US, Poland Sign Missile Deal
Wisco
by Wisco  Today 12:50 PM
A few points to consider here: 1. This is being put across as a response to the Russo-Georgian crisis, but dumbass moves like this are actually one of the causes . 2. It's a BS system that doesn't work about 99% of the time. 3. Russia's statement that it would be the target of a nuke attack is a statement of fact, not a threat. If Russia ever feels the need to launch an attack on anyone, they'd take out these missile defense systems first, as ineffective as they are. Poland is foolishly painting a big bullseye on their back.

Russia: Poland risks attack because of US missiles
jatfla
by jatfla  8-15-2008    4
Whoa! That's some plain-talkin' threats. For me, this reveals how much more serious the goings-on in Georgia really are to all of eastern Europe and to us/US. Poland has been threatened by Russia for quite some time; the missile shield is another point for the Russian authorities.

Back to the Future: It's the Cold War Again
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  8-15-2008    1
No one really believes that the US is deploying these missile interceptor systems near Russia as a deterrent against terrorists or "rogue" nations. They are intended for Russia and because Russia's capacity to produce nuclear missiles is substantial, the factory orders in the US for these systems can be ongoing for some time. Can you hear the cash register ring? The tragedy is that it is is reigniting the Cold War all over again with all its tensions and potential for nuclear weapon exchanges and, of course, massive profits for military industries who will "need" to incessantly develop countermeasures to countermeasures.

President Saakashvili, "We are Giving Final Adios to the Soviet Union”
merrie
by merrie  8-14-2008
It has indicated that it feels Mr Saakashvili, whom it accuses of war crimes, should resign, and that it is disinclined to negotiate directly with him. ” Saakashvili, however, has declined to play the loser. Speaking before flag-waving crowds the Georgian President announced that his country, in consultation with Parliament, had decided to leave the Commonwealth of Independent States and had urged the Ukraine to do the same. CNN quoted him as saying, “we are giving final adios to the Soviet Union.” A senior Russian military commander said the halt in the Russian advance into Georgia did not mean all operations would end.”If we have received the order to ceasefire, this does not mean that we have stopped all actions, including reconnaissance,” General Anatoly Nogovitsyn said. … Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday ordered a halt to the military offensive against Georgia saying it had been punished but could be hit again. …

Political Correctness Is Going Overbaord
cmstratton
by cmstratton  8-13-2008
People in this country have gotten way too focused on being politically correct. It seems like everyone is on the lookout for something someone has done that could potentially be taken as insensitive of a particular individual or group. I have a sister who is mentally retarded and am gay so the word "retard" and dealing with stereotypes is nothing new to me. I have to say, taking offense to something like this should completely revolve around context. If I were out with my sister and someone started pointing, laughing, and calling her a retard, OBVIOUSLY I'd have a problem with it. Same as if someone came up to me and started pointing, calling me a faggot. A satirical movie or a show like Will and Grace displaying stereotypes is nothing to get offended about. It's a movie. If you think it perpetuates stereotypes, you're also probably someone who feels movies and TV should be educating your children on life. We need to get over ourselves and not be so uptight about these t

Russia Actually Exists
ZenBonobo
by ZenBonobo  8-12-2008
This article proposes ways to counter Russia on her home ground. There are other ways but this is one. The recent Georgian events were inspired by a NeoCon worldview that an audacious event precipitated by a client state just might replicate David with his sling. In this case . . .NOT! There was and remains too much to lo lose. There are pipeline and energy schemes at stake and the loss of prestige and honor by the US in its inability to cover the losses of such a small but vital little merde pile at the far end of the Black Sea. What were they thinking.

Finding A Personality
debbyski
by debbyski  8-12-2008    6
"In the midst of all this — the comebacks, the wisecracks, the flapping mouth — I had a dim idea of what I was doing. I wanted to be someone, a recognizable personality, a full-blooded, memorable human being, and not just a cancer patient. I had already lost the person I used to be, that healthy, energetic 45-year-old woman. I wasn’t capable of losing more. “A critical illness is like a great permission, an authorization or absolving. It’s all right for a threatened man to be romantic, even crazy, if he feels like it. All your life you think you have to hold back your craziness, but when you’re sick you can let it go in all its garish colors.” YES!!!!!!!!!

Obama Pledges 'Total Equality' for Same-Sex Families

So the false 'messiah' wants to decree what God (whether Jesus, Allah, or Yahweh) has forbidden. If this man is elected President, his mantra of "Change" will bring about the complete bankruptcy and demise of America and all it's stood for for over 200 yrs.

You May Be A Racist If You...........
merrie
by merrie  8-6-2008    2
If you're appalled that Obama voted against treating infants born after an abortion attempt the same medically as other infants born alive you... If you were proud of your country even before Obama's candidacy you If you oppose racial preferences in employment, school admissions and contracting you... If you think "we are the change we've been waiting for" is a line from a Monty Python skit you... If your grandmother isn't a "typical white person" you... If you're not sure invading Pakistan is a particularly good idea—what with their nuclear weapons and all— you... The tendency of Obama supporters to see racist impulses behind every criticism of their candidate has evolved into absurdity. Now even the first black president feels compelled to declare he's not a racist. By this measure, nearly every American is at risk of being branded a racist at some point in the campaign. To assess whether you're at risk just consult the list below ( apologies to Jeff Foxworthy

Rolling Blackouts
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-5-2008
Let’s emulate California? First, California didn’t cut their demand; they only kept it from increasing. Next, people may remember how well California’s energy policy worked over the last two decades. The aging infrastructure, price mandates, and botched privatization led the state into years of rolling blackouts, where utilities simply cut off supply in order to compensate for an inability to meet demand. Governor Gray Davis got recalled from office over the issue, but the blackouts continued for years afterward. And again, California never did reduce demand, not even by 5%, let alone 15%. I’m not sure Californians would feel like a great example of an energy policy that worked, and I doubt the rest of the nation feels differently. And Obama once again repeated his pledge to get a million more plug-hybrids (at 150 mpg!) on the road while cutting electrical demand, a neat trick that Obama still hasn’t explained.

You're Not Getting Your Old Dog Back
cmstratton
by cmstratton  8-5-2008
This story highlights what I think is one of the more common misconceptions about cloning. It sounds like the woman in this article feels like she's getting her old dog Booger back. While it's true she's getting an exact genetic replica of Booger, he could end up being very different than the original. Much of Boogers personality and capabilities were the result not only of his genetic make-up, but of his life experience. There's no way to exactly duplicate that experience, so it's very likely the cloned Boogers will be somewhat if not very different than the original. This could be true for some of his physical characteristics as well, as some of them are influenced by life's experiences. While I believe cloning can hold great promise, people need to realize it can't be used to bring a dead loved one back to life.
