The Great Depression Hoax
Rustee
by Rustee  8-30-2008
Are we a nation of whiners, as Phil Gramm put it a little while ago? No, the American public is not whining...More likely, though, Americans are just leaving the whining to pundits and trend reporters. Our problem is not whining. It is persuading young people that, with baby boomers retiring, entitlement programs bulging and the world economy growing ever more competitive, now's the time to roll up the sleeves for something other than tattoos. For example, India produces 2.5 million college graduates every year (with concentrations in high demand fields - electronics, programming, engineering, accounting, etc.), and approximately 90,000 MBA's. Nothing against tattoos, but I do feel ignorance and apathy are much too prominent in America. Awareness of ignorance is the first step to wisdom.

Very Long-Term Backup- Rosetta
wildcat
by wildcat  8-26-2008
One side of the disk contains a graphic teaser. The design shows headlines in the eight major languages of the world today spiraling inward in ever-decreasing size till it becomes so small you have trouble reading it, yet the text goes on getting smaller. The sentences announce: “Languages of the World: This is an archive of over 1,500 human languages assembled in the year 02008 C.E. Magnify 1,000 times to find over 13,000 pages of language documentation.” This graphic side of the disk is pure titanium. A black oxide coating has been added to the surface. The text is etched into that, revealing the whiter titanium. This bold sign board is needed because the pages of genesis which are etched on the mirror-like opposite side of the disk are nearly invisible.

Bayh not the guy
finifinito
by finifinito  8-24-2008
I, along with many Hoosier supporters of Senator Evan Bayh were disappointed to learn he was not chosen to run as Barack Obama's Vice Presidential candidate this weekend. I wish the best of luck to Sen. Joe Biden whom I personally consider to be a decent choice and a good candidate for the office. His experience in Washington and his foreign relations experience will be an asset to the Obama Administration.

Ron Suskind vs. Bush Admin on Iraq-9/11 Fakery
blueridge
by blueridge  8-19-2008    3
Suskind's book has provided documentation of evidence and inside witnesses within the CIA and British Intelligence sources that a fake letter was ordered "from the White House" pretending to be from Saddam's Intelligence Chief to Saddam (whom the U.S. relocated and paid $5 million to) which was laden with lies and a claim of ties between Mohammad Atta (supposed 9/11 ringleader), Al Qaeda, and Iraq--back-dated prior to 9/11--which provided deliberately false claims to connect Iraq to 9/11. The White House has denied (see previous clipmark) but award-winning journalist Suskind summarizes his sources and defends his allegations on Democracy Now (see first podcast "listen" link). The second podcast, Aug. 14, includes House Judiciary Chair John Conyers who has already started an investigation under way which will lead to some kind of action. Conyer's stated the the Senate Intelligence Committee, headed by Jay Rockefeller, has the power to review classified documents to verify this.

White to be another minority
spirithiker
by spirithiker  8-18-2008
Why does this matter? Diversity is a necessary component for a healthy and successfully functioning society. The fact that this information is released now is suspect. Right-wingers will somehow use this as evidence of the need for toughter immigration policies. The superficiality of these numbers become more so as more minority members are voted into public office and begin to hold a larger presence in America's economy. Although the government is using race as the measure, it seems what is being alluded to is really a change in culture, with the inaccurate conjecture being that an increase in minorities will not only change how America looks but what it stands for and the values it upholds.

The Russians Have Always Favored Overkill
merrie
by merrie  8-16-2008
Vladimir Putin had ordered the assassination of Russian journalists and capitalists before Litvinenko, of course. But the Litvinenko murder defined him for the world -- or at least the sane and sensible fraction of the world --- just as Don Corleone in the Godfather ordered the decapitated horse's head to be placed in Jack Woltz' bedroom. Like the bloody horse head, Polonium poisoning signaled a public but deniable threat to Putin's enemies: Defy me, and I can use the rarest poison in the world to kill you anywhere I choose. And I will get away with it, because everybody else is cowed. Which is exactly what happened. Putin never paid a price, and in the manner of bullies everywhere, he was emboldened when the Brits failed to respond to Litvinenko's assassination in the middle of London. That is why Putin's invasion of the small, free, and democratic Republic of Georgia was predictable. Today the Russian threat to the Ukraine is just as obvious.

"You Furnish the Pictures and I'll Furnish the War"
sahara
by sahara  8-14-2008    2
Both repeatedly called for armed intervention, then later, all-out war. The atrocities General Weyler committed in Cuba were massively hyped and sensationalized in the US newspapers, then engaged in a practice known as "yellow journalism". The two kingpins of the press at the time were William R. Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, who were embroiled in a vicious circulation war, in which Hearst even "stole" Pulitzer's most popular writers by convincing them to defect through promises of money and positions. Hearst's major publication was the New York Journal and Pulitzer's publication was the New York World. In order to grow their circulations, both men were willing to go so far as to make up stories. The Spanish-American War was not the height of Hearst's power. Afterwards, he continued to grow his media empire for several decades, and even successfully ran for a seat in Congress. Hearst was the rough basis for the wealthy journalist-baron in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.

The Five GOP Senators Killing The Energy Issue For Americans
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2008    1
The WSJ explains that by "riding voter discontent over high gas prices, the GOP has made antidrilling Democrats this summer's headlines." But, along comes the Gang of 10, complete with five GOP senators who are quite eager to stick it to conservatives and cave in to the Democrats. The plan is a Democratic giveaway. New production on offshore federal lands is left to state legislatures, and then in only four coastal states. The regulatory hurdles are huge. And the bill bars drilling within 50 miles of the coast -- putting off limits some of the most productive areas. Alaska's oil-rich Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is still a no-go. The highlight is instead $84 billion in tax credits, subsidies and federal handouts for alternative fuels and renewables. The Gang of 10 intends to pay for all this in part by raising taxes on . . . oil companies! The Republican Five has potentially given antidrilling Democrats the political cover they need to neutralize energy through November.

Complex decision? Don't sleep on it
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-11-2008    4
Since its publication two years ago by a Dutch research team in the journal Science, the earlier finding had been used to encourage decision-makers to make "snap" decisions (for example, in the best-selling book Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell) or to leave complex choices to the powers of unconscious thought ("Sleep on it", Dijksterhuis et al., Science, 2006). But in the new study, to be published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, scientists ran four experiments in which participants were presented with complex decisions and asked to choose the best option immediately ("blink"), after a period of conscious deliberation ("think"), or after a period of distraction ("sleep on it"), which is claimed to encourage "unconscious thought processes". In all experiments, there was some evidence that conscious deliberation can lead to better choices and little evidence for superiority of choices made "unconsciously".

The Most Important Story So Far This Month

I join you in your anger, disgust and dismay. I'ts the best news corporate can buy! (0.00 / 0) Between this story and the Matthew McConaughey placenta spectacular, I thank God I've lived long enough to remember what journalism used to be. Including the status of our servicemen and women, there are so many issues to be tackled and this...is the best that media can come up with? I'm too flustered to read more than the headlines of this swill. Specifically gave up on network television news 2 years ago...is print next?

Anthrax Mystery, In-Depth Podcast
blueridge
by blueridge  8-6-2008    1
Must hear podcast. McCain tied the Anthrax attacks to Iraq in 2001 on the David Letterman show, to justify war, as did Bush (knowing there was no evidence to say such--lying). In-depth interviews here on Democracy Now podcast trace the clear evidence that whoever sent the letters engaged in purposeful propaganda to push the "War on terrorism" (Middle East regime change) and Homeland Security (fear-based) agendas. Also details about the suicide suspect Ivins by a person who knew him and the FBI's suspicious handling of the entire case. Alot of facts that the MSM is not covering while they parrot everything from the FBI without any investigation of their own former stories. (Interview in podcast follows headlines, etc...fast forward).
