POPSVice In Go-Go Boots? "The legacy of Geraldine Ferraro was supposed to be that no one would ever go on a blind date with history again. But that crazy maverick and gambler McCain does it, and conservatives and evangelicals rally around him in admiration of his refreshingly cynical choice of Sarah, an evangelical Protestant and anti-abortion crusader who became a hero when she decided to have her baby, who has Down syndrome, and when she urged schools to debate creationism as well as that stuffy old evolution thing."

POPSMcCain's Gamble On a Woman Create Headache For Obama As governor of Alaska she is about as far removed from Washington as it is possible to be. The McCain campaign intends to contrast that with the inside-Washington double-ticket of Obama and Biden. Perhaps most impressively, in just a year and a half in office in Alaska she has established a reputation as a tough reformer. She is also a staunch advocate of expanding domestic drilling for oil, popular among oil-rich Alaska and among Americans as a whole. At her first appearance on the stump yesterday alongside her running-mate, she seemed assured and steady. But her selection adds a startling new uncertainty into the presidential race, a risky gamble for the Republicans but a complicating headache for the Democrats. THROUGHOUT their long primary campaign this year, Democrats made much of the fact that their progressive party was presenting a historic choice to the nation; the first black man or woman in the Oval Office.

POPSThe Scary Hatred That Exists They can tell us all they want that bigotry is no longer a problem and that black people have just a good a chance in this county as anyone else, but a picture is worth a 1000 words. This must be what Geraldine Ferraro meant when she said that Obama only got where he was because he was black.

POPSOne Bite for Me, One Giant Leap for the Chocolate Box
No one was going to obstruct the destiny of this little chocolate delight: my mouth. While it was shaped, the nut placed inside had my name on it, and so forth, untill it reached my home where I picked it out from the rest of the golden sun-balls which are probably written for members of the family, unless I get to them first that is. By the time I had reflected over this little chocolate’s epic journey, it had disappeared from my hand and it was all over really- one of the best chocolate experiences to data where I ate and simultaneously marvelled at a gift from God that had my name on it. I must admit I was tempted to go for another bite and revisit the journey in more detail, but perhaps tomorrow. I hate to over-indulge and hey, if my name is written on one of them (or even all of them), then it’s surely destined to be mine. It’s just a matter of mouth-watering time. *from the source I was in Belgium last summer, redefined chocolate for me. Gained 2 kg too =/

POPSRace Chasm: Where race matters in politics Click to see the whole graph! Excellent demographic analysis traces Obama wins in states that are mostly white and states that are mostly black. But in the middle - the "race chasm" are the states that are 6 to 17% black, with a long history of racial tension, but not enough black votes to overcome subtle campaigning aimed at racial fear and anger (eg, Ferraro's tweaking of the affirmative action animus, Bill's likening to Jesse Jackson, Hillary's spotlight on Jeremiah Wright. The "firewall" ? Attempting to build on anti-black resentment in states that have histories of racial tension but not enough black votes to overcome it. You don't have to look far to see how effective these strategies have been at raising the fear and anger of working-class white people. Read the whole piece for many more details, and click to see the entire graph.

POPSPlaying By Obama's Rules To observe Democrats this week, savaging one of their heroines, is to understand why the party is unready to rule. This week, after being subjected for 48 hours to accusations of divisiveness by Barack Obama, and racism by his agents and auxiliaries in the media, Ferraro resigned from Clinton's campaign. What had she said to send the Obamaites into paroxysms of rage? Obama's agents suggest that Ferraro deliberately injected race into the campaign. But this, too, is ridiculous. Her quote came in an interview with the Daily Breeze of Torrance, Calif., not "Meet the Press." The attack on Ferraro comes out of a conscious strategy of the Obama campaign -- to seek immunity from attack by smearing any and all attackers as having racist motives. When Bill Clinton dismissed Obama's claim to have been consistently antiwar as a "fairy tale," and twinned Obama's victory in South Carolina with Jesse Jackson's, his statements were described as tinged with racism.

POPSOlberman video to Clinton: "That way, madness lies" Is this video a turning point? "You are campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you, the Republican." "Your advisors are killing your opportunity to become President; they are killing any Democrat's opportunity to become President."

POPSWill Hillary Campaign dismiss Staffer over Racially Charged Remarks?
More: Obama campaign manager David Axelrod added the comment was "part of an insidious pattern that needs to be addressed" within the Clinton campaign, pointing to Clinton's remark to 60 Minutes that rumors Obama is a Muslim aren't true, "as far as I know," she said. "When you wink and nod at offensive statements, you're really sending a signal to your supporters that anything goes," Axelrod said, arguing Clinton is seen as a "divisive and polarizing force." Obama chided Clinton for Ferraro's comment to a local Pennsylvania newspaper. "I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party," Obama told Pennsylvania's Allentown Morning Call newspaper. "They are divisive. I think anybody who understands the history of this country knows they are patently absurd. And I would expect that the same way those comments don't have a place in my campaign they shouldn't have a place in Senator Clinton's either."

POPSAlcee Hastings seeks Intelligence chair I'm not sure about the facts of Hastings bribery case, but this would create a bad image for the Democrats. It could happen, too. Her support of Murtha for majority leader indicates that Pelosi values loyalty more than the perception of integrity.
