Ancient Greek Music Theory - Modes
Rustee
by Rustee  6-1-2008    3
The Greeks had developed a complex system of relating particular emotional and spiritual characteristics to certain modes (scales). The names for the various modes derived from the names of Greek tribes and peoples, the temperament and emotions of which were said to be characterized by the unique sound of each mode, which included the Ancient Greek subgroups (Ionians, Dorians, Aeolians), one small region in central Greece (Locris), and certain neighboring (non-Greek) peoples from Asia Minor (Lydia, Phrygia). Thus, Dorian modes were "harsh", Phrygian modes "sensual", and so forth.

Ancient Greece
merrie
by merrie  5-19-2008
Ancient Greece consisted chiefly of a peninsula that separated the two seas, nearby islands, and the coast of Asia Minor (now part of Turkey). Greek civilization developed later than that of the Euphrates and Nile valleys, but earlier than that of Rome. Ancient Greece reached its highest point of achievement in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C., but its influence remained strong throughout the era of Roman supremacy. Vigorous, adventuresome, and freedom-loving, of strong practicality and great intellectual capacity, they produced art, architecture, literature, drama, and philosophic concepts that have never been surpassed. The Greeks developed the political institution of democracy, established freedom of speech and religion, and founded a system of law defining the rights of citizens. They made major discoveries in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and medicine. The first experimental scientists were Greeks.

I know I saw this site clipped waaay back last year sometime (maybe by John W??) , but with all the "Jesus-talk" on here lately....I figured it was high time we all took another look at the evidence (and lack of it) for these supernatural claims. ******************************************* It's a really fascinating site: www.jesusneverexisted.com

kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  11-25-2007
BUT NOT IF WE HAD A NATIONAL SPOKESMAN. If Dennis Kucinich, for example, took the lead and suggested to the American people that it would be win/win for America if we boycotted certain blatantly fascist and/or racist and/or anti American companies, that would almost surely launch a national movement, and that's what we need, a “national movement”. Of course it wouldn't have to be Kucinich, Gore would be nice, Bill Richardson, or WHOMEVER (preferably a Democratic Presidential Candidate), but with such high profile leadership, this thing could actually happen. It would be "safe" for whatever candidate supported this, since in a certain sense boycotts are “politically neutral" Sounds like a plan!

Children "Fattened Up Before Ritual Killing
Marcariel
by Marcariel  10-5-2007
We may never really know the full reasoning behind all of the ritualistic killing in native cultures. If there are no written documents to shed light on what we view as pagan, cruel rituals, we can only study and continue to speculate on the religious significance. These killings, or sacrifices to the religious powers (gods or goddesses), are in evidence world wide, on every continent. Interesting reading.
