POPSAmazon.com: "Know Your Failure" * "A total waste of time and money. If you are thinking about buying this book, you'd get more enjoyment in tossing the money out the window of a car at 60 mph and watching it flutter in the wind rather than be tortured by the vacuous content of this work. Worst of the worst books I have ever read." * "Actually full disclosure my (very liberal) sister bought it as a gag birthday gift. ..One of the most damning things I can say about any book is that I found myself day dreaming while I was reading it; I was that bored. I found it difficult be read because Speaker Pelosi has perfected the art of using a bunch of words but not actually saying anything." * "I guess the real message to America's daughters is "Don't grow up to be an angry, bitter, botoxed anti-American liberal." * "I just finished reading this book. It was very hard to get through. I found it poorly written as well. With respect to what she wrote, I find none of it believable."

POPSComputer Scientists Ask Court to Reconsider Gag Order in DefCon Case
But the students have maintained that they planned to withhold key information from their talk that would have allowed someone to replicate their tests in a manner that could be used to defraud the transit system. (Some of that key information, however, has since become public because the MBTA included it in documents that it submitted to the court.) The EFF called the judge's decision to grant the restraining order an unconstitutional prior restraint of speech. The letter supporting the students is signed by Dave Farber, who holds the title of distinguished career professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University and is purveyor of the popular Interesting People mail list as well as a trustee of the EFF; and computer scientists Steve Bellovin from Columbia University; David Wagner from UC Berkeley; Dan Wallach from Rice University; and Matt Blaze from the University of Pennsylvania. Wired.com columnist Bruce Schneier is also a signatory to the letter.

POPSRealities of Conflict
When the spectre of suicide bombers recently emerged, I remember the din of disbelief that such a weapon can be conquered. In a letter to Gordon Marsden MP Blackpool, I informed him that the niceties of war have to be suspended as the prevalent 'duty of care' has to be ones own soldiers. He would not engage someone who had fought on three continents and had some experience of similar situations. You never let a stranger within blast distance of a section. If he has to be shot for not getting down on the ground, so-be-it. And the army should be deploying dogs, no matter how it upsets the Pathan. A well trained sniffer dog will save lives. Once the dog starts to react the handler can immediately caller bomber and the troops disperse. Sometimes the dog-handler will misread the situation, but it is not his fault. Blame the politicians who did not think this situation through. A thousand years of confronting different invaders and Blair and Bush expected the Pathan to welcome the

POPSThe Comedy Stylings of Shecky McCain At the time, McCain’s spokesperson (Torrie Clark, yes, that one) alleged that this was story was some manipulation by the Richard Kimball campaign. Yep, it’s always the other guy’s fault. I wonder if the reporter on that story, Norma Coile, was treated to the screaming phone call that McCain has treated so many local reporters to when they dare write a negative story about him. UPDATE - Because you demanded it, here is a PDF of the original article from 1986.

POPSGag me The reason they aren't writing jokes is summed up in what Stewart said, "So far, our take is that he is positioning himself to be on a coin". They are so in the tank for Obama. At least they are honest. What puzzles me is that they must know by now he doesn't have any new ideas. He doesn't have any friends that he won't throw under a bus. He, as it turns out, is just another politician who thinks he can get away with saying one thing to one audience, another to another and then deny he ever said or took any position. This guy is not even slick about it and in this day and age EVERYTHING is on video. But everyone is giving him a pass. And for what. SO that we can have Carter part II. JEesh!

POPSNew rights for terror detainees as deeply split Supreme Court rules It isn't hard to figure out why the right wingers are all in an uproar over this--you see it gives rights to human beings that aren't Amerikans and that's unthinkable because if we actually see our "enemies" (anyone not Amerikan or kissing our leader's butt) as HUMAN BEINGS and not just some vile brown monkeys like we're supposed to. How sad is that? What has Amerika become? Are we so vile as to deny basic rights to everyone not born here? And when theyu are given the barest of rights--not freedom, juist a chance at Justice--The bile that comes from the Right wing, from Scalia to Giuliani to Limbaugh is so odious, I may gag.
