NASA's "Green" Personal-Air Vehicle 400-mile Race
bloowell
by bloowell  7-31-2008
Centennial Challenges are NASA prize contests to stimulate innovation and competition in solar system exploration and other ongoing NASA mission areas, the agency said. For example, the agency in the past year has held challenges for developing lunar landers and astronaut gloves. The 2008 General Aviation Technology Challenge, which is run by the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation, will be held Aug. 4-10 at the Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, Calif. The highlight of the event is on Aug. 9 when participants will race in the CAFE 400 - a 400 mile air race that will go a long way toward determining who gets the cash.

Belief System
debbyski

"The comforting ceremonies of everyday life seem to continue. The freeways are still full of cars. Nancy Grace comes on TV dependably at 8 p.m. and is there deploring the latest pervert arrest. But there's an equally eerie vibe out there that things are seriously out-of-whack. We're on the edge of something. We're at the entrance of a dark passage where some of the ceremonies of daily life meet resistance. You go to the WalMart and five of your six credit cards are refused. Uh oh. It begins to dawn on you that you're spending a quarter of your take-home pay filling up the gas-tank every week. Events are not through with us this year. They'll keep moving where they will whether we believe in them or not. I'm hardly even convinced that it matters who wins the presidential race this year. It could end up being the world's biggest booby prize."

Remember Personal Hovercraft by 2000?
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  6-25-2007    6
How great would this be! Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever see it happen. As my title to this clip laments, I'm still waiting for my own personal hover craft that was promised over 50 years ago and still isn't here. Ah, but there's always hope. :-)

The Paradox of Our Age
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  2-4-2007    2
WE BUILD more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication; we've become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure and less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition. These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes.

The Right Was Right
drdreus
by drdreus  11-9-2006    5
Now that the elections are over we can all focus on what really matters: calling each other names. This time around we have someone on the Right pretending to be someone on the Left and thence presenting the Democrat's "new manifesto" to Congress. I figured this would be pretty stupid... and it is. But it's so patently absurd that it actual moves into the realm of humour. Afterthought: It's either that or someone really on the Left making fun of people on the Right for their paranoia about what will happen when the "godless, heathen, french-hippie communists" take over. I didn't bother to do enough research. Either way, enjoy. Or don't.
