'Scar Eating' Enzyme Aids Spine Repair
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2009
Other teams have shown that delivering an enzyme from bacteria that digests scar tissue may help. "The problem has been this enzyme is really sensitive and degrades very fast," says Bellamkonda. He says the enzyme, chondroitinase ABC (chABC), is heat sensitive and must be repeatedly injected or infused into the body to work. Hollow straws Bellamkonda's team found a way to overcome both of those issues. They mixed the enzyme with a sugar called trehalose that made it stable at internal body temperature. And instead of injecting the enzyme into the spinal cord, they put it into tiny hollow straws just twice the length of a single cell. They inject these at the injury site in a special gel that keeps the straws in place. Bellamkonda's team tested the system in rats and found the enzyme prevented scar tissue formation for up to six weeks. "The goal is that at the time the surgeon is removing the offending (vertebrae) bone after the injury you would inject this gel to si

Slasher Politics
merrie
by merrie  10-25-2009
Per Jigsaw’s instructions, turncoat Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) shepherds the insurance company nitwits to their demise. No reason why the ”Saw” franchise shouldn’t jump on the pop-culture Obama cheerleading train like everyone else in La-la with a little B-flick health-care advocacy. And with the loan officer thing, there’s something for everyone! One thing slasher fans may want to bear in mind, though. When your gaping, bloody saw wounds need to be stitched and stapled up, do you really want to wait in line for the lowest bidder? Boston Herald’s Tenley Woodman gives Saw VI a “D.” No, not for the feel-good politics embedded in the middle of a feel-bad extravaganza. … it is the depraved acts and gore that make these films objectionable. Hate to quibble, but I think that’s what makes them marketable.

The Personhood of Corporations
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-28-2009
I started out with clipping the Mark Morford article called "This is a difficult letter to write, Of course it will never happen to you. Until it does. --- As frightening as becoming a victim of the Capitalist System is... there is even a more shocking event going on right now in the chambers of the Supreme Court. This Bush/Roberts Court is about to give to the greedy corporations the power to gobble up all our freedoms and become the omnipotent POWER over everything and everyone who inhabits this Earth. They (the corp) will have the power to choose who is to be elected here in the USA Excerpt from this article: http://forum.colbertnation.com/tcr/board/message?board.id=politics&thread.id=12732 This new case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, presents the best opportunity for the Roberts Court to use its five vote majority to totally re-write the face of politics in America, rolling us back to the pre-1907 era of the Robber Barons. THIS IS NO JOKE! thinkin

How are Banks Spending Bailout $? Treasury Doesn't Care
Wisco
by Wisco  12-10-2008
The piece tells us: Today, Neel Kashkari, the Treasury official supervising the TARP, testified before Congress. And as before , he rejected the idea of tracking the money. “Each financial institution’s circumstances are different, making comparisons challenging at best, and it is difficult to track where individual dollars flow through an organization,“ he explained in his opening statement . Let me go ahead and translate that from bullshit to English; "Keeping track of money's a lot of work. We can't expect banks -- whose business is dealing with money -- to do that." It begs the question; what does anyone actually do at the Treasury Dept.? Is it anything like work?

Michael Crichton 1942 - 2008
Mohir
by Mohir  11-6-2008    2
But what a strange career the man had, from Harvard Medical School to the top of the book and movie charts to Hollywood blockbusters to odd best-selling jeremiads against Japanese businessmen and global warming activists. The consistent themes of his work are the consequences of man's own hubris and a thoroughgoing paranoia. Someone is always coming up with a brilliant notion in Crichton, and it always goes hideously kablooey. Bring dinosaurs back to life? Okay, but they'll escape and gobble you up. Organ transplants? Fine until the medical establishment starts harvesting them for profit. Robots? Forget about the robots: they'll shoot you down ("Westworld") or come after you with knives ("Runaway"). Plastic surgery, biotech implants, chasing tornadoes? All terrible, terrible ideas ("Looker," "The Terminal Man," "Twister").

But right now they seem to be holding on to the illusion of gas/diesel vehicles. Not as bad as ford, but certainly they are not going the route of toyota.

One Bite for Me, One Giant Leap for the Chocolate Box
Sheroug
by Sheroug  5-11-2008    3
No one was going to obstruct the destiny of this little chocolate delight: my mouth. While it was shaped, the nut placed inside had my name on it, and so forth, untill it reached my home where I picked it out from the rest of the golden sun-balls which are probably written for members of the family, unless I get to them first that is. By the time I had reflected over this little chocolate’s epic journey, it had disappeared from my hand and it was all over really- one of the best chocolate experiences to data where I ate and simultaneously marvelled at a gift from God that had my name on it. I must admit I was tempted to go for another bite and revisit the journey in more detail, but perhaps tomorrow. I hate to over-indulge and hey, if my name is written on one of them (or even all of them), then it’s surely destined to be mine. It’s just a matter of mouth-watering time. *from the source I was in Belgium last summer, redefined chocolate for me. Gained 2 kg too =/

Biofuel is a new craze but no saviour!
bs1999bs
by bs1999bs  3-7-2008
We are being conned as biofuels gobble up our rainforests and valuable agricultural land. In typical fashion, mankind is reaching out for an "instant cure" - a pill to pop mentality without getting to root causes and enlightened answers! As in fresh water supplies and minerals we are seeing the vested interests hell-bent on fleecing society of its natural wealth. These elements don't give a damn as they "line their pockets" at the cost to society generally!

VIDEO GAMING--DIAGNOSABLE MENTAL DISORDER
freedomschild
by freedomschild  11-27-2007
"Can we go outside to play?" (we used to hear that all the time, now no one is pleading to go outside, just to sit in front of a redundancy whose only objective is to destroy, maim, and kill without concern -- except as to how many points they can get for the worst afflications they can exact.) I'm stunned that no parent seems concerned or worried about the mindset this gaming is creating in their child's mind. Perhaps it is enough for these caretakers of the world's most precious cargo, to just be left alone. No one sits down for dinner at the family dining table anymore. It's grab your plate, load it up and disappear into their bedrooms with only the pc, playstation, tv, etc., to gobble up non-nutritous spoons of something akin to a meal. This whole country reminds me of a village whose water has been contaminated by some unseen destructive force; whose objective is to shrivel the mind& bodies of the inhabitants of the village.

Giant Turkey Chases Boston Woman, Pecks Bottom Repeatedly
Kore7
by Kore7  10-24-2007    16
When dispatched to the scene of a turkey, Verrier offers advice instead. He tells people not to feed them, not to be intimidated by them, and to keep their distance. Still, some people cannot help themselves. They need to be near the turkeys. Distance-shmistance, we want to be near the turkeys. I, for one, am against the city of Boston trying to regulate mutually consensual human-turkey behavior. A light ass-pecking never hurt anyone, am I right? Even though this incident happened right near my apartment, I have not been lucky enough to experience any super-sized turkeys on my errands, sadly. Look at the size of that sucker...he's gotta be like 12 feet tall! :)

The Sneaky Chef-Getting kids to eat vegetables
pokkets
by pokkets  10-21-2007
I've heard Kids aren't born hating any foods, they 'learn' to dislike certain foods. Two books recently published sugest pureed foods mixed with 'kid's' meals can be a solution. I wondered what a 'kid's' meal was supposed to be, and whether the books were one means of countering the brainwashing children recieve during advertisments for snack foods, fast foods, candy, and peer group pressure. Another point is that children have a sense of taste that is more sensitive, e.g. very few children can handle chilli. Children can be introduced early to a healthy diet, and the definition of 'kid's' meal can be something not only nutritious, but one where the children are aware ofwhat they are eating, and it's value. The biggest problem can be the introduction of eating patterns, at 4's when children have learned to say no. I'm sure one of the problems can be giving them ultimatums, and they decide to be contrary for it's own sake. Perhaps they can be shown eating can be a discovery.
