Convergent evolution
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-14-2009
The huge fossil teeth of megalodon had been known for centuries and were once believed to be the fossilized tongues of dragons. Agassiz, noting that great white shark teeth and the fossil megalodon teeth were both serrated, lumped megalodon into the same genus, Carcharodon, (from the Greek karcharos, meaning sharp or jagged, and odous, meaning tooth). Agassiz was not, however, making an evolutionary judgment. In 1835, a young Charles Darwin was just then visiting the Galapagos Islands. There would be no theory of evolutionary descent for nearly 25 years. In fact, the brilliant Agassiz, who later became a professor at Harvard and the leading figure of natural history in the United States, forever resisted Darwin’s revolutionary ideas. Rejecting biological evolution, Agassiz defined species as a “thought of God.” His classification scheme signified nothing about shark origins. But over the next century, the idea that great whites evolved from megalodon took hold. << more at the

Fire threat empties Athens suburb
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-23-2009
Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers - backed by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft dropping water - are battling the fires but they are too numerous and widespread to contain. "The situation is tragic. Fires are out of control on many fronts," said a regional Athens governor, Yiannis Sgouros. more than 30,000 acres of land had been burnt in what he described as "an ecological disaster". Many residents of the threatened towns and suburbs have fled by car, motorbike and on foot, but others have stayed behind to try to defend their homes. Two children's hospitals, a summer camp and a psychiatric clinic have been evacuated.

Ancient Greece
merrie
by merrie  5-19-2008
Ancient Greece consisted chiefly of a peninsula that separated the two seas, nearby islands, and the coast of Asia Minor (now part of Turkey). Greek civilization developed later than that of the Euphrates and Nile valleys, but earlier than that of Rome. Ancient Greece reached its highest point of achievement in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C., but its influence remained strong throughout the era of Roman supremacy. Vigorous, adventuresome, and freedom-loving, of strong practicality and great intellectual capacity, they produced art, architecture, literature, drama, and philosophic concepts that have never been surpassed. The Greeks developed the political institution of democracy, established freedom of speech and religion, and founded a system of law defining the rights of citizens. They made major discoveries in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and medicine. The first experimental scientists were Greeks.

Ancient Etruscans Were Immigrants From Anatolia
Moonowler
by Moonowler  6-19-2007
Scientists had previously shown this same relationship for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in order to analyse female lineages. The history of the Etruscans extends before the Iron Age to the end of the Roman Republic or from c. 1200 BC to c. 100 BC. Many archaeological sites of the major Etruscan cities were continuously occupied since the Iron Age, and the people who lived in the Etruria region did not appear suddenly, nor did they suddenly start to speak Etruscan. Herodotus’ theory, much criticised by subsequent historians, states that the Etruscans emigrated from the ancient region of Lydia, on what is now the southern coast of Turkey, because of a long-running famine. Half the population was sent by the king to look for a better life elsewhere, says his account, and sailed from Smyrna (now Izmir) until they reached Umbria in Italy.
