POPSAntarctica is breaking up, in a troubling sign of global warming
'The latest images, taken by Envisat's radar, say fractures have now opened up in this bridge and adjacent areas of the plate are disintegrating, creating large icebergs. The Antarctic peninsula -- the tongue of land that juts northward from the white continent towards South America -- has had one of the highest rates of warming anywhere in the world in recent decades. But this latest stage of the breakup occurred during the Southern Hemisphere's winter, when atmospheric temperatures are at their lowest. One idea is that warmer water from the Southern Ocean is reaching the underside of the ice shelf and thinning it rapidly from underneath. "Wilkins Ice Shelf is the most recent in a long, and growing, list of ice shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula that are responding to the rapid warming that has occurred in this area over the last fifty years," researcher David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) said. "Current events are showing that we were being too conservati

POPSIncredible World Wildlife Fund Posters From Around the World WWF’s ultimate goal is to build a future where people live in harmony with nature. Here are a couple of the messages: “Preserve your world. Preserve yourself.” “Global Warming is changing the world’s climate rapidly. Icebergs are melting, oceans are rising, nature is revolting. Act now, conserve energy and treat the planet with respect, or we’ll have a world at sea.” “Animals around the world are losing their habitats due to climate change. By choosing a hybrid or fuel-efficient car, you can help prevent this. Take action now.” “Save the world with a few coins” “For Nature, small animals are as important as the big ones.” “A single can of dissolvent, or tin of paint, can pollute millions of liters of water.” “Building a single golf course puts thousands of trees at stake.” “Where is your home?” http://www.wwf.org/

POPSThanks Greenpeace - well done Espy, However, with all the money GP brings in from donations, I do wish they had refueled and returned to try and stop the whalers until April...but a good effort, nonetheless, better than nothin'! I hope their caampaign in Japan is a success and bring the Japanese people up to date on the thugs in the whaling fleet.

POPSAntarctic Iceberg Calving The images are records of antarctic expeditions where amongst other things photos were taken of iceberg 'calvings,' where a large iceberg breaks up into smaller pieces. the pictures were taken from 2000, until the end of the Antarctic research season in 2006, on page 3. The clipped pictures, are icon sized, but can be seen with greater magnification at the site. Due to the relationship between surface area and volume, the smaller icebergs become, the quicker they melt

POPSSwings and Checks in Nature How come scaremongering TV journalists do not publicise a significant increase in the ice cap as readily as they do with melting icebergs and glaciers? Maybe it does not scare people as much and will not sell so well. Cynical? Me? Nah!
