Jockey Injured, Horse Euthanized after Churchill Spill
MorganLvr
by MorganLvr  6-22-2008
Yet another horse has to be euthanized after taking what should have been a simple bad step. This should NOT be happening, and I think the powers-that-be in racing better find out why so many horses go down and never get up.

The Bishop and the Ass
dakotayii
by dakotayii  6-16-2008    5
The paper headline the next day read: NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN. The Bishop fainted. He informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for $10.00. The next day the headline read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10.00. This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey, lead it to the plains, and let it go. Next day, the headline in the paper read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE. The Bishop was buried the next day.

No Evidence Found Eight Belles Was Injured During Derby
merrie
by merrie  5-15-2008
The Jockey Club has formed a panel to examine the issues, and its members participated in a conference call Wednesday. Stuart Janney, a thoroughbred owner and breeder who will chair the committee, said breeding practices, track surfaces and medication are among the subjects to be discussed. "We're going to use this committee as a bully pulpit to be persuasive on certain matters, and go to other people in the industry and say, 'This is how we feel, how are you going to help us?'" Janney said.

The Kentucky Derby Tragedy
merrie
by merrie  5-5-2008    16
Third, we should ban the racing of 2- and 3-year-olds so popular on the U.S. track. In Europe, horses are typically raced later, when their "growth plates" (leg bones) are fully formed and they are less prone to injury. Greedy Americans don't want to spend the money to keep the horse "hanging around" (to wit, not earning money) until they are 4 or 5 years old, and so we race them before their legs are strong enough to handle injury. Many horses are forced to live 23-7 in their stalls, except for the hour or so per day when they are exercised. The human equivalent would be tying someone to his or her bed for 23 hours per day, only letting them out to run for an hour. Wouldn't you go crazy under those circumstances? I hope Eight Belles's death serves as something more than a one-day news story. I hope her sacrifice causes every fan of horse racing to stop patronizing the sport or betting on the mounts until major reforms take place.

Inside the palace of Augustus - pics
righthand
by righthand  3-10-2008    2
Lived in by Augustus before he became Rome's first emperor in 27BC, the house is situated above the grotto where Romans may have worshipped Romulus, the city's founder, and was also handy for watching horse racing in the Circus Maximus at the foot of the hill. "Augustus wanted to be near the grotto, but could also see the races from up here," said Italy's culture minister, Francesco Rutelli. The restoration, begun after the house was found in the 1970s, has reconstructed shattered frescoes in deep reds, yellows and blues featuring theatrical masks and mythical animals. "The extremely high quality of the frescoes befits the owner, although these were the fashions of the time and don't offer much insight into Augustus's individual taste," said Angelo Bottini, Rome's archaeological chief. Tourists - who will be allowed in five at a time - may be surprised to see how modest the study, bedroom, entrance hall and dining room were. Augustus, Julius Caesar's great nephew, avoided excess

And why is it that the legends of Poseidon are filled with these fantastic stories, but we don’t see any of these miracles today. In an age of cheap and available telecommunication and video recording, we never capture these miracles on tape. Well, there was that cheese sandwich thing that one time. We’re only left with some historical documents from thousands of years ago. Sure, some people say he still protects ships at sea, and some of the nuttier people say he caused the 2005 tsunami as punishment against the faithless. But what about the very obviously improbable events: there are no reports of him seducing mortal women today. He doesn’t make deals to build walls around modern cities as he did with Troy. He had children that included mermaids, winged horses, cyclopses, and giants; we don’t see creatures like this today. Why is it that all these supernatural events were recorded frequently back then, but not now?

Horse flu: NSW to give $7.5m
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2007    2
Ms Toft said she was alarmed at the DPI's lack of urgency over the outbreak on her property, where other mares and some older horses were sick."We haven't had much help from the DPI since the beginning," she said. "We reported our property to be infected now 14 days ago and we still, to this day, we haven't had a DPI inspector onto our property to look at the severity of the problem." She urged breeders to band together and voice their concerns to the Government. A DPI spokesman today said that biosecurity was everyone's responsibility, including horse owners and their vets. He said a DPI inspector would be unable to visit other properties for 24 hours after being on an infected site.
