POPSThe Battle for Facebook A very intriguing profile of the early days of Facebook. I suppose if my college roommates started a $15 billion company I'd be going after a piece of the pie, or at least begging for crumbs. Ironically, I saw my college roommates this weekend. What did we do after the party? Post the photo on Facebook. Help this guy get richer. Claire Hoffman writes great stories. If you enjoy this read her (non-flattering) profile of Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis. http://www.latimes.com/features/printedition/magazine/la-tm-gonewild32aug06,1,4548814.story?page=1

POPSKung Fu Panda There is much to like about this movie. The story is fun, the animation is good, the characters are lovable. What I really liked about this movie was the lack of profanity, name calling, sexual innuendos, and gross humor. It is really hard to find a new movie for kids that doesn't use the word stupid. It might be in there, but I don't remember hearing it, and I usually cringe at every instance. I do not want my daughter to use derogatory language (sweet words that edify!) and it is difficult to find movies or tv that doesn't drip with it. This is a fun, heart-warming story with a lot of kung fu. It got one of the best ratings at Kids-in-Mind, too. (1, 3, 1)

POPSThe Contrarian Nature of George Bush But recent events have led me to choose one of the movie's lesser characters -- Younger Bear, Little Big Man's nemesis within the Cheyenne tribe. In the course of the movie, Younger Bear becomes a "contrary," a strange phenomenon in Native American plains culture who says and does the opposite of what he actually intends. He rides his horse facing the rear, says "hello" when he means "goodbye," washes in the dirt and dries off in the creek. I came to this conclusion after Bush's recent speech in Israel, where he famously equated Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's willingness to hold talks with Iran with the appeasement of Adolf Hitler prior to World War II. Pretty inflammatory rhetoric anywhere, but in front of the Knesset? Really over the top.

POPSThe History Channel presents: GETTING HIGH See how Timothy Leary and Aldous Huxley brought the drug into the public eye, while singer Grace Slick and Ralph Metzner a member of the Harvard group that conducted early LSD experiments share remarkably divergent tales of their encounters with acid. And scholars add perspective by examining the role of hallucinogens in societies throughout history.

POPSHerbert Marcuse - The seeds of Materialism in American Culture 1964 Marcuse published One-Dimentional Man, a critique of both advanced capitalism and communism. It looks at the loss of potential for revolution and new forms of social control in capitalist society. ______________________________________________________________ Marcuse's popular lectures at the university were harshly critiques of American civilization. His audience included many students who would eventually make their own marks as influential thinkers, such as Angela Davis and Abbie Hoffman. ______________________________________________________________ Marcuse died in July of 1979.
