White Privilege
monstersmom
by monstersmom  9-16-2008
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested." White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous

Goldwater Quotes

by sahara  8-3-2008    3
“Where is the politician who has not promised to fight to the death for lower taxes- and who has not proceeded to vote for the very spending projects that make tax cuts impossible?" “It's political Daddyism and it's as old as demagogues and despotism.” “The rights that we have under the Constitution covers anything we want to do, as long as its not harmful. I can't see any way in the world that being a gay can cause damage to somebody else,” If I had inherited the mess that Johnson got into, I would have said to North Vietnam, by dropping leaflets out of B-52s, 'You quit the war in three days or the next time these babies come over there going to drop some big bombs on you.' And I'd make a swamp out of North Vietnam ... I'd rather kill a hell of a lot of North Vietnamese than one American and we've lost enough of them,”

From Across the Pond - Step forward George Bush

by cptenaud  6-11-2008    5
From Blog: And who will be joining in the call: leading voices in the worlds of the arts and politics, including the novelist Iain Banks, the artist David Gentleman and the human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger, have now joined forces to call for Mr Bush to face a war crimes trial in the Hague. Wonder how the Brits will handle the security and where they will force their citizens to assemble. Labour Against the War Anti-war protest planned for Bush visit to London Stop the War Coalition (STWC) described Bush as a "war criminal" and said the protest will be held outside the British parliament on June 15. And a Happy Fathers Day jr. bush, by the way, why isn't your new son-in-law in a military uniform!

Virginity in Egypt - Double Standards and Hypocrisy
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  5-22-2008    2
Operations to restore a woman's virginity are prohibited in Egypt, but are often performed all the same. They reflect a rejection of old concepts of morality which equate virtue with an intact hymen. If a young woman's hymen is intact, no one is allowed to imply that she is not behaving according to the moral values of society. Often this assessment is incorrect, asthese values force girls to undergo operations which restore the torn hymen. They feel obligated to protect the women in their family and to restrict their freedom. Often this means that girls are circumcised as soon as they reach puberty in an attempt to nip the emergence of sexual desire in the bud. stresses the importance of a public discussion of what constitutes the values "honor" and "virginity".

How al Qaeda Will Perish
merrie
by merrie  3-25-2008
Al-Sahab, media arm of al Qaeda urgent call for recruits. "We call on the fathers and mothers not to become a barrier between their children and paradise." No less significant is that the rejection of al Qaeda is not a liberal phenomenon, in the sense that it represents a more tolerant mindset or a better opinion of the U.S. On the contrary, this is a revolt of the elders, whether among the tribal chiefs of Anbar province or Islamist godfathers like Sayyed Imam. They have seen through (or punctured) the al Qaeda mythology of standing for an older, supposedly truer form of Islam. Rather, they have come to know al Qaeda as fundamentally a radical movement -- the antithesis of the traditional social order represented by the local sovereign, the religious establishment, the head of the clan and, not least, the father who expects to know the whereabouts of his children. It would be a delightful irony if militant Islam were ultimately undone by a conservative style reaction.

School Board to Pay in Jesus Prayer Suit
schreibe
by schreibe  3-20-2008    3
I live in a small town in North Florida, and I can't believe the "holding hands", and prayer meetings that are conducted on public school grounds and in public meetings. I think it is an infringement on the rights of people of other faiths to have to endure this kind of over-the-line challenge to the Founding Fathers insistance on the separation of church and state. My God!, ....what is more important than for a kid to be able to go to school without feeling like he is not a part of the community because he is of a different faith! Or, maybe even, ...heaven forbid.....not of any faith at all! It's time for a change!,....and a return to the faith of our Fathers in our inherent God given right to be who we are! I'm fed up with it all!

Yesterday’s Baggage
merrie
by merrie  3-20-2008
By “investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations.” The path for blacks, Obama insists, requires “binding our particular grievances — for better health care, and better schools, and better jobs — to the larger aspirations of all Americans — the white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man who’s been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family.” There’s not much that is actually new here. This was largely a restatement of Jeremiah Wright’s indictment of America, delivered in University of Chicago parlance instead of South Side Chicago diatribe. The old baggage has been replaced with shinier suitcases, but the contents are the same as ever. Black America’s problems can be solved by spending more money on the same old Great Society programs

Fred Thompson in Glimpses
davboz
by davboz   1-19-2008    5
Olbermann embarrasses the news business with his complete un-professionalism. "MessNBC" with their intentional audio inclusion of the unseen production crew, saw it acceptable to loudly razz an inspiring speech by Fred Thompson from So.Carolina early Saturday evening. K.O.along with Chris Matthews, come off like a pair of drop-outs sharing a 40 oz.'er and a joint - guys like Joe Scarborough have to be completely embarrassed having to appear with "The Most Disgusting News Fraud IN THE W-O-R-L-D! ! !" Matthews, having been relegated to sidekick to squinty-eyed Keith, asks the most absurd questions of each analyst and reporter that they don't even try to answer, wondering if he's actually even serious or not. There's nothing more disgusting than taking personalities like those two, making them feel self-important, and fueling that with alcohol. They are clearly drunk, resulting in a vulgar display of adolescent political analysis and childish disrespect for those that are the adult

Changing abortion's pronoun
Pooge
by Pooge  1-7-2008
I've often felt that the needs and rights of men are overlooked when it comes to abortion. And that the whole "my body, my choice" justification by women is lame and selfish. However, I'm still pro-choice. I have my own non-selfish justifications for abortion. That being said... If these men feel some sense of comfort from coming together and acknowledging their pain, then that's what they should do. But recognizing men as "victims" to abortion? And asking them to think of themselves as fathers and name the children their partners aborted... and ask them for forgiveness? That's going to far. Doesn't sound healthy to me. I know a woman who runs a post-abortion group for women that employs that same method of "recovery". I think it likely contributes more to the need of recovery than helps anyone. And this new men's movement is already being politicized -- encouraging men to tell their stories of post-abortion trauma in hopes of tugging at the heart strings of American vot

There really is no one-size fits all solution here. A child needs a loving, healthy atmosphere to grow up in. I know enough people who grew up in spite of their fathers presence, equally those who grew up in spite of their mothers. Either way, I don't believe banning people from raising children because of their sexuality is right.

Quotes of the Founding Fathers
willhelm
by willhelm  10-11-2007
"Those rights, then, which God and nature have established, and are therefore called natural rights, such as are life and liberty, need not the aid of human laws to be more effectually invested in every man than they are; neither do they receive any additional strength when declared by the municipal laws to be inviolable. On the contrary, no human legislation has power to abridge or destroy them, unless the owner shall himself commit some act that amounts to a forfeiture." - William Blackstone" The fabric of American empire ought to rest on the solid basis of the consent of the people. The streams of national power ought to flow immediately from that pure, original fountain of all legislative authority." - Alexander Hamilton "The way to have good and safe government is not to trust it all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly the functions he is competent . - Thomas Jefferson

28 Fundemental Beliefs of the American Founding Fathers

Principle 11 - The majority of the people may alter or abolish a government which has become tyrannical. Principle 12 - The United States of America shall be a republic. Principle 13 - A Constitution should protect the people from the frailties of their rulers. Principle 14 - Life and liberty are secure only so long as the rights of property are secure . Principle 15 - The highest level of prosperity occurs when there is a free-market economy and a minimum of government regulations. Principle 16 - The government should be separated into three branches . Principle 17 - A system of checks and balances should be adopted to prevent the abuse of power by the different branches of government. Principle 18 - The unalienable rights of the people are most likely to be preserved if the principles of government are set forth in a written Constitution.
