POPSGOP Senator: Republicans are Running Scared The question here is what lesson do Republicans think they've learned -- will they conclude that they're unpopular because their ideology has been pretty thoroughly been disproved or will they just assume they've got some sort of marketing problem with "messaging" and "branding?" That's the question to ask if you want to know when they're getting out of this hole. If they assume the latter, they'll remain sunk.

POPSGroup Claims MLK Was GOPby

The article goes on: In "The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.," which was published after his death from his written material and records, King called the Republican national convention that nominated Goldwater a "frenzied wedding ... of the KKK and the radical right." "The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism," King said in the book. Doesn't sound very Republican to me.

POPSClark Not Backing Down The piece goes on: "The only orchestration was by Republicans," Clark said, referring to unsubstantiated accusations that his criticism was encouraged by Obama, who has repeatedly distanced himself from Clark's remark. "I think that since John McCain's hired the Swift Boat team to protect his military record," Clark continued, "they just decided they would launch a preemptive strike." McCain has recruited Swift Boater Bud Day to serve on his "Truth Squad." The hypocrisy of that is massive...

POPSSeeds of Current Propaganda found in Reagan Era
Enduring Skills Beyond these individuals, the manipulative techniques that were refined in the 1980s — especially the skill of exaggerating foreign threats — have proved durable, bringing large segments of the American population into line behind the Iraq War in 2002-03. Only now — with more than 4,100 U.S. soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead — are many of these Americans realizing that were manipulated by clever propaganda, that their perceptions had been managed. For instance, the New York Times recently pried loose some 8,000 pages of Pentagon documents revealing how the Bush administration had manipulated the public debate on the Iraq War by planting friendly retired military officers on TV news shows. Retired Green Beret Robert S. Bevelacqua, a former analyst on Murdoch’s Fox News, said the Pentagon treated the retired military officers as puppets: “It was them saying, ‘we need to stick our hands up your back and move your mouth for you.’” [NYT, April 20,

POPSBoth sides of your mouth... Conservatives are experts at speaking out of both sides of their mouths... The latest case in point: They seem outraged at Gen W. Clark's comments about McCain's experience... but I bet many of these folks were the same people that wore "purple band-aids" at the 2004 Republican convention denoting their "contempt" for 2x purple heart winner John Kerry and his Vietnam war record. I guess you only have to respect the service of conservatives.

POPSRepublican Hagel Doesn't Endorse McCain It's not extremely surprising. Hagel's been the antiwar Republican for some time now. Still, "Republican won't endorse McCain" is not a headline the GOP wants to read right now.

POPSJudiciary Committee Willl Subpoena Atty. Gen. Mukasey It's about damn time they get off the dime to follow and prosecute the LAW they have all sworn to uphold. If Mukasey balks or won't testify under oath, that trick BushCo loves, they better arrest his sorry ass and let him sit for contempt until he does.

POPSCheers, President Bush, You Win! And through it all you avoided repercussions. Even losing GOP House and Senate majorities hasn’t slowed you down much. There's so much raw evidence to impeach your ass that it would be as easy as Dick Cheney shooting a lawyer in the face. The rap sheet is a mile long. Yet you remain 100 percent unscathed, threatened by nothing more than a pretzel getting stuck in your craw. That's amazing. My peasant hat is off to you.

POPSTed Haggard Completes “Spiritual Restoration Program” And the money quote: "New pastor Brady Boyd said Haggard was now free to live where he wanted and has returned to Colorado Springs." Wasn't he free to live anywhere he wanted before? I mean he wasn't charged with having and using of Meth or soliciting a prostitute (sorry a whore is a whore regardless of sex). Oh he meant he is de-gayed. Ooh! I see!

POPSMcCain's Image Campaign: "I Hate War" (You believe me don't you?) Soft, sentimental music plays with this message. Playing now on a TV near you, including in small states like West Virginia as well as those listed as "battle grounds". This is quite a contrast to his "Bom, bom, bom...bomb, bomb Iran" to the Beach Boys segment here. Will the real John McCain please stand up? Going into war with Iraq had nothing to do with "keeping the country I love safe", whatsoever, unless you still believe Iraq was behind 9/11 and possessed WMD. These are neoconservative wars planned in advance of 9/11 and James Woolsey and Bill Kristol (key neocon and PNAC members) are among his advisers, and his foreign policy is called "rogue state roll-back"--i.e. more wars for democracy!

POPSIs McCain Coming Around On ANWR? It will take years for the technologies to mature, the costs to come down and the national fleet to be changed over from its petroleum base. In the interim, we will need crude oil and plenty of it. Since the stability of our present sources of oil cannot be relied upon, our nation's security has been put at considerable risk. McCain realizes that the U.S. no longer has any choice but to develop its own dependable domestic energy supply and infrastructure. He's also politically astute enough to understand this: McCain's position is likely to help him solidify support among conservatives, which political analysts say he needs to do to guarantee a strong GOP turnout in November. His position also puts him in line with Republicans in the House and Senate, who are pushing legislation in Congress to lift the ban.

POPSWebb Splits With Obama Over Drilling Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois and Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York dismissed any concerns about Webb’s stance, saying they did not notice his proposal Wednesday. Durbin, however, pointedly rejected Webb’s argument that states should have the right to make drilling decisions. The legislation “offers a preliminary step toward exploration and development of one of our domestic energy sources,” Webb said. “In order to address our nation’s energy crisis, all options need to be on the table.” One of Virginia’s most prominent environmental groups also opposes Webb’s idea, saying there is no plausible environmental distinction between gas and oil drilling and that any environmental damage would spread far beyond Virginia’s coast. “This puts the camel’s nose under the tent,” said Glen Besa, director of the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club.

POPSThese Videos May Cure Your Ignorance About A Few Things... Open Your Mind Sheeple These Videos May Cure Your Ignorance About A Few Things... Open Your Mind Sheeple ! This is a partial excerpt of videos that all Americans should watch just to balance out what you are being fed by the major news networks and GOP produced propaganda machines. We are not discussing anything new. This is not about 'conspiracy'. It is about YOU becoming informed so you can make better decisions FOR YOURSELF instead of being told what to think by our so called 'mainstream media' According to reputable international news watchers the U.S. used to be in the Top Ten of 'free press' ratings in the world. Now, we are something like Number 30 on the list of countries with 'free media' reporting. That statistic by itself should prompt your mind to question why our five major multi-billion dollar news media conglomerates (who control some 80% of all newsprint, broadcast, cable and electronic

POPSGOP Fears Libertarian Barr Could Be an '08 Spoiler If a vote's close in a swing state, Barr could pull even a small percenage and throw it to Obama. On the other hand, since recent polling gives Obama a double digit lead nationally, a "spoiler effect" might be a moot point.

POPSFISA Deal Reached That sounds pretty sensible, although I'll need to read the language first to get a sense of what really happened. Stay tuned.

POPSWhy Jim Webb Probably Won't be Obama's VP It's not this one issue per se, but Webb's habit of being his own man. I don't agree with Webb here, but I still admire his willingness to do what he believes is right -- regardless of the political pressure put on him not to. Given that Webb's greatest strength is this rock-solid integrity, he's more the leader type than a follower. That may be a good trait to have in a cabinet member, but not as a running mate. You really need someone you can rely on to be on the same page.

POPSGreenwald: House Democrats 'Downright Pathetic' on FISA Glenn Greenwald's a constitutional scholar and it's nice to see that someone out there still gives a damn about the Bill of Rights. House leadership sure doesn't. When Republicans wanted to lynch the Fourth Amendment, Democrats bravely offered to buy the rope.

POPSDems Running On Empty: Sen. James Inhofe
Not only was I joined by dozens of GOP Senators, but nearly 30% of the Democratic Senators rebelled against their leadership and opposed the Boxer Climate Tax Bill. In the end, Senator Boxer only had at most 35 Democratic Senators willing to vote for final passage on the largest tax bill in U.S. history. The Boxer Climate Tax Bill was thoroughly disowned by Democratic Leadership and The Wall Street Journal aptly noted that environmentalists are “stunned that their global warming agenda is in collapse.” Just a few days after the embarrassing defeat of the climate bill, the Democrats were at it again. As the price of gas at the pump continued to climb, Democrats were proposing yet another energy tax as part of their “solution” to our energy challenges. A major component of the Democrats’ “no” energy bill would reinstate the Windfall Profits Tax. Democrats want to impose the tax despite the fact that we tried this almost 30 years ago, with disastrous results.
