Paul Newman tells his family,I want to die at home
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  8-17-2008    2
It was reported last month that he had been readying their oldest child, Nell, to take over his Newman’s Own salad dressings company, the profits of which are given to a charitable foundation. He also has two daughters from his first marriage to Jackie Witte. Newman has so far declined to comment on his condition, apart from saying he is ‘doing nicely’. Rumours about his health surfaced in January. Three months ago, he withdrew from directing a production of

Missing Kids Come in all Colors
dulios
by dulios  8-15-2008    5
Everything from runaway brides to vacationing coeds to murdered military moms to snatched up toddlers and housewives. Be they rich, poor, rural, suburban or city, missing white women and white teens are valued. They are cherished. When violence befalls them it is “news”. It is a surprise that it happened to them—where they live. Theirs are the tragedies that must be covered. They are the victimized who must be championed. Their families are the ones deserving of justice and closure. Their families cannot be left to cope alone. They are the lost that must be found. Nancy Grace doesn’t have an aneurysm on camera when LaToya goes missing. Dan Abrams doesn’t get outraged when Marcus or Jamar vanishes. Katie Couric and Barabara Walters don’t break down in tears when kids from South Central are murdered.

Photographs of War... or Not?
ruralart
by ruralart  7-26-2008    2
What a complicated issue.... I can see the military wanting to preserve security and honor the memory of their dead; I can see families not wanting to be traumatized by photos of their loved ones; but I think about all we are still learning from photographs of WWI and WWII... and if there are no photos of the Iraq war, where will that leave historians of the future? Most of the WWI and WWII photographs were taken by military photographers assigned to document the actions. I wonder if there are still military photographers documenting todays "wars"?

Good Grief, Don't the Naples, Florida Police have better things to do than arrest a man for taking 46 cents from a wishing well? And for the silly Naples' Mall Shopper who snitched to police to go after this notorious penny thief. How Low Can You Stoop? Maybe, next time they'll give you a Big Fat 5 cent reward.

China Silencing Parent Protests over shoddy schools that killed their children
ruralart

Sad that instead of accepting responsibility, and acting to improve the remaining schools, the Chinese government is trying to sweep things under the rug. How many more children must die before they decide to institute and enforce good construction standards?

Freedom Towers - Socialist Government in Action
willhelm
by willhelm  7-6-2008    4
"We can count on government planners to produce the most inefficient projects conceivable by the human mind. Manhattan’s Freedom Tower, intended to rise on the site of 9/11 destruction, is an egregious example . . . ...New York City, the nation’s most socialistically ingrained municipality, in the nation’s premier socialist state, has a long history of public works boon-doggles, of which the Freedom Tower is just the latest. The standard government-planning way to do this is to spend the maximum possible amount of public funds, for the longest possible time, and employ the maximum possible number of unionized workers at the highest imaginable wages. This promotes full employment for voters and life-time tenure for politicians holding the benefits slop buckets at the public pig-feeding trough..." Good grief I'm glad I don't live in that Hell hole of a state.
