POPSOusting Jack Murtha If all that didn't make this enough of an inspiring story: In February, a Pennsylvania judge ruled that Russell had failed to collect enough signatures to make the primary ballot. But he refused to give up on his goal of defeating Murtha. The GOP neophyte persevered on a shoestring budget and won more than 4,000 write-in votes in the spring to earn a spot on the general-election ballot. Russell's campaign manager, veteran GOP activist Peg Luksik, says most second-quarter donations were less than $50. Russell's clear on where he stands. "I am a conservative," he says in his defining campaign statement. "I believe in the sovereignty and security of this one nation, under God. I believe the primary role of government is to provide for the common defense and a legal framework to protect families and individual liberty."

POPSBoody Shirt an Icon of our Times It has been suggested that Batebi should meet with President Bush. Perhaps, that would give enough PR to the Admin to keep justiying an immoral war..."see, they are being persecuted over there, and they come to us for Freedom". It has also been posted in several reports that Batebi was sentenced to death for his "civil unrest". This report says 10 years. Either way, I personally am glad he got out and is free. All men have the right to be free and not to suffer. We just save save them all right now. It would be so great if everyone would just refuse to fight. All sides. Refuse to fight. But then that would leave the terrorists who will not refuse to fight...for their religion. Seems like the way to real peace, freedom and abolition of suffering is not to stop wars, but to stop religion.

POPSOn Jesse Jackson's Apology One of the odd criticisms of Jesse Jackson is his insistence that others apologize if they make offensive or racist comments about another individual. Here is an example of Jesse Jackson practicing what he preaches. Apologies are important. (I made one yesterday.) They restore what was made out of balance among persons back to a state of balance as closely as possible depending on the circumstances. They are a way of taking responsibility for one's actions and are an admission, of what we often don't want to acknowledge, our finitude. As such they are a way of inspiring trust in those realistic enough to realize that imperfection is a universal trait. I applaud Jackson's apology. It makes me trust him more.

POPSOuter-space sex For all these reasons, Logan said spontaneous sex in space could be "a little underwhelming." "It's a pretty messy environment, when you think about it," he said. "And for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. However ... I can well imagine how compelling, inspiring, and quite frankly stimulating choreographed sex in zero-G might be in the hands of a skilled and talented cinematographer with appropriate lighting and music." When the crowd tittered, Logan added, "I'm not kidding: Sex in zero-G is going to have to be more or less choreographed. Otherwise it's just going to be a wild flail."

POPS Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings The Lindau meeting will have---so its organizers hope---a single leitmotif, namely the issue of the fundamental qualifications for training to be a researcher and the essential prerequisites for becoming a successful scientist.
