POPSWierd trees They are like mushrooms. This proves a statement that we are still discovering new species every day

POPSScientists rally to keep out 'supercats' Domestic cats in Australia kill enough of the fauna, which has evolved with little ground level threat. These, bred as killers, will decimate the wildlife (and the local cats too, I suppose. Not quite a silver lining).

POPSSea Stars of Cold Oceanic Waters Alaska and the Aleutian Island Chain is the richest region in the world for Sea Stars with well over one hundred named species in 45+ genera with at least another 25 recently discovered species presently under description. A sampling of this rich and amazingly colorful fauna is presented herein.

POPSAustralia gets access to underwater bounty There seem to be the implication that we can 'own' an environment. While there is constant talk of conservation, it never seems to get in the way of a good profit. The world is a boat. and we are just passengers, not owners. We should feel obliged to leave it in a fit state for travelers on the next leg of the journey. I suppose it was a choice between oil rigs, and bottom trawlers. The black smoker' is the spout from a seabed hydrothermal vent. At the sea floor, due to the pressure, water is still liquid at 400deg C, and is as acidic as vinegar.

POPSBackyard biodiversity: Make Space for Nature The 2004 Make Space for Nature campaign in Sheffield England inspired people across the nation to enhance their gardens with wildlife-friendly measures. Almost 100,000 pledges were made during the campaign to put out nest boxes, dig ponds, plant trees, and we can only assume this was the tip of the iceberg. Many viewers were already doing all these things. Many more might not have pledged, but might have thought twice before mowing their lawns or going out to annihilate their local slug populations after watching the series.

POPSAndrew Maynard’s Suburb Eating Robot As part of Critical Visions 08, a conference organized by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in Sydney, Andrew Maynard and six other young up-and-coming architects presented a vision of what the future holds for architects and designers, and the challenges that we will have to face. The visions proposed everything from clearing large swaths of Sydney for creating green spaces, to radically conceptualizing what a city would look like if it only had public transportation, and all points were no more than 30 minutes away from each other.

POPSWildlife of Madagascar - pics 2 Avahi occidentalis A western woolly lemur. Scientists have used specially developed software to create detailed maps of how species are distributed on the island down to a per kilometre level 3 Avahi laniger An eastern woolly lemur. Data was collected on the exact locations of more than 2,300 Malagasy species from six major groups: lemurs, butterflies, frogs, geckos, ants and plants 4 Daubentonia madagascariensis An aye-aye. The world's largest nocturnal primate is found only in Madagascar and well known for its unique method of finding food: it taps on trees to find grubs, then gnaws holes in the wood and inserts its elongated middle finger to pull the grubs out 5 The Indri indri, one of the largest lemurs. The scientists say the Madagascar model could be used for other biodiversity hot spots around the world by helping scientists to predict where species might go for refuge when habitats are endangered by climate change

POPSPlant diversity being wrecked in China The insatiable appetite for raw materials sees China fast becoming the World's biggest vandal. China is on a quest to feed its industry at a huge cost to our natural environment. This can't persist!

POPSThe Devils Marbles Scattered across a wide, shallow valley, these granite boulders are precariously balanced on top of one another. This environment provides shelter for much of the wildlife and fauna found across the arid centre of Australia. Sacred to the the traditional owners of the area, the Warumungu, who believe the boulders are the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent. A 15 min. self guided walk is accessible from the western side of the road (day use area) and there is a network of walking tracks for you to find some solitude in this special place.
