POPSOrganized Religion Preaches Love but Practices Unacceptance This article is a good example of the negatives of organized religion. While many of them preach love, kindness, and peace, in practice they do nothing but reinforce nonacceptance of anyone or anything that does not conform to the religion's teachings and standards. I understand the psychological role or organized religion in our society, but I continue to stand by the belief that organized religion has been the cause of the great majority of the major wars, conflicts, and hatred in our history. Starting with the crusades and going up through to the terrorism we see in the world today. Religions reinforce that anyone or anything outside of their teachings are "wrong" and that those who don't "believe" are not worthy and should be punished. I firmly believe we won't have world peace until organized religion becomes a thing of the past.

POPSBrain drug abuse on the radar
They restrict the damage that is caused by this kind of drug, in a similar way to the way they have restricted the damage caused by addictive drugs in the present, and the past. One dangerous side effect of 'stay alert' or 'thought accelerators' is that often they can be taken at the expense of the minimum required amount of sleep (which can vary from person to person.) Sleep is necessary for our brains to operate properly, and they've yet been able to find any cases where it can be compromised to any great extent. Sleep deprivation can lead to delusion and psychosis, poor concentration, and performance, and both short and long term memory loss. A bad combination. Where too many 'flashes of brilliance' are really just flashes. By the way. Who is going to test these drugs. Perhaps we'll have some smart monkeys that will unify Einstein's 'Grand Universal Theory' for us. I'm sure they'd find it much easier to be objective. (Douglas Adams told us what happens when you have smart mice

POPSThe Great Global Warming Swindle A convincing argument ... except that the 'precautionary principle' does dicate that we take action to mitigate the contribution of man-made greenhouse gasses. The data I have seen is 'similar but different' to what is presented in this movie.

POPS♫ Cellist Jacqueline du Pré ♥ - glimpses of eternity The embedded video is linked to my Jacqueline du Pré playlist on YouTube. (Overall duration: almost 1,5 h.) Jacqueline du Pré and Kathleen Ferrier - these two great British artists died when they had scarcely reached the fifth decade of their lifes. Their personalities will never be forgotten, and their art is living on. "Teach us, sprite or bird, What sweet thoughts are thine; I have never heard Praise of love or wine That panted forth a flood Of rapture so divine." (P.B. Shelley - To a Skylark) (See also morgainelefaye's Jacqueline du Pré clip .) Addendum: J. du P.'s biography on Oxford DNB podcast

POPSFlesh-eating Starfish go for lunch "We witnessed a number of active outbreaks of this coral predator. There was little to suggest that the reefs have been much affected by climate change as yet: the threats appear far more localised." The scientists found there were still healthy populations of certain species around the reefs and believe there is still time to reverse the damage. (DT)

POPSIs mobile advertising really a good idea? For the past few years we've been hearing a lot about mobile advertising and how it would be so great to be able to deliver "context-specific" ads to people on the move. Arguably, the mobile phone is one of the very few media & communications devices that has not been colonized by advertising (yet). Will that happen? Is mobile advertising ever going to be a good business? How strong is the public's resentment at the violation of one of the few remaining areas of relative privacy? And if the mobile phone can be used for ads, then why not your fridge or youf kitchen table? Probably the next frontier, but until then, pondering on mobile advertising is relevant for anyone in the business of marketing services as well as for brand marketing managers. The way I see it, mobile devices are probably the very best way to bridge the gap between offline and online campaigns and I have a few specific ideas that I will keep for my customers :-)

POPSBritain's great flood a reminder of more to come An unusual meteorological event is responsible for this summer's weathe in the UK, not global warming. A shift to the south in the position of the jet stream brought a heatwave to eastern Europe and storms normally found in higher latitudes to England. But global warming is expected to cause more and more flooding in the UK into the near future.

POPSIraq Gets New Hospitals While New Orleans Hospitals Rot & Die New Orleans hospitals are dying slow deaths, and the levees have been declared insufficient for a severe storm. However, the Louisiana National Guard is doing a great job building new hospitals and health centres in Dyala under intense fire. Over 170 projects of this nature are underway in that area, while nothing is being done to rebuild the medical clinics and hospitals in New Orleans. What kind of sense does this make? Bush says he keeps our country safe. How safe would anyone feel living in a city whose hospitals are falling apart from the neglect of the government who promised to help them?

POPSSave the Archeological Sites In Iran The magnificent archaeological remains at Pasargad and Persepolis are a testament to the industriousness and grandeur of the ancient Persians. However, their loss is not only confined to Iran and her people. These sites serve as an important historical record about our collective past and the beginnings of civilization with many stories and facts yet to be revealed through further study. The tomb of this great man has been recognized and registered by UNESCO as a holly shrine to humanity.
