It is because of this ruling that Proposition 187 in California, which attempted to do via a referendum what Texas attempted to do via legislation, was invalidated. It is clear from the broad language in the Plyler case that providing an education is in the same class of social benefits as providing health care.

As to his claimed number of uninsured, e's temporarily removed the illegal aliens to lower the number from 47 million to 30 million. But he's still lying to say 30 million "cannot get coverage." Again, 18 million of these make more than $50,000 a year and can afford health care but choose not to purchase it. And millions more have access to government programs and don't access them, which, incidentally, doesn't bode well for Obama's mandated universal coverage plan. And if he has such bipartisan intentions, why did he spend a significant part of his speech demonizing his opponents and misrepresenting their motives?

POPSCongreesman Rogers on Health Care reform Someone who seems to know what's IN the bill and how it will apply to the majority of us. I'm for reform but not at the expense of taking away personal choices, penalizing businesses, dictating (aka. suggesting/helping) to our elderly and bringing on massive restructuring. As someone has suggested, I don't think our health care programs are as *sick* as Washington would like us to believe. The elimination of fraud and some tort reform, plus returning illegals to wherever they came from (in a humane way) would go a long way to beginning to make some significant improvements.

POPSJoker Math: The Myth Of 47 Million Uninsured Is it really a good idea to tax working people to subsidize those who refuse to pay for a necessity they could easily buy? The answer, of course, is no. One other breakdown of the data is instructive. By far the group with highest share of uninsured is Hispanics. Some 34.1% of all Hispanics lack coverage. That latter piece of data is alarming. Drilling even deeper, one finds that fully 27% of all the uninsured in the U.S. " that’s 12.6 million people " aren’t even citizens. Not coincidentally, the government also estimates that about 12 million illegals now reside in the U.S., though some think tanks put the number as high as 20 million. Putting the two together, this suggests that " surprise " a major reason for the uninsured “problem” is our failure to enforce our border. Someone PLEASE explain this to me: Illegals who have a job - crack down on them and the companies who hire them, but don't STOP illegals from getting into the country or send BACK the ones that commit crimes or drain our social services. Yeah - long sentence. Still, it's a fair question. The administration keeps looking for new ways to spend our tax dollars and still can't fix anything. California is crushed under the burden of illegals leaching on the system. They know where the illegals are, but won't send them back. Instead, the government wants to take the productive illegals and punish them and their employers? We call that Bass Ackwards. And stupid.
