Oceans running low on oxygen
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-14-2008    1
These dead zones occur when fertilizer runoff dumps excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, into coastal waters, providing food for algae. When these microscopic plants die and sink to the ocean bottom, bacteria feed on them and subsequently consume all the oxygen dissolved in the water. This leaves fish and other bottom-dwelling sea creatures without enough oxygen to survive, causing mass die-offs and displacements. Typically, the researchers noted, these events aren't noticed until they threaten valuable fish stocks.

buffalo does nothing to reduce carbon footprint
rachaelkeriwilliams
by rachaelkeriwilliams  8-13-2008
A shame. There is still a press release about mayor Brown signing this agreement after he took office, but we still have no action plan in place. The city is concerned about attracting green business, but there has been little effort to create sweeping changes that are necessary to develop the type of community these sought-after businesses would like to move into. Buffalo is not conducive for green business the way it is right now, because there is just too much work to be done. We have no green infrastructure. Hardly any workers skilled in green jobs, construction, too few citizens who have any idea what it is to live sustainably— we hardly recycle, our rainwater still blends with our shit, and permeable pavement is practically illegal in the hippest neighborhood we have.

Pelosi Wants to Save the Planet?
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-2-2008
Democrats want no oil from the American OCS or ANWR. But of course they do want more oil. From OPEC. From where Americans don't vote. From places Democratic legislators can't see. On May 13 Sen. Chuck Schumer -- deeply committed to saving just those pieces of the planet that might have huge reserves of American oil -- demanded that the Saudis increase production by a million barrels a day. It doesn't occur to him that by eschewing the slightest disturbance of the mating habits of the Arctic caribou, he is calling for the further exploitation of the pristine deserts of Arabia. In the name of the planet, mind you. The desire to swing a cluebat at these twits is strong....

Offsetting carbon offsets
willhelm
by willhelm  7-31-2008
Aren't you pissed off? I have an idea. This would be a company that receives payments to support the usage of fossil fuels to offset the ridiculous carbon offset scams that are fraudulently bilking morons out of their money. Here is how it would work. If your carbon footprint is lower than Al Gore's, then you pay carbon offset offsets to projects that increase the use of fossil fuels for the purpose of increasing your carbon footprint to equal that of Al Gore's. Is this NOT BRILLIANT? And get this, it is not a scam. It is helping to defeat a scam and render the practice of scammers useless.

Are you confused about carbon footprint, carbon trading and carbon accounting? It is not surprising. The rules for Carbon Trading are still being set up and there are so many grey areas. The best option if you are not one of the major emitters with immediate trading requirements is to work out how to reduce your carbon footprint and you will find that this saves you money as you reduce the waste.

The piece goes on: "The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand," said Obama, in an address beamed live on US and German television channels and to viewers around the world. "The walls between races and tribes; natives and immigrants; Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down," Obama said, drawing cheers and applause. Obama's website has the full speech.

NASA: 70% of climate change due to Pacific oscillations, not CO2
n2sooners
by n2sooners  7-23-2008    3
What this means is no matter how much you change your CO2 footprint, how much you try to be CO2 green, no matter how much liberal governments tax you - you cannot save the planet from its natural cycles. Say they reduced the CO2 25%. Say the CO2 is the driver for the remaining 30% of Global Warming (which it cannot be, but let’s just be only half as ridiculous as the IPCC), then all that effort would only impact 7.5% of the forces driving the global climate. The other 92.5% would roll on, impervious to the effort. And since CO2 is not 100% of the remaining 30% of the equation (more like 10%), a more realistic expectation is that all the suffering that would go into dropping CO2 levels by 25% would result in a less than 1% change in the forces driving our climate.
