POPSU.S. Supports use of Cluster Munitions Cluster munitions are large weapons that release up to hundreds of smaller submunitions. "Air-dropped or ground-launched, they cause two major humanitarian problems and risks to civilians," writes the Cluster Munition Coalition. 1-their widespread dispersal means they cannot distinguish between military targets and civilians so the humanitarian impact can be extreme, 2-many submunitions fail to detonate on impact and become de facto antipersonnel mines killing and maiming people long after the conflict has ended Why does the U.S. want to continue the use of these inaccurate, indiscriminate, and unreliable bombs? We have 'smart' bombs and we use 'surgical strike' technology. Why do we insist on employing such barbaric weaponry? For a country that prides itself as a democratic and humanitarian state, how can the U.S. ignore the overwhelming mandate of such a large number of nations?

POPSRemember Salem? From the article: The religious leaders offer help to the families whose children are named as witches, but at a price. The churches run exorcism, or "deliverance", evenings where the pastors attempt to drive out the evil spirits. Only they have the power to cleanse the child of evil spirits, they say. The exorcism costs the families up to a year's income.

POPSWhatever it takes to win! Democrats are gearing up for whatever happens on Election Day. Should Obama win, champagne will flow, McCain will make a concession speech, and all will be well with the world. But should Obama lose, McCain will pop the cork, and Lawsuits will fly into courthouses across the land.

POPSThanks, Senator Obama! My Transition From Wonk To Star Wasn’t there, perhaps, something more in that sentence? Something that might, you know, accurately portray my views? A little more Googling to find the original story and, yep, there was more. Though the ad ended the non-quote with a period, it should have used an ellipsis. Oddly enough, the rest of the sentence which the ad “disappeared” criticized the Obama tax plan. Of course I’m flattered that the Obama campaign thinks so highly of me that they insist on giving me national exposure. I just wish they had called me first, to verify the information in the ad. I imagine they’re pretty embarrassed now that The Heritage Foundation’s lawyer has notified them that their advertisement is false. In fact, the campaign must be feeling really sheepish about their gaffe. They haven’t worked up the nerve to apologize to me, or even respond to our lawyer’s letter. Perhaps they’re still debating how to set the record straight.

POPSConservatives plan future with Palin She's not going away. The republican party has to be pretty desperate to hang on to her as their best hope for a future run at the presidency. Despite all of her short-comings as a viable candidate they tout her 'attractiveness' and 'ability to give a great speech' as selling points. These are very shallow foundations to hedge your bet on. Personally, I don't see it.

POPS The Message Of Obama's Socialist Realism Art And Senator Obama’s supporters insist that their dear leader has nothing to do with socialist/Marxist leanings, thoughts, beliefs? Next time they tell you that, just point out the Fairey “Hope” button they wear on their lapel, or the one they are sporting as a sticker on their car. The similarities between the Soviet, Cuban, Chinese Communist and Barack Obama propaganda posters are not coincidental. Barack Obama is a collectivist, a far-Left socialist who has attracted and has the support of radical groups, including the Communist Party Illinois, Socialist Party USA, The Center for Constitutional Rights and The Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. The Obama “Progress” poster was designed by leftwing (surprise!) artist Shepard Fairey. A similar poster by Fairey, with the word “change” on it is sold by Barack Obama’s online campaign store.

POPSOfficial Accidentally Demonstates E-Voting Problems on Film This video of an election official trying (and failing) to debunk claims of e-voting problems makes it clearer to me than ever before just why e-voting has been such a disaster: Wishful thinking on the part of non-technical morons who seem willing to discount practically any problem with machines that make their jobs easier.

POPSVA claims found in piles to be shredded Peake said three of VA’s 57 regional offices were involved, without naming them. Veterans of Foreign Wars said they were told four regional offices — in Detroit, St. Louis, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Waco, Texas — were identified as having documents in shredding bins that should not have been there. “The VA inspector general conducted a routine investigation of Detroit’s mailroom and discovered five documents in the shredder bin, then three pieces are found in St. Louis, two in Waco, and some more in St. Petersburg,” he said. “The question that begs to be asked and answered is how many veterans had their disability and compensation claims disappear down a paper shredder?” The halt in shredding was ordered by Patrick Dunne, the retired Navy rear admiral sworn in just weeks ago as VA’s new undersecretary for benefits. “Secretary Peake must hold everyone involved personally accountable for this disgraceful management failure,

POPSThe 'unitary executive' question
"Bush's aggressive exercise of unilateral powers has attracted serious opposition. Unfortunately, too many imagine that the unitary executive doctrine and its kingly prerogatives will leave office with him. That hope is false. History teaches that presidents do not give up power -- both Democrats and Republicans have worked to keep it. And besides, hoping the next president will give back some powers means conceding that it is up to him to make that decision." "If people have found Bush's exercise of executive power alarming, they should not only begin questioning presidential candidates about it, they should make it clear to their congressional representatives that they want these excess powers checked. Barack Obama has already promised that he will continue using signing statements, though he will not act as if they have the force of law. Interestingly enough, John McCain has suggested he will end the practice. These slim indicators deserve more pressure and scrutiny."

POPSSimple Low-Tech Home Wins Prize For Sustainability
Woodruff's house uses just 25% of the energy of a conventional house of the same size. His winter power costs are a $30 electricity bill each month and a cord of wood. In the summer, power is needed only for the hot water heater and appliances. Yet the little 1,100-sq.-ft. house is as straightforward as you can get. No high-tech gizmos. No elaborate contortions. The house relies on simple architectural principles -- windows oriented for sunlight, cross breezes for ventilation, overhangs for shade -- basics that were much lauded in the 1940s and '50s, but less emphasized since. They included large doors that can be opened for cross-breezes. They designed the heating so energy is used and reused within rooms. The living/ dining/kitchen area is one big room heated by a wood stove on rainy days, and the sun on sunny days. "The public rooms face east, the logic being you want those to heat up with the sun first in the winter and in the summer, you want to avoid the hot western sun.

POPSHow International Bankers Gained Control of America "My paramount objective is to save the Union, and it is not either to save or destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it." So what was the Civil War all about? There were many factors at play. Northern industrialists had used protective tariffs to prevent their southern states from buying cheaper European goods. Europe retaliated by stopping cotton imports from the South. The Southern states were in a financial bind. They were forced to pay more for most of the necessities of life while their income from cotton exports plummeted. The South grew ncreasingly angry. But there were other factors at work. ... The central bankers now saw an pportunity to use the North/South divisions to split the rich new nation - t divide and conquer by war. Was this just some sort of wild conspiracy theory? Well, let's look at what a well placed observer of the scene had to say at time.(cont. at source)

POPSRFK Jr. on Palin's Big Oil infatuation
Now John McCain has chosen as his running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a diligent student of Big Oil's crib sheets. She's something of a flat-earther who shares the current administration's contempt for science. Palin has expressed skepticism about evolution (which is like not believing in gravity), putting it on par with "creationism," which posits that the Earth was created 6,000 years ago. She used to insist that human activities have nothing to do with climate change. "I'm not one ... who would attribute it to being man-made," she said in August. After she joined the GOP ticket, she magically reversed herself, to a point. "Man's activities certainly can be contributing to the issue of global warming," she told Charles Gibson two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Alaska is melting before our eyes; entire villages erode as sea ice vanishes, glaciers are disappearing at a frightening clip, and "dancing forests" caused by disappearing permafrost astonish residents and tourists. Palin had to
