POPSJudge Considering Arguments To Block Troopergate probe Wouldn’t legislators who call for an investigation naturally believe something was amiss? Clarkson had hoped to call witnesses. The judge said no. Next to Clarkson sat Scott Hoyt – a Dallas lawyer with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher here on behalf of the Liberty Legal Institute. One point of debate: Did the Senate Judiciary Committee have the proper authority to issue the subpoenas? Maassen said it doesn’t matter whether the Legislature acts through a council or a committee – it still has the same broad powers of investigation. Thomas Van Flein, the lawyer representing Palin her husband Todd, watched from the gallery, along with Sen. Fred Dyson, Rep. John Coghill. Rep. Bob Lynn and Rep. Les Gara.

POPS How A Catholic Priest Gave Us The Primeval Atom Theory
Returning to Belgium in 1925, where he worked at the Catholic University of Leuven as a part-time lecturer, his big break came two years later in 1927 when he proposed his theory of an expanding Universe to explain the movement of the galaxies, published in the Annals of the Scientific Society of Brussels. Lemaitre was still pretty hazy about how the process of expansion could have begun. Like many scientists, he was still committed to the idea of a static Universe of unchanging size... Einstein, though interested, was largely dismissive, telling Lemaitre that, "Your calculations are good, but your physics is terrible". Einstein was also a little suspicious of the religious implications of these ideas. He declined to describe himself as an atheist (or a theist, or a pantheist) and liked to use the vocabulary of religion, most famously in his misguided rejection of much of quantum physics, "God does not play dice!" British physicist, Fred Hoyle coined the Big Bang term

POPSThe crisis explained (quickly & w/ humour!!) "....Hank Paulson and his golfing buddies go to the track and lose the rent money playing the ponies, we should pay up?" Corrente - "UPDATE If you call Speaker Pelosi’s office at (202) 225-0100, a human answers! That’s what I just did at 11:17 PM EDT. So, if you want to share your views on the bailout, be polite!"

POPSThree Senators Opened The Door For Iraq Oil Contracts For Red China but the resulting media hooraw in Iraq led to the cancellation of the contracts, and helps to explain why Iraq is doing oil deals instead with China. Senators Schumer, McCaskill, and Kerry claimed: “It is our fear that this action by the Iraqi government could further deepen political tensions in Iraq and put our service members in even great danger.” For that reason, presumably, Schumer went so far as to ask the senior vice president of Exxon “if his company would agree to wait until the GOI produced a fair, equitable, and transparent hydrocarbon revenue sharing law before it signed any long-term agreement with the GOI.” Exxon naturally refused, but Schumer managed to get the deal killed anyway.

POPS McCain and Palin Hit Northern Virginia Thompson said (according to my notes), "The Washington insiders say, 'we don't know her. She hasn't been on the Sunday shows. She hasn't been on the cover of Time magazine.' Well, whose fault is that? She ain't been hidin' from anybody! ... They've sent a planeload of folks to Alaska to look into her background. I think they ought to send a planeload of people to Chicago for a few days - they've had two years to do it!" By the way, while the crowd was enthralled by Palin, it's worth noting that the crowd did start chanting "John Mc-Cain! John Mc-Cain!" at various points, and not just when he was speaking. So it's not like he's the forgotten man in his own campaign.

POPSAfghana-What-Now? I came across this after writing a morning post about how little talk there was about the future at the RNC last night. Matt Yglesias makes an interesting observation regarding another ignored issue:

POPSFred Thompson Slams Media Bias Against Palin as 'Abysmal' Fred Thompson slams MSM on Palin coverage Fred Thompson will forcefully defend the selection of Sarah Palin tonight in a speech Republicans are characterizing as “red meat.” He will argue that the feeding frenzy over Palin’s is the result of “panic” from the Democrat-friendly mainstream media. “What a breath of fresh air Governor Sarah Palin is. She is from a small town, with small town values, but that’s not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family. Let’s be clear, the selection of Governor Palin has the other side and their friends in the media in a state of panic. She is a courageous, successful, reformer, who is not afraid to take on the establishment.” http://www.savethegop.com/2008/09/02/fred-to-slam-msm-on-palin-coverage/

POPSFred Thompson Speaks on Service to Our Country She is from a small town, with small town values, but that's not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family. Some Washington pundits and media big shots are in a frenzy over the selection of a woman who has actually governed rather than just talked a good game on the Sunday talk shows and hit the Washington cocktail circuit. Well, give me a tough Alaskan governor who has taken on the political establishment in the largest state in the union -- and won -- over the beltway business-as-usual crowd any day of the week. Let's be clear ... the selection of Gov. Palin has the other side and their friends in the media in a state of panic. She is a courageous, successful, reformer, who is not afraid to take on the establishment. Sound like anyone else we know? She has run a municipality and she has run a state. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/02/thompson.transcript/index.html Excerpt of Fred Thompson below:

POPSFred Thompson Speech (RNC Convention) Once upon a time, Fred Thompson ran for president. His campaign was inexplicably late in starting and never got any traction. A lot of conservatives were disappointed because they were looking for a more traditional candidate to fill a perceived void. The choices in 2008 came down to Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and John McCain. We still do not know why Fred Thompson ran such a poor campaign, a question that will not be answered in his RNC convention speech. 'Character you can believe in' 3:02 video at website Fred Thompson says Sen. John McCain has the character that America can "believe in".

POPSRight-wing Propaganda against Obama gets into gear Notice that vile woman (snake?) Michelle Malkin is a contributor, along with Mr. excitement himself, Unca Fred T. These people are vile propagandists, liars and disgusting, obscene purveyors of an agenda that will only foster hatred. I got a very ugly letter out of the blue from this rag.

POPSFear and Loathing in the Republican Party A new low, even for Republicans. Not content with associating Obama with Hitler, now he's being portrayed as the Antichrist! And sadly, enough brain dead fundamentalists are around to make this an issue.
