POPSReactionary anti-women "men's rights" groups go mainstream
More: Toward the end of her piece, Joyce makes a particularly fascinating point about MRAs' domestic violence arguments: Critics like Australian sociologist Michael Flood say that men’s rights movements reflect the tactics of domestic abusers themselves, minimizing existing violence, calling it mutual, and discrediting victims. MRA groups downplay national abuse rates, just as abusers downplay their personal battery; they wage campaigns dismissing most allegations as false, as abusers claim partners are lying about being hit; and they depict the violence as mutual—part of an epidemic of wife-on-husband abuse—as individual batterers rationalize their behavior by saying that the violence was reciprocal. Additionally, MRA groups’ predictions of future violence by fed-up men wronged by the family-law system seem an obvious additional correlation, with the threat of violence seemingly intended to intimidate a community, like a fearful spouse, into compliance.

POPSSex and Gender
In fact, behind your question is the fundamental problem of the degree to which behaviour is innate and to which it is acquired – an essential question that philosophers and scientists have been debating for centuries. This remains an ideologically-charged subject, which the media adore. Absolutely. The media often echo works that argue that cerebral specialisation differs between male and female. They say, for example, that language functions are undertaken by both hemispheres only in women’s brains. What do you say? The theories on the hemispheric differences between the sexes in language appeared over thirty years ago. They have not been confirmed by recent brain imaging studies which allow us to see the living brain at work. These theories are often based on observations carried out on very small samples – often a dozen people. People continue to quote these studies whereas contemporary scientific reality is very different. Meta-analyses, which draw conclusions from all the exp

POPSHow the media skew gender research More: could it just be that studies that appear to support traditional roles for women tend to get picked for instant popularization? This phenomenon doesn't just apply to studies about daycare with the potential to guilt-trip working mothers. Rush Limbaugh, also last March, cheerfully reported the results of a Swedish study that seemed to show a correlation between poor health and a more gender-equal distribution of societal resources. That same study was picked up by the British Independent. The popularized message was that feminism makes you sick. Neither Rush Limbaugh nor the Independent paid any attention to an earlier study by the same researchers showing the reverse. They also ignored other studies finding a positive correlation between greater gender-equality and better overall health. It seems that a researcher can garner more press just by publishing a study with results that social conservatives wish to hear.

POPSUK: Report Condemns "Sharia courts" Sunday, July 05, 2009 From the Solicitor's Journal: “The underlying problem is that Sharia law reflects male-dominated Asian and Arabic cultures. It cannot therefore be accepted as a legally valid basis even for settling private disagreements in a country like ours, where our law embodies the equal legal status of everyone, regardless of race, gender or religion. Our system is based on moral and legal equality or it is nothing.” http://www.solicitorsjournal.com/story.asp?sectioncode=2&storycode=14487&c=1&eclipse_action=getsession&eclipse_action=getsession

POPSGirls worse at math? No way, new analysis shows We conclude that gender inequality, not lack of innate ability or 'intrinsic aptitude', is the primary reason fewer females than males are identified as excelling in mathematics performance in most countries, including the United States," Janet Hyde and Janet Mertz of the University of Wisconsin in Madison wrote in their report.

POPSZionist Females Ranked 53rd of 115, behind Turkey. The study did not include marriage or divorce, or a yet, which would place Israel behind most Muslim states. Both are controlled by Orthodox rabbis. The 'court' is all male. The so called non-secular 'democratic' state has no input.

POPSAre Men becoming Extinct? "... Women in communities heavily polluted with such chemicals in Canada, Russia and Italy have given birth to twice as many girls than boys. This may help explain a mysterious shift in sex ratios worldwide. Normally 106 boys are born for every 100 girls, but the ratio is slipping. It is calculated that 250,000 babies who statistically would have been boys have been born as girls instead in the U.S. and Japan alone. Sperm counts are dropping quickly. Studies in more than 20 countries have shown that they have dropped from 150 million per milliliter of sperm fluid to 60 million over 50 years."

POPSSociology - Put it into practice Some of the support areas that I am including in my thesis rely on this field. I feel an understanding of sociology and what groups in the field are doing is invaluable. By knowing ourselves we better understand each other, in turn an understanding of the interactions between us all give insight into the individuality that makes up each of us.

POPSFeel Like Getting In Touch with Your Feminine Side? I don’t know whether to take this seriously or not. It has a very SciFi feel to it. I can’t say that I have heard of stranger things happening but with all the chemicals we are exposed to every day of our lives I suppose a certain combination of them could trigger this. Still, I don’t know. I’d have to see a separate study come to the same conclusion before I believe it.
