of poultry traders. Add to this that the garbage pickers are minority Coptic Christians and the government probably thought no one would care. But now the garbage is piling up

POPSMr. President, You Had A Beer-Summit, California Farmers Need A Water Summit
DAN HARRIS: In California, the problem is not too much wet weather, but not enough of it. A drought combined with the bad economy have delivered a one-two punch to the Central Valley, where much of the nation's food is grown. 100,000 acres went unplanted last year, and this year, it could be 750,000 acres. Economists say that will mean $1.5 billion in lost income and the elimination of 40,000 jobs. Lisa Fletcher is in California tonight. LISA FLETCHER: In just a glance, you know something is very wrong. PETE RAMIREZ, CROP DUSTER: It's like a desert. A couple of years ago, it was all farmland and everybody had a job. THEDA LAWRENCE, MENDOTA: What are the people gonna do? How are they gonna eat whenever there's no farming? FLETCHER: A quarter of the nation's fruits and vegetables are grown here in California's Central Valley. But the farmers here have been hit with two crises at the same time. They're in their third year of severe drought. And now, they must also cope . . .

POPSU.N.: Evidence of Gaza War Crimes Other articles mention deliberate bulldozing of food sources, livestock, destruction of sewer and water plants, etc. Obviously, Israel accused the head judge, Goldstone, of bias. An anti-Semitic Jew? -- well, facts not as important in politics as much as consistent smear. I learned that Israel was preventing people in Gaza from farming and fishing. That pretty much makes it clear to me that Israel's policies = genocide, deliberately starving over a million and a half people to death, while they are imprisoned by a blockade. It was nice to see the U.N. recommend this blockade be lifted. It seems some Palestinians may have also committed war crimes, shooting rockets that may have hit civilians....there were 3 Israeli civilians killed in the latest conflict. Humm....but maybe they weren't given a chance to say they "didn't mean it." --- since U.S. (and NATO) kill dozens and dozens of civilians every week, but then they say "they didn't mean it."
